Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 8 hours
Total Time 8 hours 5 minutes

Equipment

  • 6L slow cooker

Ingredients

  • *1-2 kg of chicken wings or drumsticks
  • 500g pkt diced frozen veg – I use this Mccain peas, corn, carrot
  • * One diced onion
  • 40g pkt of dry chicken noodle soup mix
  • *2-3 tablespoons of chicken stock powder (salt reduced if you prefer) – I find Massel the best!

Instructions

  • Place chicken and vegetables in slow cooker bowl.
  • Add stock powder and dry soup mix and fill with water to approx 2 inches below top of slow cooker inner bowl.
  • Cook for 8hrs on low – this is a recipe that is great to leave on all day while you work.
  • Before I serve I take the chicken out, remove the bones then return the chicken meat to the pot and stir.
  • It’s super easy with the frozen veg etc to assemble in less than five minutes and it tastes divine served with crusty bread rolls!!
  • Winner winner chicken dinner 🙂

We made this for my grandfather as he was very ill and we tasted it omg it was amazing he is a fussy eater but even he loved it! Will be a regular in our house over winter

  2. I have made something similar but uses cooked bbq chicken. But chicken wings and drumbsticks might be a cheaper way to go.

  3. Emma walker June 6, 2016

  4. Colleen Snibson August 18, 2016

OMG, this was so easy to make and scrumptious to eat. Will definitely be making this again.

  5. I made this one last night. My kids and partner loved it and I have leftovers for lunch today. Definitely will make this one again.

  6. Could you replace the stock powder/water with chicken broth? I am thinking of the tetra pack chicken consommé .

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central July 23, 2017

Sure it just wouldn’t be as strong a flavour as I make the stock powder up to 🙂

  7. Looks easy andbdelish will give this a go during the wish ,cant wait thanks paulene

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central July 24, 2017

      Perhaps
It would depend on your cooker
But long and slow is ideal 🙂

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central July 24, 2017

I find breast a little dry but if you preferred it then sure you could 🙂

  8. Joyce McInally April 28, 2018

This is one of the nicest soups I’ve ever made, very, very easy. I added a handful of barley as well, I will definitely be making this one again.

  9. Joyce McInally April 28, 2018

This is one of the nicest soups i’ve ever made. Very, very easy & i added a handful of barley as well. I will definitely make this again

  10. Just wondering if I could make this using leftover woolworths BBQ chicken? Would it still be worth putting in slow cooker? Have most of a BBQ chicken to use up! Thanks

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central May 24, 2018

Hi Mem, It wouldn’t have quite the same depth of flavour but you could 🙂

  11. I made this tonight after a friend suggested it and it was lovely. Served our family with a meal leftover to freeze. One thing I think I should have thought about though it that I have a large slow cooker and I think filling it up according to the directions might have been a little too much water, just dimmed the flavour a bit. Lovely, easy recipe.

  12. Tammy Noble May 29, 2018

Made this last night using drumsticks.
I usually just chuck a bbq chook, deboned and shredded, in, but the depth of flavour using drumsticks was out of this world!!
I threw in garlic (about 3tsp minced) to try to eradicate germs, and I also threw in shredded cabbage and some diced potato (because my husband thinks potato is life! lol)
I added chili flakes to serve (again, to bust the germs)

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central June 5, 2018

I haven’t tried to do so as this is more a broth style soup 🙂
If you try it let me know

  13. This soup was amazing OMG! I also added 2 diced potatoes. Have leftovers to freeze for lunches. Sure was a winner in this household.

  14. Samantha Cooper July 9, 2018

Made this tonight and the meat fell off the bone as i picked the chicken up!! The taste was delish!! The whole famil enjoyed. Easy way to cook a delicious soup the whole family enjoy ?

  15. Molly Letoa April 6, 2019

My 1st s.c meal left on its own while I was at work. DELICIOUS! Came home to a yummy smelling house ?
Very easy & the whole family loved it will be a regular with winter being on its way ?

  16. I cooked this last night and turned out amazing. First time cooking soup! I made heaps and we had it again tonight for dinner?

  17. Just wondering…another reviewer mentioned that for her large slow cooker, the amount of water put in diluted the flavour to a point. I have a 5.5 litre slow cooker – does anyone know if I should put a little less water in the bowl? It looks so delicious, can’t wait to try it.!
    Thanks in anticipation ?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central May 27, 2019

I do mine in this size and once I’ve added all the ingredients I still take the water up towards the top of the bowl. Bearing in mind I use a good serve of stock powder myself to keep it strong how we like it 🙂

  18. Made this for lunch today as the toddler has a double ear infection and won’t eat anything at all!
I used left over roast chicken from Sunday, peas, corn and carrot along with the salad onion. I did more chicken stock then recommended as I love it and love a strong taste! Will definitely be a regular especially in flu season!

