Serving: 5
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 5 hours
Total Time 5 hours 15 minutes
Servings 5

Ingredients

  • 1kg Oyster Blade steak (or any affordable casserole style steak)
  • 3 tablespoons of creamy bottle style mild American mustard
  • 3 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 2 heaped tablespoons of plain flour
  • Salt and Pepper
  • 1/2 cup of tomato sauce/ketchup (I used low sugar but you can use regular)
  • 1/8 cup of soy sauce (I use reduced salt but you can use regular)
  • 1 large brown onion thin sliced
  • (2 large plastic freezer bags)

Instructions

  • Add mustard and sugar to a freezer bag
  • Add raw steaks to this bag and toss and rub around to coat the steaks with the mustard/sugar mix
  • In a second freezer bag add flour and season with salt and pepper
  • Tip steak from the first bag into the second flour bag and toss around to dust them with the flour mix
  • Remove steaks from bag and lay them in slow cooker (single file if you are able to)
  • Top with sliced onion
  • Combine the sauces and pour over the steaks
  • Cook on LOW for 5hrs

Notes

  • Serve with vegetables and mash and pour over the lush gravy
  • You do not need to add any water to this dish 🙂 That's not a typo. However some have been adding half a cup so that's up to you but it really doesn't need it
  • This was one of my favourite recipes I remember my mum cooking as a child and if she was here now I'm sure she'd be so proud to see her recipe represented here for you all to try - enjoy! xx

  2. Paulene what a amazing true old school recipe from your loved one’s absolutely beautiful 🙂 I give you 5 STARS would give you ten ..Pam xx

  3. Made your Nanas steak and my overly fussy husband gave me my once a year compliment on my cooking. He and I both loved it and yes I put more water in it for more sauce, so delish, will be a regular feature meal. Thank you nan

  4. Natasha Heymer

This was a big hit in my house one that will be on the menu often. So tasty ? Thank you for sharing Pauline

  5. Can i do this with 500 grams instead of 1kg please? Will it change the cooking time at all, I have a 6 litre slow cooker? I’m happy to keep other quantities as we love gravy. Thanks 🙂

  6. Melanie Bartsch

I made this tonight with chicken breast instead of steak. I also only had Australia Mustard, and also had to substitute about 1/4 cup of tomato sauce with Passata because I ran out of sauce. Seriously delicious! Although I didn’t exactly honour your Mum’s recipe, she was definitely a legend leaving you that gem. <3

  7. Colleen Arnott

Delicious dish! We all wanted to lick our plates clean. My slow cooker runs a bit slower than I’d like so I ended up having it on for an extra 1 & 1/2 hours with the last 2 hours on high. I will factor this in to my calculations next time and there definitely will be a next time….many next times in fact. Thank you so much!

  8. Karen Stuckings

My daughter made this for us for Mother’s Day dinner. She wanted to me say that she has aspergers and found recipe very easy to follow. We substituted slice onion with 1 teaspoon of onion powder owing to texture issues with onions. The sauce was lovely and thick with great flavour. We served with chips. Will be making this again

  9. Cassandra Marks-Quinlan

  12. Jennifer Williams

Made this for dinner last night and it was wonderful. The meat was so tender and the gravy and onions just made it perfect.

  13. I made this for my family tonight and they all loved it. I used diced steak and it turned out heaps nice. thanks again.

  14. Absolutely delicious recipe packed full of flavour. Served with mash to mop up the lovely sauce over the steak. Highly recommend recipe!

  15. Nicola carruthers

Simply delicious & the whole family loved it!
I used rump steak & wholegrain mustard instead of the American style.
I did have to layer the meat in a smaller size slow cooker but at 5hrs on low it was cooked through.
I will definitely be making this again!!

  16. Brenda Callaghan

I made this the other night 🙂
    OMG!!!!!
It is so scrummy – tender, delicious, and just a hint of mustard
Will be making it again this week 🙂
Ta so much for sharing such a mouth watering recipe 🙂 x

  17. Made this for dinner tonight….omg this was delicious, the thick scrumptious gravy was to die for, made exactly as recipe, but used gravy beef and cooked for 5 hours ???

  18. Sherene Gibbons

Made this for the first time the other night and WOW, so warming and comforting and really packed a punch in flavour. Will definitely be making this again……and again……..and again………

  19. One word – YUM!!!
I used chuck steak which I browned along with sauteed onions for this and the end result was simply delicious. Give this one a go, you won’t regret it ?

  20. absolutely delicious,,cooked it with double the sauce to soak up the veggies ,will be having it many times over

  21. This was so delicious . I was worried I put it in too late so I cooked on high for 1.5 hrs then low for 3.5 hrs. I used 5 oyster blade steaks so I had to stack them a bit to fit them in the slow cooker. It was perfect. My kids asked me to make it again so is definitely a new favourite in our house.

  22. Donna-Maree Carroll

This was my first ever Slow Cooker cooking experience and even though my slow cooker broke down and it ended up taking me 2 days to make before I could purchase another slow cooker, it was well worth it! The meal was beautiful, heaps of flavour, ever so tender and really very easy to make. If I can make this then anyone can but it also shows how putting the right ingredients together gives a meal the perfect taste. I’ll definitely be making this again!

