Sweet Lamb Curry

Serving: 6
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 5 hours
Total Time 5 hours 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1kg diced lamb (I had a butcher debone and dice a leg piece of lamb)
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 3 tsp mild curry powder
  • 1/2 tsp minced ginger
  • 2 small green granny smith cooking apples, peeled, cored and diced
  • 1/2 cup beef stock liquid
  • 1/2 cup fruit chutney
  • Cornflour (to thicken)

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients (except cornflour) into slow cooker
  • Cook on HIGH for 2hrs then LOW for 3hrs (which is the same as 5hrs on auto)
  • This dish would be ok cooked longer on just low also if you are not there to change it or wish it to cook all day
  • 1/2 hr prior to serving, mix 2-3 tbsp cornflour with 1 tbsp water to form a paste and stir through dish. Leave lid slightly ajar for that last half hour to thicken.
  • Serve with creamy mashed potato or rice and crusty bread rolls.

Thanks for leaving feedback – so pleased you enjoy it 🙂

A great family dinner. It is not too spicy for the kids to eat it. It has become one of our favourite dinners. I use lamb shoulder. I get the butcher to debone it and I dice the meat before adding to the slowcooker. The meat is meltingly tender. Highly recommend.

  3. Rachel

Made this for dinner last night, delicious ! Thumbs up from all the family.
I didn’t have fruit chutney so used Green Tomato Relish. Turned out great. Thank you Paulene

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

      Nice!
I LOVE my green tomato relish so might try a combo of that next time too 🙂

  7. Stella

Amazing receipe!! So easy and full of flavour. Added extra curry for our tastebuds. Simply amazing will be making it again and many many more times after that.

  8. Christine Galea

Do u think this would wok well with beef?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

I think it would yes 🙂

  9. Danae

Has anyone tried it using chicken??

  10. Claire

This is absolutely delish! Every plate was virtually licked clean! Thank you for the recipe – it was perfect for a Saturday nights tea – will definitely be making again very soon!

Hands down the nicest curry I have ever made!

  12. Louise

Absolutely Devine! I would definitely make it again.

  14. sara busbridge

I,m cooking this today for tonight’s tea

  15. Judith Clark

Luv this stuff in a homemade pie

  16. Kristy McCabe

We tried this tonight and it was delish ! The sweetness from the apples and fruit chutney was a nice change from my usual curry dishes. I served it with mashed potatoes, steamed veg and some hot dinner rolls . I had five clean plates and a serve left over for a nice warm lunch tomorrow. Thank you for sharing

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

You are most welcome – so pleased you loved it!

  17. Jen

This is one of my favourite things I’ve cooked so far! I haven’t ever had a sweet curry. It was delicious! I served with white rice and Pappadams . Will definitely make again.

  18. Di Booth

My hubby doesn’t like curry but I love it. Is it a real curry taste? Do you think a non-curry eater would like it? Thanks.

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

It’s not a strong/hot curry at all no
But why not reduce the curry in half again first time you cook it until you see what he thinks?
You can always increase it the next time then if he’s ok with it 🙂

  19. Ann Maree

Has become a regular family favourite! Especially great for winter-time!

I usually get a vegetable soup pack to chop up and pop in it to veg it up.

  20. Elizabeth Tucker

Such an easy and very tasty meal. I added carrots also.

  21. Kelly

Beautiful sweet curry, whole family loved it

  22. Carla

We had this tonight and OMG it is amazzzing!

  23. Karen

Do you know what would happen if you added the cornflour in with all the other ingredients rather than adding it towards the end?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

It sometimes doesn’t need thickening at the end so I wait and see 🙂

  24. Meg

Beautiful! So easy to make and really tasty. I made this with stewing pieces so I needed to cook it for a few more hours. Now a favourite.

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

      Thanks Meg! 🙂

  25. Skye Murphy

Absolutely delish!!! Served with bread rolls and steamed broccoli

    Definitely making again, amazing flavours

  26. margaret byfieldt

Could you state if the meals can b frozen please

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

      This meal can be.

  27. Paul tomkins

What fruit chutney do you use? is diced lamb OK?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

I use the Rosella brand of fruit chutney myself
And yes diced is fine 🙂

  28. Anja

If I wanted to leave it on all day what length of time, on low, would you suggest? Thanks!

