Granddad's Beef Stew and Dumplings.

A hearty tasty stew. Stew freezes well without the dumplings.

Ingredients
 

  • STEW
  • 1.5 kg diced beef
  • 2 large parsnips sliced
  • 2 large swedes diced
  • 2 large turnips diced
  • 4 large carrots sliced
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 2 cups beef stock
  • DUMPLINGS
  • 2 cups of self raising flour
  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • 100 mls water

Instructions
 

STEW

  • Place all the stew ingredients in a large slow cooker.
  • Cook on low for 8 hours.
  • Thicken gravy with a little cornflour if need before adding the dumplings.

DUMPLINGS

  • Sort flour into a bowl.
  • Rub in the butter.
  • Add water to form a soft dough.
  • Roll into golf ball sizes balls.
  • Add to the stew for the last hour.
  • Do not put a tea towel under the lid.

  1. Are there any other vegetables you could use other than the parsnips, swedes and turnips? More kid friendly?

  2. The dumplings just never really finished, even after an extra half an hour.