  23. Gabriele Smith

This Dish is to die for….. sooooo yummy and easy to make …. can only highly recommend….
Another winner in our house…. xxx

  24. This is a winner. I didn’t have blade steak so used gray beef. Hubby loved it and told me to mark as make again.

  25. Renee Gillmore

Thank you for a lovely recipe, I doubled the meat and the tomato sauce but not the soy also added a 1/4 of water.

  26. Jessica Camilleri

Absolutely loved the sauce. Was so close to something my dad used to make when he was a butcher. Used pieces of chuck steak and will definitely be making this again

  27. Another amazing recipe off this site. Was a big hit in my house, i even wanted to lick my plate clean lol. Will certainly make this one again 🙂

  28. Had this for tea tonight, it was fantastic, the family loved it, will definitely be doing it again real soon.

  29. Hubby says it’s one of the best meals I’ve cooked. Told him credit goes to Paulene’s mum. He gave me the oddest look….as he mopped his plate of sauce with bread ?
Beautiful and perfect blend of flavours.
    Absolute hit in this house.
    Thanks Nanny…and Paulene .

  30. Melanie Thompson

Put this on before I went to work yesterday afternoon for hubby’s tea. Hubby said that we have to make this again as he absolutely loved it and he has added the recipe to our favourites list. I had a taste when I got home from work and OMG it was yum, definitely will be making it again. I didn’t sear any of the meat, just threw it all into the sc as per recipe, so simple in easy

  31. Victoria Duncan

This recipe is one for the whole family. It is sooooo good, it will be one you make over and over again.

  32. Melissa Zirilli

Omg! I read everyones reviews so I decided to try this. All I can say is we will be having this at least once a week! It was to die for!!!!! Even my 9 month old demolished it lol! Thank you Pauline for submitting such a devine recipe. X

  33. This dish turned out beautiful. I used the oyster blade steak and it just fell apart it was sooo tender. The flavours just worked all together. It was an absolute winner in my house.

  34. We just love this. My husband wants it every week. It’s an absolute winner here. I even have my daughter making this and her family love it.

  35. Michelle Grayland

This is super easy and delicious! I added mushrooms at the beginning and carrot later on, peas when I served it up. Goes well with mash.
I have a super fussy hubby and he loved it!

  36. Have made this twice now and its so yummy. The grandson had 3 helpings last night and the whole family loved it.

  37. AMAZING. So quick and easy to prepare aswell. Wow, just had it tonight and can’t wait to make it again already ?

  38. We absolutely LOVED this recipe! My husband was so happy that I had made enough for left overs for the next day, he asked me to do this again ASAP!

  39. I was tentative making this as I’m not a huge fan of mustard, but I’m converted!
This was so amazing hubby and I both licked out plates clean. I think this will become a happy addition to our meal rotation.

  40. This dish was so much better than expected! It was a big hit in our house and even my fussy daughter who doesn’t like any meat except sausages and chicken ate every little bit off her plate!

  41. Dear nanny. Thankyou for this contribution to my world. Your recipe is simply stunning. Easy to prepare. My youngest son who automatically turns his nose up and wont try anything new ……… Loved it! I tried the tea towel method for the first time! Thankyou

  42. Lovely dish and enjoyed by all. The only thing I will change next time (and I will be making it again) is to reduce the amount of sugar.

  43. Catherine Coleman

Thank you for sharing this recipe…even my fussy boys ate this tonight…It was just so tasty and yummy.

  44. Thank you Pauline. This was very easy and extremely tasty. We all loved it. Equal to any restaurant food! A1.

  45. Elizabeth Gomez

If you’re not sure they’re telling the truth… they are!!! This is the most amazing tasting thing I think I’ve ever cooked!!! Nanny, you are a genius!!!

I added carrots about an hour in and mushrooms with an hour to go. Served with steamed broccoli and sour cream and chive mashed potato.

  46. I only have cubed stir fry pieces of beef, would that still work? And I think there’s only about 500grams there but we like our sauce so would it be ok to keep the same amount of sauce?
Will be cooking in a 6L slow cooker ?

  47. Thank you <3 we made it and it was Devine! I ended out doubling the sauce as there just wasn't enough for our liking, but it was sooooo yummy! Will definitely be making it again!!

  48. Tamika Jamison

Oh my goodness Paulene! Made this tonight and clean plates all round! My 10 year old son usually takes forever eating dishes like this but he absolutely wolfed this one down! You know you’re onto a good thing if this happens!

  49. My talents with the SC are limited to chilli and spag bog. I haven’t had much success with other recipes. I tried this and I think I failed again. The onions weren’t cooked, the steak wasn’t fall apart, the sauce was quite thick and not very gravy like. The taste was good though so I’m keen to try it again and see if I can cook it better with different cuts of meat or longer.

