In Australia they are in every shop and supermarket. You can make your own instead though 🙂
I can’t find the onion soup mix, only cans of soup? Where do people get theirs?
August 11, 2021
Yep time will still be similar 🙂

If I’m only cooking 2 do I still do the same cooking time, obviously I’ll half the other ingredients 🙂

I cooked this last night
Seared four lamb shanks, double all sauce ingredients. Four and half hours on high.

Family enjoyed this great recipe. Easy to make. I tweaked slightly, in that I cooked on low for 8 hours and thickened with a cornflour slurry 20 minutes before serving with kumara mash and green vegetables

I’m a straight in kinda gal myself Leanne 🙂

Am going to try tonight!! Did anyone braise the shanks prior or just straight into the pot?

I decided to try this one tonight, only change I made was the Onion as my son isn’t a fan of it (33 yrs old, yeh I know hahaha) so I substituted the onion with cherry tomatoes and wasn’t disappointed, very nice if I say so myself… 5 stars for sure

Shanks at their best. Super recipe, love it every time! Family favourite.

I’ve never been a big fan of lamb shanks, UNTIL NOW! This recipe is amazing and so full of flavour. If I could give it more stars I would.

Just finished eating this tonight and everyone cleaned their plate! So easy to make. I followed the recipe to the letter except I took the meat off the bones at the end, added some cornflour to the liquid and then returned the meat to the slow cooker while I served up the mash and green beans. Perfect Sunday dinner on a cold winter’s night
Family favourite. Sooo, good. Best ever.

No you don’t need to pre brown them Kerrie 🙂
May 18, 2020
Do the shanks need to be browned first. Thanks

I love this recipe, at the end I make a slurry of plain flour and water and add it to the juices to thicken and make a gravy. Amazing

Fantastic recipe with store cupboard ingredients. I made a slight change in not reducing the sauce towards the end, instead, I removed the shanks (I used homegrown hogget) and added cornflour to make a thicker sauce. Blitzed the cornflour into the remaining liquid. A wonderful autumn touch to the meal.

Can anyone please tell me do I need to mix the onion soup mix with water or anything? Or just add in it dry?
June 17, 2019
I cooked this dish today but substituted the lamb shanks with 6 chicken drumsticks. I also usd the low salt variety of the onion soup mix. I cooked it on low for 8 hours & thickened the sauce with cornflour. I served it with sweet potato mash & steamed broccoli. A very enjoyable meal.
June 14, 2019
Yes I’d give it an extra 2hrs 🙂
June 13, 2019
If I double the recipe do I cook it for longer?
January 10, 2019
We have these about once a fortnight. Absolutely delicious! Such an easy and tasty recipe. I always keep the leftover gravy and have it with sausages the next night. Can’t wait to try it with beef.

You do Kathy Roberts – doesn’t seem like you are looking I very hard??
You have about 2500 other recipes to choose from that have NONE
Go do that instead of being rude on other members recipes 🙂
Help thyself – it’s not hard after all 🙂

PLEASE why can’t we have recipes with ingredients without using packaged ingredients ( French Onion Soup)
June 18, 2018
These were so good will be definitely making them again
April 12, 2018
I added a teaspoon of chilli flakes and a teaspoon crushed garlic, thickened liquid with a little cornflour..absolutely fantastic

Divine. It was so flavoursome and the meat simply fell off the bones. We are putting this in our favourites to have again.

Fantastic recipe, I have made this several times and it never disappoints.

I made this recipe the other day, deeeelish! I used a tsp of powdered beef stock instead of liquid stock , a can of chopped tomatoes, a clove of garlic and two tiny red chillies, it was a hit. And the gravy on mashed potatoes is super yum, thanks for an easy shanks recipe
September 1, 2017
I love this recipe and so did the whole family! So easy to throw together too. I use beef instead of lamb shanks and serve on mashed potato. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
July 16, 2017
This was a real winner!! Followed the recipe except for the carrots and thickened the sauce with 3 tablespoons of instant chicken gravy with 30min to go. Delicious!!
July 15, 2017
Could i use french onion tin soup in this as i cant find pkt one
July 13, 2017
We had this for dinner last week and it was very yummy with lots of flavour… So this week my dad asked if you could use Turkey legs. We had it for dinner tonight with Turkey legs and the only ingredient i changed was the Beef stock to Chicken stock and was yummy… I’m not a fan of turkey as i find it too dry but this just fell apart…. Only problem with turkey is that it is also very filling….

This recipe is excellent. The sauce has a lovely flavour and it’s a very affordable family meal.
Thank you Gail

I used gravy flour to thicken the cooking liquid into a gravy and added an extra slug of wostershire sauce and tomato sauce.
Easy recipe as I always have these ingredients in the pantry.

I would do so Lesley, lamb shanks are very tolerable to long times cooking, but be sure to cook on LOW not high 🙂
Hi,I am just wondering whether I could cook these for 8 and a bit hours as I will be at work all day?
August 2, 2016
Omg they were amazing will be cooking again
July 18, 2016
That’s all 🙂
The shanks will release heaps
Hi just wondering if the 1 cup of beef stock is the only liquid in this recipe? Just doesn’t seem enough liquid to cook properly? Not wanting to stuff it up! 🙂
June 3, 2016
The oily nature of lamb could make them a little oily but give it a go I say 🙂
June 1, 2016
Curious, could throwing in other veggies as well as the carrots work too? I’ve got a fussy toddler to feed and veggies always end up on the floor haha.

Whole family loves this one!
