Serving: 4
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 4 hours
Total Time 4 hours 10 minutes
Servings 6 as side dish

Ingredients

  • 3 large thinly sliced potatoes
  • 1 small diced onion
  • 3 rashers Bacon (fat removed optional)
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 3/4 cup milk,
  • 1/2 cup Cooking Cream
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 1/2 - 3/4 cup Grated Cheese

Instructions

  • Spray slow cooker bowl with non stick oil spray.
  • Layer 1/3 of potato slices in bottom of bowl.Add half of onion and half of bacon. Layer 1/3 of potato slices on top.Add remaining half of onion and bacon.Layer remaining potato.
  • In a bowl stir milk, cream, garlic and salt and pepper to combine. Pour over potatoes.
  • Cover and cook on HIGH for 2hrs then LOW for 2-3hrs depending on your cooker.(Auto function for 5hrs will achieve the same result)
  • Half an hour prior to serving top with grated cheese and cook until melted.
  • *Notes*- Every slow cooker is different. If you worry your potato bake is getting too dry you can add further milk/cream or even just milk. It will all still come together by the end.
  • This is the perfect sized potato bake for the 1.5L baby slow cookers
  • The extra sauce in picture was just something I added at the time for extra flavour - totally optional - some people like a squirt of mustard also

I add a few teaspoons of french onion soup to the cream for a bit extra flavor ?

I use tin Cream Chicken soup instead of milk & more cream if needed

This was delicious and lovely and creamy. I added 2 teaspoons of vegeta powder to the dish at the beginning and sprinkled the cheese with paprika at the end. I cooked in my 1.5litre and it could have gone a bit longer. Next time I’ll actually set it to cook approx 8 hrs. A really great side packed with flavour.

  4. I made this the other week for a family gathering. I did it without the bacon and it was sensational. Everyone loved it. Will definitely make again

  5. My favourite potato bake. Great side dish for so many meals, in fact I’m making it again today.

  6. When I first seen people talking about this recipe, I thought surely it wouldn’t be better than the traditional way.. I’m now so so glad I tried this!! Absolutely delicious! I made a little extra sauce as I added one more potato and cooked for 5 hours (3high, 2low). Will never make potato bake any other way!! Thank you 🙂

I cooked this for the first time today and i left out the bacon and cheese and i found it was lacking something to make it a bit more taster and i added a bit more minced garlic but it didn’t really help with to make it a bit more taster

Has anyone made a double lot in 5litre slow cooker? If so how long and what setting thanks in advance ?

    1. Paulene @ Slow Cooker Central June 4, 2023

Hi Chantelle, if it’s a big full 5L I’d give it 3hrs high then 2-3hrs low to be sure – check that everything is cooked through tender before serving and keep potato slices thin 🙂

I made this today. Next time I would use tea towel under lid as it turned out a bit watery.

  13. Hi. I did the potato bake in my 1.5lt slow cooker. I did add a whole chorizo chopped into small dice. As my slow cooker is new for me I cooked it 2hours high and 3 hours low. Next time will do 2 high and 2 low. It was tasty though. Thanks paulene.

cooked this one a while ago it was so easy (usually preboil potatoes for potato bake totally unnecessary for this one) lovely creamy result plenty of leftovers which can be eaten cold as a salad

Fantastic potato bake!! I doubled the recipe because we had a large family gathering. There was enough for everyone and even left overs! 😊

That’s fantastic Dianna! 🙂 Did you have to give it extra time for double?

  16. Dianna Harman June 9, 2025

    Hi Pauline
Yes, I cooked the potato bake on high for 3 hours and then low for 3 hours – it definitely the star at our late lunch! Thank you 💕

So easy to make, and so tasty too! The only things I did differently was add a cornflour slurry, and use grated Colby instead of grated Tasty. This is high on my do-again list!