  50. We love this recipe! If you want to know what it tastes like before cooking, it is technically a BBQ sauce recipe, so very similar flavours. Others have complained about the sauce being too strong, we find adding an extra tablespoon of sugar softens the flavours and it tastes more like ‘ribs’. Others say its too sugary, so you could use low sugar tomato sauce and half the sugar.

  51. This deserves 10+ stars! Most amazing slow cooker meal I’ve made! Yummy yummy in my tummy! Will be a regular in our house ?

  52. I used whole grain mustard and djon mustard and added fresh mushrooms in the last hour was so delish even my fussy kids loved this thank you

  53. Vanessa Aggett

Made this tonight for the first time and wow. It was the best thing I’ve eaten that came from the slow cooker so far! I used dijon mustard. Perfect.

  54. I made this last night for the first time and it was a hit!…. the whole family loved it! Thank you so much for sharing. I will be making this again and again ?

  55. This is the best thing we’ve ever made in our slow cooker. The steak melted in your mouth and the sauce was delicious. Can’t wait to cook it again. Didn’t have any mustard so used dijonnaise instead and it worked great

  56. Wow! This was so good! Very rich too, I thought it may have needed a bit of water as it didn’t look like there was enough sauce, but I resisted, the end result was so saucy that I used bread to soak it up! Will definitely be making this again!

P.s I used chuck steak and diced it up.

  57. Felicity Barnett

Has become a firm favourite and regular that I try and have at least 2 dump bags for it in the freezer 🙂

Due to allergies we switch the mustard for a 1/4-1/2 tspn of mustard powder and use Coconut Aminos sauce instead of Soy.
We also alter the method a little instead of tossing the steak in the flour and then in the sugar and mustard we add them to the sauce mix, so my daughter can put it on without me having to clean the whole kitchen 🙂

We also tried it as a dump bag and it was just as good as the first time we had it.
Place all ingredients in bag except the flour and freeze.
Add a tblspn of cornflour with some water when putting it on and stir through.

    Thanks Paulene 🙂

  58. Taneesha Williams

    Absolutely delicious!
I am a very fussy eater and am hesitant to try new things but this was hands down one of the best dishes I’ve made!
It was so delicious my 8 month old ate half of mine (definitely making double next time)

  59. angelica Lichtnerova

Love recipe. I didnt real the entire recipe before starting but it turned out lovely. and I used Spring onion instead of normal onion. Hubby had 2 extra helpings, used bread to get the last gravy out of the SC and he isnt a big eater! A favourite in this house

  60. Very nice! halved the recipe as there is only two of us 🙂 not quite as much sauce as I imagined, but flavour was lovely. Happy to make this again, but will add just a little bit of water towards the end next time.

  61. Sorry but I didn’t really like this, it tastes like beef and tomato sauce. So not worth the wait.
    It made my house stink.

  62. Melissa Jacobs

Wow! Absolutely amazing!! Looove this! Like others I resisted the urge to add water … honestly, trust the method! It’s perfect!!

  63. Priscilla Te Moana

Loved this recipe Pauline! Definitely a favourite in the household…I doubled the sauce ingredients as we preferred more of the sauce couldn’t get enough of it…I also did 2T of brown sugar and still tastes great!

  64. Made ‘Nanny’s Braised Steak’ for dinner tonight. I’d never tried it before, but wanted dinner time to be super easy so I put in 5 small unpeeled potatoes (halved) and 2 carrots, chopped (in large pieces). The vegetables cooked really well and I just served with boiled peas . Unfortunately, I personally found it to be very, very sweet so I would cut the sugar down to one tbsp (or less) if you aren’t big on sugar. I put in 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar and would probably do that again next time. I found the onions to be a little under-cooked for my liking too, so I might put them in under the beef next time. The method produced lovely, tender meat, but I wasn’t very keen on the flavour of the sauce so I think next time I will use a beef stock cube dissolved in 1/2 cup water, 1/3 cup tomato paste, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar (for taste and to further tenderise the meat) and some herbs spices (and maybe a tbsp or two of mustard). I will put the onions under the meat, still coat the meat in seasoned flour and add a little water towards the end of cooking time if I find there is not enough gravy. I would cook for 6 hours too.

  65. Delish absolutely delish! Lick your plate delish! I can’t put my finger on it, but I was transported back to my Grandma’s cooking. Highly recommended.

  66. Made this for my mother and father today & all I can say is that I loved it! Ma & pa did too but mum said she didn’t like the taste of the tomato sauce as it was too strong for her, but my dad and I didn’t even notice it! Super yummy! I added maybe 1/4cup of beef stock xxxx

  67. Made this today for the second time. It is a wonderful easy dish and went down well with everyone, clean plates all round! Though I did cook it for 6 hours as I wasn’t home to switch it off after 5. Will be a regular dish in our household 🙂

  68. Made this tonight. Hubby said it was that good, it could be served in any Pub.
This is definitely a winner in our house.

  69. Made this delicious dish using gravy beef! Cooked for seven hours on low and next time I would cook it for eight hrs as it was a wee bit tough. Had to add some water as it was drying out at the start. Will make again.

