Serving: 5
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 4 hours 35 minutes
Total Time 4 hours 50 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1kg beef mince
  • 1 heaped teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 heaped teaspoon minced ginger
  • 1 Teaspoon of Sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons of salt reduced soy sauce
  • 350g of slaw mix (shredded cabbage, carrot, celery, red onion)
  • 1/2 cup sliced spring onions/green shallots
  • 2 packets of instant 2minute noodles (I choose Mi Goreng flavour which is Soy and Mild Spice )
  • 4 eggs

Instructions

  • Add beef mince, garlic, ginger, sesame oil and soy sauce to slow cooker and cook on low for 4hrs, stirring occasionally to break up any lumps.
  • Add slaw mix, shallots and just 1 of the flavour sachets from the instant noodle packets
  • Cook this on low for an additional 30mins
  • Towards the end of this time cook your instant noodles as per instructions on stove top etc (but only use the one remaining seasoning packet with the two noodle blocks during cooking)
  • When cooked drained all the seasoned cooking water and add just the cooked noodles to the slow cooker.
  • After 5mins transfer to serving bowl/s
  • Separately cook your 4 eggs scramble while plating up your chow mien. A fast way to do this is to whisk the eggs and microwave for 3-4 minutes on a large flat bowl until set. Carefully slice/cut up scrambled eggs.
  • Top serving bowl with a few egg strips each.

Notes

  • Sprinkle some extra spring onion slices on top for a crisps addition as per photo
  • You may like to increase soy sauce or add extra spices like chilli etc depending on your taste preferences. As it is this recipe is mild and friendly for the whole family
  • A sprinkle of curry powder would also be a nice addition
  • It would work equally nice with other types of mince also
  • For a low carb option plate up your serve before noodles are added as I did for LCHF

Absolutely the best Chow Mein I have had for a long time and so simple and easy to make!!

  2. Sallieann Thompson October 1, 2017

This recipe is great. Yummy, easy to make and a good way to hide vegies for the fussy little ones.

  3. Absolute 5 star meal. Budget friendly and no fuss. I tasted before adding slaw and wanted a little more kick so I added the oil, chilli and soy sauce sachets from the mee goreng noodle packs. I also sprinkled the dried shallots over the top when serving. Beautiful meal whether you add extras or not

Made this tonight. Never had chow mein before but kids (2 teenagers) & I loved it. I cheated a bit to make it quicker & cooked my mince first before adding it to the slow cooker. Yum!

  5. Jan Sullivan October 3, 2017

Made this for fussy hubbie and it was an absolute winner. He is even taking the leftovers for lunch. So easy and delicious

  9. OMG. Made this tonight & it was so yummy. Hubby will eat it again & daughter went back for seconds & taking leftovers to work tomorrow night for tea. Hubby not a fan of slow cooked meals but didn’t mind this.

  10. Has anyone prepared and made this with changed ingredients suitable for gluten free eating?

  11. I want to try this recipe but only with 500grams mince. I suppose I just half all of the other ingredients and cooking time. Thanks

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central July 11, 2018

      Sure
Maybe just drop the initial cook time by 1hr

  12. Instead of noodles going to add 2 cups of cooked rice and sprinkle crunchy fried egg noodles and serve with a soft poached egg on to

When I was growing up my mum used to make chow mein all the time in the old electric frypan, and we loved it. But as an adult I discovered this chow mein recipe and we love it. We cook it regularly. We add approx. 2 tablespoons of curry powder at the start of the process as we like a bit of spice, but otherwise we make it according to the recipe. We do top it off with the egg and spring onions, but we are super heavy handed on the spring onions because it suits our tastes. Absolutely delicious, super easy to make and always gives us leftovers for lunches.

This is a great recipe. I already loved chow mein and this recipe introduced me to topping it with scrambled eggs… Brilliant…. And I do double batches as leftovers freeze very well

  15. Marg Marshall February 2, 2019

If you brown mince first, does this reduce cooking time by much? Thanks in advance

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central February 4, 2019

I don’t brown for this one but if you wanted to I would reduce cooking time by at least an hour
Being mince browning it would almost cook it anyway so the result of dish may not be the same as it’s intended to be

  16. Made this yesterday and it was great. Only thing I did different was halve the meat as I only had a 500g pack of mince in the freezer.

  17. Absolutely delicious. Kids ranging from 12 to 1 and everybody loved it.

  19. Julie Cruden June 5, 2019

Delicious. Hubby cleared his plate and he’s the fussy one. Definitely one to put on the remake list. Did one with chicken for the girl. Loved it too. So simple yet effective

  20. Made this today -yummy! Plenty for dinner and leftovers in the freezer for a “rainy day”. Note to self – remove dressing sachet before tipping slaw mix into slow cooker! Luckily I noticed it as I stirred it all together 😛

Made this last weekend, big hit with my husband and 2 adult sons (manchildren). I used 3 packs of ramen noodles and added dash of oyster sauce and sriracha hot chilli sauce to the mince mixture and some chopped chillies with the shallots to sprinkle on top with the egg because we like things a bit spicy. So delicious! Next time I’ll have to double the ingredients because there wasn’t any left for seconds and they all wanted more! Great dish ?

