Serving: 6
Ingredients
- 1 kg thin beef sausages
- 2 onions sliced
- 1/2 cup Maggi Rich Meat Gravy powder

- (You can use any gravy mix you prefer. If using sachets I would recommend adding at least 2 pkts with appropriate water included as per gravy instructions)
Instructions
- Pre brown/seal sausages in pan and pre cook onion for 3minutes until translucent
- (This pre cooking stage can be skipped if you prefer)
- Add sausages and onion to slow cooker bowl
- Add gravy powder and water combined
- Cook on HIGH for 1hr then LOW for 4hrs
- Can be kept on warm longer if required

This recipe elevates average sausages to an amazing meal. I followed the recipe and quickly browned the sausages (this got rid of some of the extra fat in them). I didn’t bother pre-cooking the onions, I just added them raw. I also added half a cup of beer (and didn’t add as much water). Turned out amazing, my family couldn’t believe how yum it was.
Will make again.
Thanks so much!
I’ll have to try the beer version 🙂
I used gravox brown onion gravy and not as much water, turned out amazing! Such a east meal to make and just had it on a bed of mash potatoes 🙂
This was the best ever recipe. My gravy turned out perfect thxs
MY FAMILY WONT HAVE SAUSAGES ANY OTHER WAY !!! absolutely delicious
Wow! 🙂
I loved this recipe, I did make a change I used Beef stock instead of water, browned the sausages before placing them into slow cooker, 15 sausages and mashed potatoes feed a family of 5 adults
I have been making this for a long time now-never fails. Now my teenage daughters are cooking it!
Loved this recipe! So simple ad cheap…. even the kids loved it (and they are fussy)
We had this on Monday …oh my I didn’t need to wash the plates …mopped with fresh bread !!
This is now our family’s favourite !
Thank you!! xx
I am not a fan of sausages but i have to say this dish is delicious.
This recipe is great! I have made it several times now and the gravy is always perfect 🙂
Made this tonight, it was so yum, definitely making again ?
We love this recipe but I am just curious, if there is left overs, can they be frozen and reheated? If so, what would be the best way to do it? Thanks
I would freeze them sure .. and reheat on stove or microwave
Made this today it was so yummy will be making this again
Hi, sorry for silly question but is the Maggi Rich Meat Gravy powder hard to find…. I’m in Victoria and can’t find it at the supermarkets closest to me. Is it usually with the gravy mix products ? I used Brown Onion gravy mix today but would really like to make it same as your recipe. Thanks
Hi Kim
I buy it in a bulk tub from my local wholesaler if that helps?
But any gravy you love will work good too 🙂
Loved it will be making again
Absolutely loved this dish so tasty, I added mushrooms the last hour though, my husband even ate it and he doesn’t like sausages but said it was nice and he’d have it again, I sent a photo to my Daughter and she replied saying it looks yum and she to isn’t a fan of sausages either lol, a definite hit here ?
This recipe is so easy. Used less water and added some honey chipotle bbq sauce, garlic and Italian mixed herbs. Also added some large sliced carrots at the beginning and some grated zucchini at the end. Served on mash.
I’m waiting to call ok this but with only 5 sausages as it’s just me and my partner. How much of each ingredient would you suggest?
Drop down to half, like ONE packet of gravy mix for example and one onion and half the water 🙂
Thank you Nicole, I was wondering if I could use gravox…I can’t wait to try this recipe for tonight
Absolutely my favourite recipe so far since being on this site. Thank you. I did only have 500 g sausages, and replace with gravox and only used 400 mls of water because I did not have your ingredients but it turned out ok…many thanks, sausages will never be the same again in my house <3
Hoping to try this recipe ? and poissibly trying to add guiness? Do you think it would work out ok?
I’ve never tried to be sure 🙂 Love to hear how it goes if you do 🙂
Is this recipe suitable for freezing?
Yes
I add a little curry powder sometimes yummy!!