  70. Allison Collins

I made this last night for the first time. I used diced beef instead of steak and stirred in a heap of microwave cooked vegetables at the end (potato, sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot and peas) and it was amazing! A huge hit in our house which is really saying something as my family are very hard to please. Thankyou for an awesome recipe!

  71. I don’t eat a lot of meat and cannot remember the last time I ate red meat, for that reason. It is usualy my least favourite.

After reading all the reviews for this recipe, i gave it a try. AMAZING.

I used no-sugar-added tomato sauce and American mustard. I used Coconut Aminos, which is a soy sauce alternative.

As others have mentioned, it doesn’t seem to have enough sauce when you first put it in. But the finished product is super saucey!

After it was cooked, i folded cooked veggies in- sweet potato, carrots, beans, peas and zuchini. This also helped bulk up the serving size.

I will serve it in a bowl of fresh spinach.

This recipe will now be one of my go-tos!

  72. Love this recipe. I find it a little easier to put the flour and the mustard/brown sugar on plates instead of the freezer bags. I find this recipe also perfect to leave all day without issue.

  73. Made this with diced beef. Threw all the wet ingredients into the bowl, mixed in the flour then the beef. Mixed until the meat was well covered. Put some carrot and turnip and swede in with it. Plugged it in and went to work. Came home to the most amazing stew. Served with mash – a winner.

  74. Mr 18 months took one look at this and decided he didn’t like it. Cue the crying. Eventually he gave in and tried it. Cue more crying because he liked it. He went on to finish all the leftovers.

  75. Maria Monica Peterson

Made this tonight for my family and absolutely loved it. Will definitely become a regular dish in our home

  76. OMG made this was a bit worried because I’am not a big mustard fan but can tell you it worth the try will be made regular in my house thanks heaps for this recipe

  77. This second time I followed the recipe and cooked it on low for eight hours I doubled the sauce mixture. I still had to add water to stop it from burning as per the first time I cooked it. Was delicious again.

  78. Has anyone tried making this into a pie? How is the gravy sauce as is or is it too strong and need to be diluted and then thicken to be edible in a pie? I ask because I don’t eat meat and therefore haven’t tried it. However made this for a friend who loved it but have left overs so thought I could make into a pie.

  79. I made this last night. It was really nice. Served with mash and beans. Next time I’ll double the gravy to have lots more to soak into the mash

  80. I have made this a few times and it is my fav. It is also one of the few slow cooked meals my hubby asks me to make.

  81. Another success. Cooked on low for an extra hour as I used gravy beef. Very tasty & I too was amazed by the amount of gravy that was produced. A definate winner!!!!

  82. Love this recipe.
I even use this sauce for sausages. Tastes amazing. Thanks Paulene for sharing your mums recipe. ?

  83. How could I cook this for 7-8 hours on low? I’m hoping to put it on before work. Just add liquid or? Thank you

  84. Delicious and tender beef. I did use half the sugar. You’ll be amazed at the flavour result from these ingredients. We made a big batch and had leftovers sliced and warmed with salad on a fresh bread roll the next day.

  85. Absolutely the best recipe I’ve tried. I had guests over and they asked for the recipe. I wouldn’t alter anything on this recipe 🙂 Thankyou!

  86. Hi just about to make this ,quick question i s the mustard the american yellow mustard ? Its the only type i could find in the shop and also i have no onions will this affect the flavour ??

  87. Vanessa Giardina

Absolutely loved this recipe. Didnt think that the gravy was going to thicken up but it got there at the end. Picked a great recipe for a first timer on the slow cooker… Everyone loved it 🙂

  88. My partner and I loved this dish, it was so easy to prepare and I will be definitely making this recipe again.

  89. Yum! Braised steak is a favourite in our family but this is definitely next level – so rich and delicious for so few ingredients! I served it with some buttery mashed potato and mixed vegies. I put in on when before work and only had 500g of steak so threw some lamb in too and half a cup of water- it was perfect, so mouth watering-ly delicious, even my fussy girl devoured it, can’t wait to make it again.

  90. Absolutely a favourite in my house! Never need to adjust the recipe it always comes out perfect no matter what cut of steak or beef i use and everyone cleans their plates in no time!

  91. This recipe is divine thank you Paulene Christie its so, so beautiful.. Hubby looovved it!!
I used gravy beef so tender & sauce leaves you wanting more, more, more !! ?? ??

  92. Christine Damrow

This was delish. I used gravy beef in mine only because that’s what I had but that was the only change I made. Will definitely make this again

  93. Ashlea Jackson

We love Nanny’s braised steak, usually have it once a week. Kids devour it and always want more. It’s so yummy

  94. I made this using gravy beef
    Absolutely yummy .
Hubby is quite fussy but he loved it.
Will make this again and again

  95. Thera Donnellan

Its a family favorite in my house. I have 3 kids all aged under 7 and they cant get enough of it… so tender, so delicious, cheap, quick and easy to make, i try and make it a weekly meal

  96. So good it has been requested again! Family loved it! Will add some vegetables though next time.

  97. I love this dish, it’s now a regular in our house hold. My husband doesn’t like it so sweet so I only do half the amount of sugar.