  19. I made this tonight definitely a winner for my family my son had seconds tonight and also enough left over for lunch the next day.

  20. Sue Ratcliffe February 13, 2020

Great recipe. I used 1kg chicken breast and 500g drumsticks. The chicken didn’t dry out and it makes a wonderful thick soup which is mostly chicken so it’s a very filling meal.

  21. Natalie Dodds May 1, 2020

Another great soup added to my menu! I didn’t have any frozen veggies, so I used what I had available (celery, carrot, potato – all finely diced). I used chicken drumsticks and the meat was so tender and my house smelt amazing! Best chicken soup recipe I’ve made with lots of flavour!

  22. Phoebe Kerin May 1, 2020

I made this today – tweaked it by using liquid chicken stock (it was out of date haha) plus 2 stock cubes, there were 2 chillis on the bench that didn’t get used in last nights meal so I threw them in, garlic and a handful of pearl barley. Oh and seasoned with salt and pepper.
I also used two packets of dry chicken noodle mix as the packets were 30g.

Then I went away to work all day and 12 hours later was divine. Very happy and will be making it a lot this winter.

  23. Tracey Davies June 6, 2020

Healthy hearty chicken soup ! used organic chicken breast strips and added pumpkin & used fresh pre chopped mixed vegetables – nice..

  24. Jasmine Louise June 9, 2020

I was doubtful of this recipe as I’ve tried to make so many chicken soups but have never found any I’ve made the greatest taste… until now!! Omg yum! This is honestly so amazing and so EASY! The chicken just fell off the bone so ‘shredding’ the chicken was super easy and effortless. This is going to be a weekly meal for sure! ??

  25. We had this tonight.
    Super easy and tasty.
I happened to have all ingredients here with using chicken breasts instead of drumsticks.
We could feel it doing us good. Yummo

  26. Dean Pellizzaroli June 27, 2020

Hi Pauline , can this soup be made with a whole chook and de bone and shred the chicken at the end …
    Thanks

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central July 1, 2020

Yes it sure can …. just beware of the many small bones as it would be fall apart tender when you take it out

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central July 19, 2020

I use the 500g bag but no harm in using more if you like .. I always use the diced variety in little cubes

  27. Love this soup, so tasty and filling. I also put extra 2 minute noodles in bowls and topped with soup for a very satisfying dinner!

  28. I can’t wait to try this, I want to add a small pasta like macaroni. Would you add this at the start or near the end?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central September 12, 2020

I would add it in the last hour but beware it will absorb up a lot of the soups liquid if you do so 🙂
Have a read here >> Adding Pasta

  29. Judy Taberner October 18, 2020

This is the best chicken soup I have ever made! I used chicken thighs instead of drumsticks and shredded them at the end, also added chopped fresh veges( leek, pumpkin, zucchini, potatoes) and a handful of barley. Near the end I threw in some angel hair noodles and fine chopped spinach for colour. Yum! Thanks for this so easy recipe. I am 76 so you can always teach an old dog new tricks!

  30. OMG I absolutely LOVE homemade chicken soup so when I found this recipe I was so excited

I used 1kg of chicken thigh instead of drumsticks and 1kg of veg
This will definitely become a regular meal in our house, especially with a fussy toddler and a teen with braces

  31. Giuseppina Shaw March 18, 2021

This soup is the most amazing soup I have ever made. It’s so delicious and so easy to make. Best ever in our household.

  32. Kylie Read April 1, 2021

I made this last night exactly following Paulene’s recipe.Talk about easy and delicious! My fussy son gave it a 10/10. I used 2 kgs of drumsticks. Using chicken with bones definitely gives it a richer flavour. So economical too. The whole dish cost about $10 and makes heaps. Will be making this again. Winner, winner chicken dinner ?

  33. Lorraine Brinnand April 10, 2021

My husband and I love this soup. It is so tasty and very easy to make. I cook it as per recipe, I always use drumsticks and remove the skin before cooking. It is a regular winter soup for us.

  34. Shirley Burns April 21, 2021

Made this yesterday, loved it even the grandkids. It’s so easy but so good

  37. Made it yesterday with drumsticks, didn’t use the dry noodle soup mix but added risoni pasta in the last hour. Very yummy for this time of the year.