Quick easy & tasty minimal effort to prepare. Entire family thoroughly enjoyed the meal Served with mashed potato & vegies
Just wondering if I could use the recipe to make a sausage hotpot with sausages cubed potato’s and carrots etc?
You sure can 🙂 Keep hard veg cut small though so they cook through tender
Made this recipe time & time again!
Love, love , love it! ?
Saw a post for this recipe and decided that would be dinner.
I have a very fussy 7yo and he devoured the sausages for dinner.
Rather than regular mash I did onion mash and bake at home bread rolls to mop up any left over gravy.
Will make again and again and again 🙂
We had this meal for the first time last night and it was SO good. The family loved it! I’m not sure why it took me so long to make it. I did find it a bit watery so thickened the gravy at the end with some cornflour. I served it with mashed potato and veges. Yum!!!
I have never been a fan of sausages until I tried them like this. It has now become one of my favourite meals!
One of my go to favourites. I make it in big batches and freeze in containers with mashed potato & mixed veges. Great for a nourishing after work meal when I work late & can’t be bothered cooking. Just grab & go out of the freezer.
Halved the recipe and turned out amazing!!! So easy!!
This is delicious, cheap and easy! I used Angus beef sausages as I don’t like normal beef ones. It is THE bomb!!! Yum x
These sausages are absolutely delicious I served with mash and veggies
Made sandwiches the next day Mmmmm thank you Paulene ?
Hi…Just wondering if everyone browns the sausages first in frypan or has anyone just put it all straight into slow cooker without browning first ?
I always put them in raw, no browning 🙂
This is a good recipe and this is absolutely tasty and very enjoyable and i will diffentley make this again
If you doubled this recipe- would you cook for longer and how long? Want to make it at work for customers ?
Still a similar time, maybe 30-60mins extra at most
Simple but amazing and delicious, if i don’t have the Maggi gravy I sometimes add a pack of French onion soup.
Very tasty. The family all gave it a thumbs up.
Always love this meal on a winters night with mash and peas
I’ve just come home after a stint in hospital. So handy to have this meal in the freezer (amongst others), it’s so tasty I find I needed to use more of the gravy powder than the recipe called for. I use the smaller chipolata sausages. That’s the beauty of the slow cooker, especially when you live alone, it’s marvellous for making extra meals to freeze.
Wishing you a speedy recovery Susan x
This is so tasty!! We used chipolatta sausages & they were so tender – beautiful with sides of creamy mash potato, carrot & broccoli.
I made this for tea last night and it was so tasty , thank you for sharing your recipe ,will make it again that’s for sure ?
This was so tasty and so easy!! Definite hit for my family. I just used the gravy we had in the fridge and it worked well. Having this sparked memories of my childhood. Sausages and gravy was one of our favourites growing up. Will definitely be a regular for my kids now too.
So easy to prepare and so delicious! Will be making this regularly!
Winner of a recipe in our house. Made on several occasions loved by all the family !
Ok well I made this a few nights ago but due to getting it on later then expected was ready for dinner that night ? but we had it tonight OM Freaking G all plates were licked clean. I add some bacon garlic and mushrooms. This will now be added to the menu on a regular basis. Thanks Pauline
Cooked this for first time tonight and was a great success. Definitely cook this again
Love this recipe. Easy, quick & very tasty. We have taken to using Chipolatta sausages in this – find them a lovely change from our every day sausage & it also helps us keep an eye on how much we’re eating.?
Yummmmm! Was a big hit for my family the sausages were so soft
I make this all the time. I add cubed potatoes and carrots into mine it bulks it out abit
A favourite in our house! So quick and easy and with some mash and veg a delicious dinner is ready after work.
I made this for my family and they loved it. It’s so easy too.
Yum yum yum. This is the best sausages in brown onion gravy I have ever had, will definitely be making this again
The only way to have sausages. This is so easy and soooo tasty!