  98. Way too sweet for my family. I had to add 1 cup of beef stock after only 3 hours because the sauce was too thick and beginning to burn. Won’t be making this again.

  99. Yum yum yum. A little sweet so I will probably play with recipe a little but definitely will make again. Would make a great pie filling too ?

  100. Made this tonight, it was so good even my toddler loved it. Will definitely be a regular meal in my house

  101. I had a 1.1kg Rump Roast that needed to be cooked so thought I’d give this recipe a go…
Bomb diggity!! Even my two fuss pots (4&6) devoured this which is saying something. I only used 1 Tblspn brown sugar & used Dijon Mustard instead of American. Nannies Braised Steak will definitely be a regular in our house 🙂

  102. absolutely delicious!! i was a bit weary of making it to begin with, because of the mustard and soy sauce, but really it just adds to the flavour, will deffo make it again, thanks for the recipe
    ????

  103. Katherine Buck

Made this tonight for my family of 6 and wow was a big hit even with the fussy husband and kids I used Dijon mustard instead of the American mustard and diced casserole steak and I can say will be a regular in our house ?

  104. It was sensational I was nervous but the meat melted and a nice amount of gravy served with sweet potato mash and mash potato for my fussy ones will definitely make again ??

  105. Oh my gosh this is anazing my 3yr old is extremely difficult to please, but this recipe has him munching back his food.

  106. Amazing ….. I cooked mine with potato and carrot at the end of cooking time I added hokin noodles loved it 100%

  107. Bloody delicious…+ I’m kinda hard to please with slow cooked meals!
I made a couple changes, no sugar, no salt…mainly because my sauces weren’t salt reduced + I figured I could add later if needed, extra pepper, a good teaspoon of garlic + I diced the onions instead of slicing.
This is my new favourite recipe + will be a regular meal in my house.
The meat melted in my mouth + it was just so tasty!
Thank you for this recipe. Love, Love, Love!!

  108. Amazing!! This is to die for seriously. Is cook this every night just to have 5 minutes peace whilst everyone is scoffing their food and kicking their plates. And so easy to make!

  109. Had this for dinner tonight and it was amazing! Loved the flavour and it just melts in your mouth. It was a huge family hit and we will definitely be putting it on our list of regular meals ?

  110. Unfortunately hubby and i arent fans. the flavors were abit weird when they all came together. soy tomato and mustard with sugar was a bit strange 🙂 each to their own

  111. I wish I knew what I was doing wrong but my meat was as tough as boot leather. The sauce was delicious but couldn’t stomach the meat.

  112. I was unsure about how this would taste as the combination of ingredients seemed unusual. I shouldn’t have worried. It was amazing. I used Dijon mustard because that’s all I had. Otherwise, no substitutions. It was amazing. This is my new go-to braised steak recipe, thank you so much for sharing.

  113. We loved this! Only changes were I added mushrooms as had some in the fridge and also did 2 hours on high at the start as our steaks were rather big. Will be a regular at our place from now on. Sauce is delicious!

  114. I made this today, with kg of cubed chuck steak. I am a bit worried there is not enough sauce, so added 1/2 cup water. Hope it trns out ok

  115. We absolutely love this meal, thank you so much for sharing your nans recipe with us Paulene ? The first few times I made this with Dijon mustard and have finally tried it with american mustard too…. Just so easy and delicious ?? A definite regular meal for us?

  116. Wow wow wow, melts in the mouth and packed full of flavors. I just added some garlic to the sauce and cracked black pepper. DEVINE . Always going to be on my to cook list. Love it and thank you ??

  117. Finally tried nanny’s braised steak today using gravy beef ?
I just marinated in one bowl & coated in flour in another bowl (as I found it a bit easier).
I ended up leaving it for 6.5 hours but probably wouldn’t go past 6 next time as it juuuuust started to dry out in the corners.
Tasted great though and I would definitely make it again ?? Served with mashed potatoes ?

  118. I made this tonight for the first time. It was soo easy and sooooo delicious. My husband is very hesitant when I make anything new but he absolutely loved it. I made it with thick scotch fillet steak and cooked for 5 hours. The meat was sooooo soft. Will defently be making this Again.

  119. I would like to make this. Will this dish work with curry powder? instead of mustard as my child as an allergy to mustard. Thank you

  120. I finally got around to trying this popular recipe for my family, I can’t believe it took me so long to give it a go! Lol
It was absolutely delicious, a definate winner!
I just served it with a salad and little bread rolls to dip in the sauce, and everyone loved it.
Thanks Paulene for sharing your mum’s recipe xx

  121. Made for the first time tonight. So easy to make. Hubby gave it 10/10 and the kids who refuse to eat steak 9/10. Will definitely be making this again. Thanks for the recipe ?

  122. Absolutely loved this recipe! I didn’t have any oyster blade steak so I used osso bucco. It was divine and melted in my mouth. I served with mashed potato and pumpkin with steamed mixed vegies.

  123. I made this last week, it was absolutely delicious. Husband didn’t stop raving about it. Lovely flavour. I cubed my meat instead of leaving the steaks whole.