  38. This is the closest I’ve come to my Mum’s chicken soup – delicious! And so easy. I added pearl barley.

  39. Renee O’Neill June 1, 2021

I made this before work yesterday morning. When I got home the house smelt amazing. It was so quick and easy to put on and tasted delicious. Thanks Paulene for such a quick, and healthy recipe. Will definitely be a regular in my house ??

  40. This soup is so good and easy to make. I added more fresh vegetables and some garlic and it was delicious. Will definitely be making it a lot.

  41. Love this soup so simple and easy to make and also good to freeze. I change the chicken noodle soup and use the chicken curry noodle soup

  42. Giuseppina Shaw June 3, 2021

This soup is the easiest to make and ohhh so very yummy. This is a given in our household. I used cous cous to add a little something more to it. It was full of goodness!!!

  43. Maria Mihailidis June 12, 2021

I made this today. I put rice with the chicken, frozen veggies and 24 hot slow cooked stock…yummm.. taste tester winner meal, on the menu !

  44. Love this soup…. I’ve never made a chicken and veg soup until this one… love it, chuck it in, forget about and then voila… dinner…. I have made it several times now! I use chicken thighs in mine.

  45. YUM!!! I am not a boiled chicken/meat in soup fan but this was sensational. Made it for the kids and ended up loving it myself! Followed the recipe to a T and it was spot on. Love it

  46. Lyn Douglass June 17, 2021

Beautiful, tasty, nourishing, easy soup.. Thanks for sharing your recipe Paulene – it’s a winner!!!!

  47. CHRISTINE BLAIN August 6, 2021

I LOVE this soup!! Thank you for such an easy, tasty, fail-safe recipe. I use boneless chicken (whatever I have defrosted) … usually 500g of chicken thigh, and 500g tenderloins.

  48. Made this today and it is perfect. Simple recipe and tastes amazing. I used boneless thigh pieces (approx 1kg) and the meat was so tender and basically shredded itself.
Will keep this soup on rotation over the winter months and experiment with various vegetables.

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central June 30, 2022

I definitely recommend keeping in the soup but if you must change it I’d suggest extra chicken stock powder

  49. Just made this its amazing
I just used a cooked chicken 1/2 & 1/2 the other day so good

  50. I make this to the recipe with drumsticks for my elderly Mum she loves it. Makes a big batch good value

  51. Lesley Pates August 25, 2022

Best chicken soup EVER. Delicious. I make this again and again and again.

This is a staple of mine every winter, it is so easy and real comfort food. I’d never make the lamb shank ones mum used to make as they were so fiddley but this is perfect. Easy no fuss ingredients, can’t say enough of how much I enjoy this!

  53. Jodie McPherson April 3, 2023

    5 stars
    Absolutely delicious!
I ended up using 1.2kg drumsticks, 500g frozen vegies, fresh beans and two onions.
I also ended up cooking on high for 4.5hours.
    Chicken FELL off the bone!
I will definitely be doing this recipe again, everyone loved it!
    Thanks Paulene ?

  54. Lyn Currie May 27, 2023

Yum, tea for me and some in freezer. Used a 3lt s.c., also added mixed herbs to recipe.

  55. Ruvae Harrison May 29, 2023

    5 stars
Wow This was amazing. Hubby said very yummy. Enjoyed every bit. Even got some meals to freeze. Thank you Pauline. ??

  56. Kris McIntosh June 3, 2023

This the best soup. Quick and easy to prepare, makes heaps, so lots to freeze for later. I use drumsticks.

  57. 5 stars
I make this with a whole chicken. Put it on before I leave for work with either a bag of peas, corn and carrots or fresh/tinned ones depending on what I have. Cook 10 or so hours. It will be ready before this. It’s one recipe I can put on and forget. Come home and minimal effort and the rest is done.
Come home and take chicken out and shred it (honestly it takes minutes because it falls off the bone) add pasta (I use rissoni) and put on high for 30 mins or so. If you have a sear cooker putting it at 120 works too
We serve with crusty fresh bread.
Season if needed as you serve but it really needs nothing.
You can use any chicken for this but anything on a bone is best.

  58. 4 stars
My soup hating husband and kids even loved this recipe. So pleased as it was so quick to pop on before I went to work and the smell was amazing to walk into. Ten minutes to de bone the chicken and dinner was sorted with some delicious crusty bread. Will definitely be making again. Thank you Pauline ??