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

It’s quite forgiving of extra time
Especially if your slow cooker is quite full
You could even do a double batch and it could easily go 8hrs + on low

  29. Ella

This was really good. Do you think it could be assembled raw and frozen for a freezer dump bag meal, to defrost overnight and throw in the slow cooker Ina weekday morning?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

Sure you could. You may just wish to add the apples on the day of cooking 🙂

  30. Carla Mullenberg

    Another winner loved it.

  31. mez9s

    Another family favourite! 🙂

  32. Sarah

Hi just wondering what curry powder fo you use.. i generally use KEENS?

And is this suitable for younger kids? Is it spicy?
    Ta ?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

I use Keen’s too 🙂 My kids all like it (3-14) but if you are worried you could cut back the curry a smidge so it’s not so noticeable 🙂

  33. Vicky Grindal

OMG! This was fantastic!!! So yummy. Had some leftover so can’t wait for lunch tomorrow to have some more!!!

  34. Marcia

I’m making this with diced kangaroo for tonight! Will let you know how it goes…

  35. Marcia

Worked great with kangaroo instead of lamb. Will definitely make again!

  36. Tenelle

A hit with the whole family and really simple to make. Will be making it again.

  37. Megan Tarlinton

Does the apple make a difference? I need to make dump bags (for hubby), and dont think i can rely on him to put the apple in on the day.

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

      It adds the sweet
Pop it in the dumpbag 🙂

  38. Kim Lutz

If I double the recipe, do I double the liquids. Love this recipe.

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

      Yes I’d double everything 🙂

  39. Eric

I cut up a bone in lamb leg in small 1/2 inch cubes and times and a halved the ingredients as I had about 3 lbs lamb.after removing the bone. Very tasty and will be making this again. Not sure where all you are from using kilos and kangaroo but we are from the Seattle area in The US. Got your idea from the Yummly app. Thanks for the great dinner.

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

      I’m from Australia 🙂

  40. Pammie’s Kitchen

Very low on meat at present so decided to use the 3 sausages I had left plus a tin of cannolli beans in place of the lamb.
    Added mushrooms and zucchini also.
As previous times I have cooked this recipe it once again has not failed me with the lovely flavour.
Now I know I will be able to make it a non meat just substituting with beans.
    Thank you Paulene.

  41. Kathy

Can I add veges to this dish?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

      I’m sure you could 🙂

  42. Nerida

A family favourite- even my sister who “doesn’t like lamb” had seconds

  43. Karen Young

My husband’s favourite, he’d have it every night if I let him. Always meets with a resounding “Yum!”

  44. Debbie Hancock

I have to admit i was cautious about this one as I’m not big on spicy food but the flavours are amazing i served with rice and it was lovely.

  45. Claire R

We had this for dinner tonight. I used a 600gish lamb shoulder and had it on low for approx. 8 hours. It was perfection with mashed potato. I can’t wait to have the leftovers in a pie ?.

  46. Krisha Guinea

Stop wondering and make it!!!! ? 5 stars again!! Its easy, tasty, delicious, and yummy! Great family friendly, 8 yr and 1 yr gobbled it down. Used forequarter lamb chops and also didn’t have the Apple on hand substited 1 can of lychee ?.
Used tripe amount of corn flour. Cooked on low nearly 7 hrs.

  47. Betsy

Oh goodness, this was so good!!! I served it with rice and both of my kids devoured two helpings. They said I would definitely need to make this again. My husband, who generally does not like curry, polished his off, too. I loved the sweetness of this and the flavor blend is wonderful.

  48. Cathy

Hi was just wondering if anyone has done this recipe with beef
    TIA

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

      Yes it can 🙂

  49. christine law

I wanna try this so badly. But i couldnt find any store bought fruit chutney, what should i do?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

A fruity or tomato relish would be similar. What country do you live in?

  50. Marilyn Jacobs

Question – Has anyone tried this in Instant pot pressure cooker? What timing did you use? Was going to do this in slow cooker but then realized I had read time wrong.
    Thanks
    Marilyn

  51. Carolin Giles

Such a tasty dish…Only change I made was I had no lamb, so used rump steak cut up…Whole family loved it…WINNER…!!!

  52. Bobbie

The recipe calls for cornflour . Is that corn meal or corn starch? Big difference!

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

Cornflour … as stated in recipe.
Same as what you would call corn starch.