  124. I tried this today for the first time and I’ll never do it any other way! Best braised steak and onion EVER! I made double quantity in the hope we would love it so tomorrow I am using what’s left over to make pies. THANKS for sharing your family favorite Pauline ?

  125. Made this one tonight for the first time. Family loved it! Served with mashed potato, peas and corn

  126. Kim Blackburn

    LOVED this recipe!
    Very easy and very adaptable!
Used double the amount of onions as suggested by someone on the slow cooker FB page and it was perfect! Even the 2 year old finished his helping!

10/10 will be adding this to my go to recipes ??

  127. Was so good! I used half Dijon mustard/half mayo to make up America mustard. No need to use bags I just used bowls to dunk and turned out great a little bit extra onion was perfect, 5 hours was the exact time and it came out great. I served with home made sweet potato fries and coleslaw

  128. Wow just wow ? this was sooooo good.
I marinated the meat in all the stuff for at least 2 hours before, and I coated the onion in brown sugar a hour: I also added 1/8 cup of bbq and a extra tbsp of soy sauce, cause I’m a piggy and love lots of sauce( also the 1/2 cup of water)
My dad went in after his plate and dipped bread into the sauce well so did I.
Definitely going to have this again

  129. Your Nans braised Steak was Amazing!!!! Thankyou. Tip: I didn’t have bottled mustard so I just mixed the Raw Sugar and Dry Mustard together and put it in the shaker bag???

  130. Finally got to make this as I kept forgetting to buy the mustard (forehead slap)
This was delicious and so easy definitely will be a regular on our menu
Thanks Paulene for another amazing recipe

  131. Enjoyed this but husband thought it was a bit too sweet! Will try again with no sugar as the tomato sauce is sweet enough.

  132. Katie Partridge

I’m the laziest cook ever, I just chucked it all in the slow cooker and voila everyone thinks I’m an amazing cook. Loved it. Thank you Pauline. One of the best.

  133. Yummy, hubby loved it, he said it just might be his new fave, I might try making pies with the leftovers as others have mentioned, such a great dish, thanks for sharing “)

  134. This recipe was new to me so I followed the exact measurements, and it was beautiful. A big hit with the kids and husband! But next time I make it I’ll probably drop the level of mustard and sugar by maybe a tablespoon and add an 8th of wosterchire sauce as well. I added half a cup of water to this perfect recipe as I like sauce over my mash and vegies but otherwise, this will be a regular for our family

  135. Made this Tues night, hubby said it was beautiful, gave some to daughter to take to work, she also enjoyed it. I’m yet to have some but it smelt lovely through the house. Similar to my mums. Thanks Pauline. ?

  136. This is one of my adult kids favourite meals. Never a clean plate left when we have this delicious meal.
Thank you to your mum, it truly is amazing

  137. Meat was very tender but is a very sweet dish. Had to adjust quite a bit. Next time I will cut the brown sugar out altogether and see how it goes.

Did have to add the water as well as there was minimal sauce and I like a bit of sauce

  138. Going to try this tomorrow. Can I add Mushrooms as well? If so do I need to add water or any other liquid? Will give feedback and rate tomorrow

  139. I made this for the first time yesterday. Absolutely delicious! I added crushed garlic and Worcestershire in the sauce. Hubby loves it too and he’s pretty picky.

  140. This is just the best go to meal for tender meat & a great flavoured dish . Using an inexpensive cut of meat it is on our families regular to go list for slow cooking.

  141. This is a family favourite of ours! I don’t add the brown sugar as I find it gets a little sweet. But it’s really easy to make, it’s even better reheated the next day!

  142. Micheline bennett

Wonderful recipe! Family loves it, just don’t overdo the brown sugar, will make it too sweet if your heavy handed ?

  143. My family love this!! The last time I made it they told me it was too long since the time before and I had to do it more often!

  144. Lovely! Added mushrooms and only 1 table spoon of brownnsugar, kids and hubby enjoyed very much. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  145. Lovely recipe was a hit with my husband and family I used lamb peices as that was what I had in the freezer hubby said the gravey was so good he kept comenting on it the whole time he was eating I did add water so we could have plenty of it just cause we love the extra sauce in our house hold will definitely make again that’s for sure is a new favorite

  146. I absolutely loved this receipe!
    Will definately be making again
Loved with mashed potatoes and veg.
Seriously the plate was licked clean hahaha!!

  147. Just making this but when I got my blade steak out of the packaging it is quite thin, would I reduce the cooking time.?j

  148. This was so delicious! Was a big hit with my family. I recommend serving it with mash to really enjoy all the yummy sauce. This time I used a sweet Bavarian mustard, so skipped the brown sugar. Also, instead of using bags to coat the meat, I just spread the mustard onto the steaks then dipped them into seasoned flour on a plate before placing them in the sc pot. Love that you can use such simple inexpensive ingredients to make such a tasty meal! Would give it 5 stars except I’m not sure if I love it quite as much as lamb obsession!

