  1. Didnt add full amount of rice as stated in recipe, i added garlic granules to the sauce mix and its a big hit in this house great on pasta or served with garlic bread and a salad

  2. I add curry powder to the meat balls as well, comes out with such a good flavour 🙂

  3. Made these for the first time in the slow cooker. Have had them before done in the oven. I much prefer the SC! So delicious, I would only add a little curry powder to the mince next time to boost flavour of the mince. Will make again 🙂

Made these, last night. Did double batch as feeding men. Taste was just like the ones mum made many years ago. They even stayed as balls! Will use more soup next time, as boys like the sauce. Will be making again. Yum!!

Mince is just what you would call ground beef. So yes you could make with turkey instead. Or chicken too

  5. Can never get the rice to soften- what’s the secret! Your rice if choice in this recipe?
    Thanks!

  6. I wonder instead of using tomato soup could you use pasta sauce?

You could, it would just have a different consistency and more acidic like tomatoes than creamy like soup 🙂 You could also do the tomatoes then maybe stir through some cream at the end?

Made these today , they were ready in 6 hours. The rice cooked through, they stayed in shape, I should have turned them over after a few hours as the bottom of some of them were a bit burnt. They tasted good but the sauce was a bit too rich for me.

If I used store bought meatballs would the cooking time be the same?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central June 26, 2020

To cook through regular meatballs they’d only need more like 4hrs, but these have rice in them, hence the high volume of liquids in the sauce. You wouldn’t need so much if you used store bought with no rice in them 🙂

These were absolutely delicious! I added garlic powder, vegeta, onion salt, , double the garlic to the meat mix and also seasoned the soup and crushed tomatoes with herbs and garlic salt because I love ALL the garlic! Will definitely make these again!

  10. These were great! So easy and recipe fed 5 of us with left overs for another night!
Only thing I’d change is the sauce was a bit rich (I used condensed soup so that may be why…..) so next time I’ll play around with that. Maybe 1 tin of soup, 2 tins tomatoes.

I have made these porcupine balls twice in the slow cooker and they turned out great. The 2nd time I peeled and cut into small pieces potatoes and carrots. I put them in the slow cooker, placed the balls on top and covered them with the big tin of Heinz tomato soup. Tasted great and made enough for 4 meals.

For the first time since my kids were teenagers, we had Porcupine Balls. They did not disappoint, lovely and tasty.

Cooked porcupine balls for first time today. Cooked on low for 8 hours and had it with potatoes, beans and a corn cobette. Mouth-wateringly delicious with leftovers for another three meals.

Make this regularly and love them but could I cook them on high for 5hrs Pauline?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central October 29, 2025

I don’t think they’d need that long Tracey – just test a litle one to make sure the rice is tender that’s the main thing to watch for as the mince will certainly be cooked in that time 🙂