  53. Suzi

So yummy!! How does it freeze?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

      Freezes ok 🙂

  54. Debi Harris

    Hi Paulene
Can I use diced lamb back strap instead?
I have loads of this a need to use it.
Would the diced lamb back strap require different cooking time for this recipe at all ?? ??

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

I think that would still be fine 🙂 If it’s extra fatty just remove extra fat where you can or remove it prior to serving 🙂
Similar time so wouldn’t change that

  55. Sarah

This was sooo good, partner, 2yr old and 9month old loved it also.
I did add peas corn potato and carrot to mild the sweetness and get some veg into the kiddies ?

  56. Kelly Wessel

I made this for dinner last night a it was fabulous. Beautiful flavour profile and a winner with hubby and kids. Will be adding to my repertoire. I added potato and carrots to boost the veggie content, used lamb forequarter chops (I couldn’t get diced) and served with sweet potato mash. Yum yum yum

  57. Joanne

So delicious tasty ? easy to do

  58. Brodie

Hi I’m just making this for dinner tonight and really looking forward to it. Just comfirming that 1/2 cup of beef stock is the only/ enough liquid?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

      That’s correct 🙂

  59. Jo Woodhouse

I made this with leftover lamb from a roast day before, it was really easy to make and delicious, will definitely make again ??

  60. Ann

Without a doubt the best lamb curry I’ve made!

  61. Michelle

My very fussy family loved this. We used a whole leg of lamb and pulled it apart when it was cooked. The leftovers reheated the next day were even tastier. Thank you from NSW Australia x

  62. Margy

Yumbo! I used a couple of discounted chops (fat removed) and some fruit chutney I found in the back of the fridge. There’s only two of us so I divided the ingredients into thirds and used my 1.5l slow cooker.

  63. Brooke Harbour

I made this tonight for dinner. WOW so tasty. This will definitely be on the menu regularly! YUM!! Thank you xx

  64. Chris Cherry ? everyone calls me Nanna which I love ??..l

An amazing recipe, beautiful, not to sweet, lamb melts in your mouth, thanks again Paulene for all you do for us. Will definitely be on my rotation. Xxoo

  65. Matt

Omg this is soo delicious ? would eat it all the time

  66. Matt

Loved it would eat it again

  67. Lynice Cousins

This is definitely a favourite in our house! I used about 1.5kg lamb chops and added extra fruit chutney. Everything else was left the same. We served it over Parmesan potato mash. Hubby and both kids ask for this recipe all the time! ?

  68. Jo Turner

    Best curry ever

  69. Michelle Jackson

This was yummy and a no fuss easy recipe to make. Best of all my husband enjoyed it.

  70. Amy

Very tasty, my whole family love it, have made it twice now!

  71. Nikki

I made this last week, added a full jar of the chutney, and extra apple, another tsp on curry power and some more sultanas, but this is our taste and it was just lovely, will def make again.

  72. Shelley

Made this but didn’t have fruit chutney, I added jalapeño relish. It was the best. Will make it again for sure

  73. Lorraine Baker

    Delicious!!!!
Made it a little too spicy (didn’t carefully measure the teaspoons of curry powder ?????) for my liking, but was still totally delectable. I halved the meat amount, as there’s just me, so it made dinner today, and 2 more serves. Perfect. Looking forward to when I can eat it again. And will definitely make for family next time we get together.

  74. Lauren Doran

We had this about 5-6 weeks ago. I was so sceptical, thinking it would be way too sweet, but everyone LOVED it!!! I’m now making it again next week

  75. Melissa Williams

Nom nom nom. Don’t question it , just do it, it’s my go to lamb dish . Even someone who dose not like lamb or curry enjoyed it

  76. Rebecca Sutton

This is the ultimate comfort food! My nan used to make similar to this and the recipe was lost over the years. Childhood memories, and a family of lamb haters that demolished it with vigor lol

  77. Jane Ash

I am not a person who eats curries or anything with heat but my god this is amazing so full of flavour for such an easy dish this will be a regular in our house now. I bought a 1kg of rolled boneless lamb and diced it up.

  78. Alyson Medew

Made this last night. Beautiful. Will make again.

  79. Jane Ash

Trying this using sausages to see what it’s like.

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

It definitely works that way too 🙂 Sweet Sausage Curry

  80. Jane ash

My hubby loves making this dish he wanted me to ask if anyone has trylied coconut cream in it?