Legit a weekly staple now. Absolutely divine; not a heavy soup either….living in Darwin so it’s always hot but make this all the time since I’ve discovered it. Also made in the baby 1.5L slow cooker and adjusted recipe to fit but suggest no more than 2 drumsticks otherwise it’s too meaty

  60. Paula Laidlaw February 25, 2024

This recipe is the best for chicken soup. I absolutely love making this one, quick and easy.

  61. 5 stars
Put this together to cook overnight as im a shift worker, i used 1 litre of salt reduced chicken stock instead of dry stock powder and topped up with 2 cups of water i also added a tablespoon of low salt soya sauce , four cloves of garlic & two celery sticks chopped very finely.

  62. 5 stars
Really enjoyed this recipe. So easy and economical – six hearty meal sized serves for about $10. I had to make gluten free so added some lentils instead of the soup mix, and some garlic and a few herbs for extra flavour.

  63. 5 stars
Made it. Loved it and so did the SO who is a Chef. It’s a winner with us!

  64. 5 stars
Paulene Christie made this yesterday in my big SC. Used the 2 kg bag of Aldi drumsticks. I also added flat rice noodles in the last 30 mins or so. I followed your suggestion of 3 tbspns of massel stock powder and used a litre of Massel chicken liquid stock plus some water. It even got the Grandchild tick of approval with a “WOW thats good” . Will be a regular in my recipes now. 😋 😋😋😋

  65. 5 stars
Fantastic recipe. I made this in my big 7 litre SC using a 2kg bag of Aldi drumsticks. I followed Pauline’s recipe including using a litre of Massel chicken liquid stock and 3 tbspns of massel stock powder. I added a little water as well to bring it 2 inch below the top. Added diced carrot and celery. Towards the end of cooking I removed the drumsticks into a bowl, shredded the meat and took out all the bones then put meat back. I decided to add flat rice vermicelli noodles broken into long strands. The soup came out thick and lovely. Omit noodles if you want a liquidy soup. This soup has the Grandchild “WOW this is good” stamp of approval. It will be added to my list of regular recipes. 😋😋😋

  66. 5 stars
Made this tonight and loved it 🤤, only had 2 chicken thighs, next time will either do with the drumsticks or even use 3-4 thighs.

just wanted I need while sick in bed 🤒

  67. 5 stars
We love love loved this one.
I used thigh fillets chopped, fresh diced veggies and followed the recipe for the other ingredients.
We added some angel hair vermicelli for the last half an hour. My husband said this as my best chicken soup yet.

  68. Made this 2 days ago. Followed the recipe exactly using 2kg drumsticks in 6L slow cooker. So easy, so delicious, so much chicken in it, very economical. Will definitely be making it again.
Question- With using frozen vegetables, is it okay to freeze the soup?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central May 14, 2024

It sure is ok to freeze it Jenny – we do all the time and it defrosts and reheats fabulously 🙂

  69. Rita Price May 23, 2024

I made this soup last night. Halved recipe but it was still enough for 6 helpings (4 now in the freezer). Very easy to make & tastes good too!

Delicious. Made it the other day and super easy and convenient, however next time, will use salt reduced stock powder to ease the saltiness.

  74. tracey kent April 9, 2025

Made this it is absolutely lovely, The only changes I made was used vegetable and chicken stock no chicken noodle soup as have to cut back back on sodium for health reasons. Will be making this again easy and healthy.

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central April 10, 2025

Thanks so much for sharing your feedback Tracey! We appreciate it so much 🙂

  75. Adele Molnar May 13, 2025

I had forgotten how easy and delicious this recipe was! I don’t use the noodle mix, I prefer to have vermicelli with it, and I used frozen carrot batons because I’m not a fan of peas and corn. This is awesome for when my husband is away at work, and I want a light dinner, or even to take to work for lunch. I usually freeze half.

Chicken soup was my childhood favourite soup except it was cooked on stovetop.

I am very happy that we can do that in slow cooker. It was easy and taste similar. Thankyou for this recipe. Will make it again once a week during winter season!

  84. David Marshall June 10, 2025

    Quick and easy to make.
Delicious to eat. Hot filling soup is always a winner on a cold winter night.
Family loved it and there’s enough leftover for tomorrow.
    Good stuff 👍

  85. Kevin Robb June 17, 2025

So easy and so delicious, even the left-overs were awesome and didn’t last long! The only things I did differently was to use low-salt liquid chicken stock instead of water. Next time I will use a smaller onion and use chicken thigh fillets or cutlets. It’s on the must-do-again list for winter in my house.

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central June 19, 2025

That’s so wonderful to hear! Thanks Kevin 🙂