  149. Delish! Made this today added mushrooms and about a 1/4 cup water. Def making again and might make into pie filling

  150. Loved this dish! So yummy and easy. I did 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and threw in a few sliced mushrooms and green beans that were on their last legs. Also added half a cup of water as I like sauce!!!

  151. I finally got around to trying this recipe and I wish that I had of tried it earlier! It was full of flavour and my family loved it so much that it’s now on my meal list.

  152. David Speight

Pauline thanks for sharing this great recipe. I followed it closely but had no American mustard so used Dijon instead. Used 2 onions instead of just one large one. Also added about half a cup of water. Was a huge success. Next time I think I’ll only use 1 Tbsp sugar and maybe add some Worcestershire sauce. Maybe a couple of garlic cloves and perhaps some chilli.
Thanks again, was soooo delicious ?

  153. Hi, do you use whole pieces of steak rather than diced or sliced? Which are better cuts please? Thanks

    1. I did whole steaks but I’ve also done it with diced. Choose a meat that isn’t super lean and really lean can be dry. Cuts like oyster blade, chuck steak, and other stewing type steaks end up moist and tender by the end 🙂

  154. What a lovely recipe. We added a few cloves of garlic as well, didn’t add any water. My whole family loved this dish which says a lot for our household

  155. Best braised steak ever!!!! Will be a regular in this household. It’s a must if you haven’t done it yet you won’t be disappointed.

  156. Leonie from Victoria

I’ve been given a porterhouse roast (1kg) – would it work with this recipe? It sounds really yummy! What cook time would you recommend?

  157. Absolutely amazing. 2 adults 4 kids not one complaint. I used 1.4kg chuck steak so added 1/4 cup water just to stretch the sauce. The flavor was amazing and the meat just fell apart. Every plate was empty and basically licked clean. Will be making again

  158. Amber MacFarlane

This recipe was absolutely Devine! Hubby and thoroughly enjoyed it. Will definitely become a regular in our household. ??

  159. Just made this for the first time and OMG it’s the most delicious meal ever. My 2 fussy kids both absolutely loved it as well and my husband would have gone back for seconds if there was any left.
Paulene you are an absolute genius and ur mum would be so proud of you

  160. I made this the other night and it was delicious! My kids licked Their plates! Perfect with mash and veggies!
Left overs were used for home made pies the next night with Mac and cheese and my kids and their friends loved it! Full of praise. Will definitely be a house hold fav now. Thanks for sharing ?

  161. I was a little concerned about this one. Mine sc usually runs hot so everything finishes quicker. This took longer and I was freaking out that it wasn’t going to soften and it was ruined. But it did and it was amazing ! I think I would cut the sugar down a little but otherwise was perfect and really hit the spot. Thank you!

  162. Made this for dinner tonight was absolutely delicious. I didn’t use the freezer bags I mixed the flour & seasoning in a tray & added 1tbs of mustard powder mixed altogether. Cut the meat off large oyster blade steak dusted in the flour & straight into SC added rest of ingredients cooked on low for 8hrs. Thickened sauce with some gravy mix as we like thick gravy. Was definitely a crowd pleaser. 10/10 from the family.

  163. Kathryn Rickwood

Definitely delicious, I tried adding extra water like some suggested, but don’t think it’s necessary.

  164. Yummy dinner eaten by alll, even turned the little left over into pies.
I halved the brown sugar and added a splash of water 🙂

  165. Amazing!! Only put one tablespoon of brown sugar and added half a cup of water at the start due to wanting more sauce and then two tablespoons of gravy mix at the end to thicken it up… Absolutely fan-dam-tastic!!! Definitely will become a regular dish in our house!!

  166. The only thing stopping me from giving this dish 5 stars is that I’m not a huge fan of gravy. It’s a very tasty meal, and served with mashed potato, carrots and peas it is quintessential Winter comfort food! Very reminiscent of dishes my grandmother used to make. My 19-yr-old son licked his plate clean. My boys love casseroles, so this is a huge hit with them.

  167. Can i make this with Scotch fillet steaks, i have 3 of them, If so how long to cook for ,and do i need to brown meat first .

  168. One of our favorite dishes!! I made this for a couple friends and their kids and everyone loved it to. Even asked me for the recipe!

  169. I usually don’t leave a review because I’m lazy but have my favourites I regularly do. This was a first for us and was an absolute hit even with little kids! Will do regularly now. We served on mash veg and had it for leftovers the next night also. Love it.

  170. Thus is simply divine! I used minute steaks as thats what I had in freezer ! Try this recipe you won’t regret it…?

  171. Your Mum certainly knew her flavours Paulene! This is a delicious, easy and economical meal that everyone loved. I will definitely be making it again! Thanks for the recipe!

  172. Amazing flavours, easy & so economical. Cooked exactly as per recipe with 2 sliced carrots added. Perfect. Thank you!

  173. Oh my gosh!!!
This was to die for!!! My hubby cleaned the plate, and I had to fight him for the leftovers for lunch lol.
He even got stuck at work and it had to sit for 2 hours longer and I was still melt in the mouth amazing.
I just made as is and didn’t add water and was not disappointed in the amount if sauce ?

Highly highly recommend this recipe ?