  81. Shivaun Nelson

One of my favourite recipes. I’ve made it with lamb (usually lamb shanks), chicken and beef, you just need to adjust the cooking time for the type of meat. I usually add lots of veggies as well, such as celery, carrots , pumpkin and also add chickpeas or lentils. I usually double the sauce ingredients and sometimes add a tin of coconut milk. Great to freeze, if there is any not eaten! Yumm!

  82. Christine

Best lamb curry ever make it all the time but I only use 1t curry powder we don’t like it too hot

  83. Naomi Fraser

Not a huge fan of this curry. It tasted ordinary to me. Perhaps I left it on for too long but I would’ve liked more sauce and flavour.

  84. Bev

This was a hit. A diced up a boneless leg of lamb. Definitely making it again.

  85. Cheryl

Could I use tin apples in this recipe

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

      Sure, I don’t see why not 🙂

  86. Kathryn

Could you add more vegies- day potato and carrot? Don’t like spicy foods in our house, maybe reduce the curry powder to 1t?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

If you add hard veg like that Kathryn, be sure to keep it cut small and add from the start. I don’t find this a spicy curry as our kids enjoy it too but you can definitely reduce it down further to 1-2tsp no worries 🙂

  87. Anna

Do people brown the meat first ?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

      Optional Anna 🙂
I don’t do so for this recipe

  88. Kathryn

How long should it go on low if you’re out most of the day and aren’t able to do the high, then low thing?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

7-8hrs low is lovely for this recipe

  89. Elizabeth

Love this curry I added chopped banana to mine great flavour

  90. Elizabeth

Love this curry. I added a chopped banana delicious

  91. Jessica

We made this the other night however we used beef as I couldn’t get lamb I also added carrot and potatoes( cut them small enough that they didn’t disappear but cooked ) it was so delicious. We also left it on all day for about 5 to 6 hours

  92. Carly

    New slow cooker fav!
My kids (3, 18months and 7months) and my parents who were over for dinner polished it off! Was absolutely delish!
I added carrots at the beginning and green bean towards the end as well as doubling the chutney and beef stock! Amazing!

  93. Carly

    New favourite slow cooker dish!
My kids (7months, 18months and 3) and my parents who were over for dinner absolutely loved it! I added carrots at the beginning and green beans in the last hour of cooking and used double the chutney and beef stock! Served with rice and dinner roll! Was honestly amazing!

  94. Lauren Doran

We have this on rotation a lot during winter. Tonight I made it with diced Venison instead of lamb and added carrots and peas. Oh my it was just as lovely as when made with lamb.

  95. Sharyn

I loved this recipe. I only added 1 teaspoon of the curry powder cause my one little one. I also just used a full jar of the fruit chutney cause it was pointless leaving 2 spoonfuls in the jar.
    Definitely will make this again

  96. Christine Dampier

I am allergic to cooked fruit of any kind, aswell as tomatoes, mushrooms and shellfish. I love a good curry but cannot find a recipe that doesn’t have things in it I can’t eat. Can I substitute Corn Relish and/or Sweet Mustard Pickles instead of the Fruit Chutney and Apple?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

I think sweet mustard pickles would be a great substitute for the chutney Christine 🙂

  97. Kirsty McKay

Lots of flavour, one of the best sweet curries I have ever eaten.
My partner who hates apples in savoury food didn’t even notice the apples and said the meal was delicious.

  98. Lou

The flavours are definitely there. I’m going to try this with beef as there was too much fat from the lamb. For sure this is a great dish and I will put it on rotation.

  99. Christine

Love this recipe make it all the time
I only use 1t curry powder as the kids don’t like it to hot….
It’s really nice over mash potato

  100. Christine

This is the best lamb curry I’ve tasted
I only use 1t curry powder as the kids don’t like it to hot….
It’s really nice over mash potato …. We love it

Have been contemplating making this dish?
Stop thinking and just do it!!!
If you like a slightly sweet and mild curry, this dish is a must. It is totally amazing ?
I used 1.2kg of Mutton Forequarter Chops instead of the diced lamb. It was so tasty served on top of steamed white rice.
Next time I make it (which will be very soon) I will add some carrot circles.
    Paulene……for this dish…..I give you a 1??0??

