Equipment

  • 5-7L slow cooker

Ingredients

  • 1 kg beef mince
  • 410 gram can condensed tomato soup
  • 400 gram can diced tomatoes
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp ground chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1 kg bag of frozen potato hash browns (see note in step 3)
  • 2 cups grated cheese

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients (except the hash browns and cheese) in the slow cooker and mix to combine
  • Cook on low for 4hrs
  • Cover with frozen hash browns in a single layer
Note:  I used a large rectangle slowcooker.  If you are using a round or oval one you may find potato gems/tater tots easier to assemble in that shape.  Any frozen potato hash brown type product will work.  Just keep it to a single layer
  • Cook on low for an additional 2hrs
  • Top with grated cheese and give an additional 20mins to melt well
  • Serve with side salad

Made this for the first time and it did not disappoint. Has lots of flavour and my husband went back for seconds.
I will be adding some jalapeños and using taco seasoning pkts next time but was still an absolutely delicious meal.

Made the Texas Tater Bake and it’s always an absolute favourite with me & the hubby. I do add diced jalapeños and I also added some diced mushrooms this time plus I also add taco seasoning to it as well. Also add diced capsicum

I add potato gems on top as I put it in a round slow cooker.

It does freeze well but without the potato gems and cheese. When reheating I add cheese then air fry/oven the potato gems and add on top