I’ve made this many times. One of of day my favourites. Thank you
Wow! Second time making this and the Maggi Rich Meat Gravy powder makes it next level yum! I’m not too fussed on sausages since I gre up eating them probably twice a week just fried in a pan with no onion or gravy. Didn’t precook any of it just used Woolies Herb and Gsrlic Beef sausages x 16 and followed the recipe. Thank you Paulene for a lovely way to improve sausages ?
Made this tonight
Was amazing and so easy
Yet another one of my favourites
Did recipe exactly as is, served with a pasta carbonara packet and veggies. Absolutely delicious!!! Clean plates all round – the maggi gravy is so sooo good. Thankyou??
Wow. This meal was amazing. Really Yummy Made exactly as the recipe said. Hubby couldn’t get enough. Gravy was amazing.
I cooked this tonight for my husband and my husband. We absolutely loved it. Will definitely make this again.
This is the first recipe I cooked from this site years ago, and we still have it on a very regular basis. It works well with flavoured sausages too. Occasionally I will add some garlic or mushrooms, but it doesn’t need them. Serve with mash and veg – comfort food at it’s best!
love this on a winters days , it’s so easy to do and rich in flavour, excellent with mash, cabbage and carrots ?
the entire meal can be prepped in the morning.
and sometimes tonspice things up I put a good slug of hp sauce in the pot ?
Like many others have said, “recipe did not disappoint.”
Absolutely makes tonnes of gravy, don’t forget to mop it up with some bread, nom nom !!
Another favourite in our house – i do add mushrooms but then, we have mushrooms with just about everything. Only problem with favourites – makes it difficult to try new recopies when partner would eat the same thing week after week.
What can I say!!! beautiful dish.
I used Lamb sausages, along with my low salt roast meat gravy.
I thickened at the end with a cornflour slurry.
Hubby enjoyed it so much.
Another winning meal ?????
Delicious every single time! Cooked as per recipe. I did not pre-brown the sausages or onion as I was short on time.
I had a tray of beef chipolatas and usually make sausage rolls out of them, but don’t eat them myself as they are beef! Bought them on special, found this recipe so decided to try it. They weren’t defrosted properly when I threw all ingredients in, high for 4.5 hours, and they were cooked to perfection, hubby loved them! I even ate 2! Served with mash and green beans, and then bread to mop up the delicious gravy. Next BBQ I think they will make a lovely extra dish for people to help themselves to and the gravy will go nicely with their steaks. 1 tray = 2 meals for us, so one portion went in the freezer.
Another amazingly simple and delicious dinner.
Made this last night, halved it for 2 people. Came out perfect. Served over mash and veg and it was demolished. Gravy was perfection.
Might I also add, that Maggi Rich Meat Gravy is the bomb. Sourced it off Amazon for those who struggle to find in store. Also noticed our local butcher stocks it too. Definitely worth investing in. I will never buy the other instant gravies again!!
In Perth you can get the Maggi Rich Meat Gravy at Spudshed and it definately is the bomb!!! Can’t say I would ever really consider sausages in the SC but this recipe has changed my opinion…. LOVE it and so does the rest of the household.. Thanks for sharing 😀
This dish was simply tasty. Sure you can jazz it up with flavoured snags, but all we had were beef ones. Delicious as lazy Sunday night dinner and heaps of leftovers. Definitely a winner in my house.
Love these – a favourite in our household ever since we first did them. Always have some in freezer as standby.
I made this last night and everyone loved it. I did brown the sausages which made it better I think. I also added mushrooms and garlic to the recipe and added 750mls water instead of the 1 Ltr which made the sauce thicker. Couldn’t find the Maggi gravy so replaced with Greens brand. Served with mash. 😋
I’ve made a variation of this recipe by swapping out the sausages for beef-and-pork meatballs (not browned), dicing a large onion instead of 2 medium ones, using a low-salt gravy powder, and stirring in a cornflour/cornstarch slurry (3 tablespoons cornstarch/cornflour to 3 tablespoons water).
It has a milder taste than I expected, so don’t skimp on the onion. It was still delicious, not at all salty, and there were no leftovers, everyone wanted more. The family wants this one again!