  22. Dannielle June 16, 2020

Such an easy recipe. Fed four and had leftovers for work! I did add broccoli, and a little bit of mashed pumpkin just to use it up before it went off which worked good as well. Could really add anything you like to it.

Great recipe…made it last night. Halved recipe as it is just me. Really enjoyed the flavours. Some leftovers so might use them in my pie maker ? win win

  25. Julia Watson May 21, 2022

Made this for the first time & it was delish. Hubby was impressed. I only used 500g of mince but used the same amount of everything else in the recipe. I also added some mixed veges & some broccoli & cauliflower just for some extra veg. Will definitely make again

OOMMGGoodness first time cooking this tonight. And hubby said it tasted better than the takeaway Chinese. He even went back for seconds. He gave it a 15 out of 10 ???.
Note: I used pork mince instead of beef cause that’s all I had in the freezer. I only made half of the recipe but had to add extra 2 tablespoons soya sauce for extra flavour

Husband liked it but for me it didn’t have any authentic Chinese flavours but I’m willing to try again adding more spices.

For dinner tonight I did a slight variation of this one ?
Added of splosh of hoisin today to the mince mix??
Instead of adding the noodles I served on our fave Mi Goreng noodles ?
with a fried egg on top ? and combination of fresh and crispy fried shallots scattered over?
& with a little drizzle of kecap manis ??

I made this the other day and it’s one of the few recipes that was a hit with the whole family (usually there’s one that doesn’t like something ?). My 14 year old daughter even had 2 huge bowls (double what her father had ?). I added some Hoisin to the mince mix and went a bit extra with the garlic and ginger.

This Chiw Mein was yum !!! I did alter the ingredients a little to what I had on hand but the overall flavour didn’t change & it was very morish – decided to save leftovers for tomorrow night. Thanks for sharing??

This is definitely now a family favourite. My kids have insisted that this is the only way I cook chow mein from now on. My kids are pretty fussy, so it’s a winner & so easy!

This recipe is an absolute hit with the family and on regular rotation. I’ve used both pork and beef mince.

  39. 5 stars
I used 500g Turkey Mince. Added the same quantities of everything else.

Added extra sweet chilli sauce, hoisin sauce. Also added extra veggies: 1 cup frozen corn and 1/2 Green Capsicum.

I just used 2 eggs for my serve. When I reheat I’ll make a fried egg to go on top.

It made 4 good sized serves.

It was a very mild flavour. I’ll probs add some extra zing when I reheat the leftovers. It also doesn’t produce a lot of moisture so it was a bit drier than expected, I just didn’t drain the noodles as much to compensate.

    First time making this recipe
    * Used pork & beef mince (1kg in total)
    * Added extra soy sauce
    * 1/2 tsp extra of sesame oil
    * Coleslaw mix didn’t have onion (so added half chopped red onion)
    * Extra shallots added
    * Stirred the cooked egg through at end of cooking time into SC
Quite happy with the flavour. Would not hesitate to make this again.

Made yesterday. I thought it was yummy but my partner and son unfortunately not fans. Said he felt it was missing something ?
I used pork mince. did add extra garlic and soy. Also added mushrooms, 1 tablespoon of hoisin and oyster sauce.
I would happily eat again myself.

OOHHMMGGOODNESS hubby loves this recipe so much. Giving it a big 10/10. ?. Going back for seconds means it’s pretty good. ??
NOTE: I tweaked the recipe to suit his palate.
I only use 500g pork mince and keep all the other ingredients the same. Except for adding extra 2 tablespoons soy sauce. And I add 4 tablespoons hoisin sauce , handful of corn, & capsicum. Oh and I do add 1 teaspoon dried thyme. Gotta have thyme in your life ??.
    Thanks ?

This is the first chow mein I have made in my slow cooker and it got the thumbs up from hubby and me. Easy and quick to make too. I added a good squirt of both Worcestershire Sauce and HP Sauce too. I also used low carb noodles and fried our eggs. Will definitely make again.

  45. 5 stars
Easy and delicious. I added a tablespoon of curry powder with the noodle seasonings and because I’m lazy I just broke the noodles up straight into it when it had an hour to go with about half a cup of hot water. Hubby wouldn’t normally eat cabbage so I made it for myself but when he saw it and I convinced him to try it he was hooked and even went back for seconds. Can’t wait for leftovers for lunch.

Always a winner in our house. Great mix of flavours. I love adding eggs to dishes like this too so that caught my eye when I first made it.

  47. Hi Paulene
Always love your recipes!! Wondering if you can do this using the Mingle brand Chow Mein? I just wont be adding the noodles.
    Thanks so much
    Lou

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central April 21, 2026

Hi Louisa – no problems with using a packet mix with your mince instead 🙂