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

What awesome feedback!! Thanks Michelle 🙂

  103. Loren

Made this using beef instead of lamb, a couple of days ago. Turned out totally amazing!
Husband said we should have it again. Step-son inhaled his and took the leftovers to work for lunch the next day

  105. Teghan

    5 stars
Very yummy! My toddler and husband approved. I also blended some up for my baby who is on puree still and even he liked it.
    Would make again for sure.

  106. Kristi Fuller

Made this today and it is DELICIOUS! And it’s all for me (well maybe some to my toddler). have portioned up for some lunches during the week. Will def be making again.
I halved today’s batch as first time making but will definitely make a bigger batch next time!

  107. Rebecca Bartolo

  108. jan

Loved this Lamb Curry. I didnt add the cornflour as I love the juices.I will try it next time with lamb 4 Q chops.

  109. Helen

    5 stars
Not really a fruity type of curry person but this was a hit!! I did forget to peel apples (will do next time) but hubby & kids said it was great. I did add a 1tsp of ground chilli powder as we like a kick. Definitely one for the regular rotation

  110. Richard Thompson

    4 stars
Tasty recipe that my young grand daughter also enjoys. Some tweaks include: add half cup frozen peas in last half hour; add half cup uncooked rice and one cup water in last 3 hours.

  111. Deidre Heta

    5 stars
I made this for dinner last night accompanied with home made crusty bread rolls. Was so delicious, my kids even liked it. The sweet sauce/gravy was to die for. Will definitely be making this again. Thank you 😊

  112. Lou

    5 stars
Second time trying this and this time I used lamb steaks with no fat and it was amazing ! This is now my favourite lamb curry.

  113. Ani Stuli

I finally got round to trying this recipe. (Been on my list for a while). This was a pleasant surprise. I love authentic Indian curries., this one is western style. Not spicy. Comforting. 4yr old loved it (always a bonus). I swapped lamb for beef. Tasted even better the next day.

  114. Lindy Stacey

    5 stars
OMG, I’ve been looking at this recipe for a long time, but as my partner is not a lamb lover, put it off. I bit the bullet, bought a lamb shoulder roast, and some carrot, celery, potato, and then followed the recipe. It turned out absolutely superb, the meat just fell off the bone, and the taste was just amazing. My biggest regret is that I put off making it for so long.

  115. Lindy Stacey

Damn…. I don’t know why I waited so long to try this.

I used a shoulder of lamb, seared it first to remove some of the fat, and then followed the recipe. Added a zucchini, and carrot, and then an hour before completion, some frozen veggies.
It came out absolutely superb. Will be on a very regular rotation in this house

  116. Helen Vardanega

    5 stars
Oh this was delicious and easy to add more vegetables! My husband loved it and went back for seconds! I added two diced zucchini but you could add so many other vegetables. This one will definitely be on regular rotation in our house 👍

  117. Rhonda

Oh my good is this. I used forequarter shops and add a bit more curry. Grandson whinges about bones in chops (not sure what that’s about 🤔) but he scraped his plate clean. So good everyone loved it so much

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

That’s awesome! Well done Rhonda! 🙂

  118. Vicki Varney

Love this recipe. So simple but the flavours are amazing.
Have tried with different fruits including banana, apple, fig and last night, pear. 10/10.
I also add sultanas and peas and corn for the last hour, with the lid off or ajar to thicken. Then it doesn’t require cornflour. Favourite on our house!

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

That’s some AWESOME variation suggestions Vicki – thanks so much for sharing 🙂

  119. Diane Kalb

    5 stars
Made this with Beef and added some Sultanas. Was so delish and the meat melted in your mouth. Now a menu keeper. 🙂

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

Thanks for such wonderful feedback Diane! 🙂 🙂

  120. Christine Findlay

Yummo, I converted measurements to my 1.5litre slow cooker. Also browned the lamb in pan before hand (personal preference). It is definitely another one on my favourites list.

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

Hi Britt – can you share with folks how you converted these measurements and what time difference if any?
It will helps others wanting to do the same 🙂

  122. Kath Catterall

    5 stars
wow! we absolutely 💯 loved this,it was so tasty,I am not a curry lover, this will be a regular meal from now on. Thankyou Pauline!

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central

What a great review! Thanks Kath 🙂

  123. Jan Rhoades

I’m going to make this tomorrow but will swap out with fancy sausages which need to be cooked. I will probably also add some sultanas (my Dad used to do that)
I know you have curried sausage recipes but this sauce really appealed.
    Yum! Thank you 🙏

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central