  174. Have been using this recipe for some time & it is one of my favourites. I always make it to the recipe & it always turns out perfect. The only thing I have done differently when I made it yesterday was to leave the steak to marinate in the bag for a few hours in the fridge. I think it made the flavour a bit more intense. Delicious.

  175. Absolutely fantastic recipe, will definitely be making it a regular in this household the only thing I would change is a little less cooking time or ¼ water as my slow cooker cooks hot and I didn’t have enough of the delicious sauce that i started with…oh and maybe doubling the recipe as I wanted 2nds

  176. Absolutely delicious! All plates licked clean! Served with creamy mash potato and broccoli and cauliflower! Highly, highly recommend!

  177. Used Oyster blade steak. Delish-ioiso!! Melt in the mouth.. Converting my mum to slow cooking plenty of leftovers for her in the freezer she loved the flavour hit!

  178. Chris Cherry ? everyone calls me Nanna which I love ??..l

    Amazingly awesomely delicious, so easy
Just loved every mouthfull. Thanks so much for sharing ???

  179. Chris Cherry ? everyone calls me Nanna which I love ??..l

Absolutely amazingingly delicious. The only change I made was halved the brown sugar.?? Thanks so much for the recipe Paulene.??

  180. Absolutely beautiful everytime. I do this as a dump bag. It is so easy and then you have a delicious meal you just need to thaw and cook. You can add whatever veggies you like to this. I often cook pasta and toss it through the sauce. We often eat the pasta and veg with this sauce for a meal its so yummy. Also good with rice or mash.

  181. This has become a regular meal in my house. The kids 12 and 10 love it also.
I’m cooking it again for dinner tonight.
I wasn’t sure about the mustard and soy sauce but what a great flavour ?
Thankyou for sharing your mums recipe ?

  182. I love this recipe. My family fav and go to meal. I also add chopped carrots, mushrooms and red onion, plus garlic. I use ketjip manis so I barely use any brown sugar and I also chop new little spuds to make it a meal all in one.

  183. LOVED EVERY MOUTHFUL ? big hit with my family of 8. I made it with Oyster Blade melt in your mouth and the sauce was soooo good with mash. I had to thicken the sauce at the end as the meat lost so much liquid but 1 tablespoon of cornflour and water did the trick while stirring on HIGH for 5 minutes.

  184. Hi Paulene
So I’m doing this recipe but with a 1.4kg leg lamb…. what can i substitute the american yellow mustard for instead as i dont have any I have Mustard powder & Dijon Mustard what one would you reccomend please….I will be adding more of the ingredients to make more sauce aswell….any help would be greatly appreciated…???

  185. So, I had this for the first time (Deffo not the last..) and what a ripper of a meal, I used Blade steak and upon eating, the meat pretty much melted in my Mouth, great meal and I had as a side dish, the Hassleback potatoes, great combination In my Opinion.
Definitely give this a try if you haven’t, you won’t be disappointed.

  186. Had my Mr 7 make **Nanny’s steak** all on his own. Super easy & super tasty ??? Mr 7 said “his meat tastes delicious”

  187. We had this again tonight with a side of Caulie and honey mustard potatoes and carrots and it was great, I made a slight change instead of tomato sauce, I used smokey BBQ and the flavour was very good..

  188. Absolutely beautiful ? will definitely be making it again..the meat was so tender and everyone in the family loved it 🙂 7 clean plates came back, some with lick marks lol

  189. Omg this is Devine, my partner even commented that he thinks it’s the best meal I’ve served him in 7 years ? I did however use icing sugar thinking it was the flower but then when I noticed I also then added the flower. He said it’s tasted like rib sauce.. will definitely be doing it again and watching what I use but don’t think there would be much difference just not as sweet 🙂

  190. Made this for dinner last night but with about a kg of rolled pork, doubled all the ingredients as we love the sauce and it was a complete hit, everyone loved it even the 5 kids, and was enough leftovers for lunch today

  191. Made this last night for the first time and it was delicious!!! We saved the leftover gravy and had it with our eggs n bacon for breakfast….. sooooo good ???

  192. Cooked this dish today..smells divine.
It Cooked a bit quicker in my slowcooker.

I used 2 Porterhouse steaks weighing
    500 GM’s.
I added two carrots and 4 small potatoes.
and all the same quantities of sauce etc, just reduced the sugar a little and I added a small amount of water.
I have tasted it and it’s going to make a lovely dinner.
    Thankyou for the recipe.

  193. I found this recipe easy to prepare and it is very tasty. My husband requests it often. It reminds me of a dish my grandmother used to make. Sooo satisfying!!

  194. Vickster Pittie

This is seriously one of my all time slow cooker favourites. I am a harsh critic as I often find I have to add extra flavours to a dish …… not this one! I LOVE it!! Flavoursome, wholesome, true comfort food that I remember eating when I was a kid growing up. Goes delicious with buttery mashed potatoes. Thank you Pauline for sharing your Mum’s recipe….nothing better than these recipes from long ago to invoke all sorts of wonderful memories.

  195. Cheryl Shimmen

Someone mentioned in the comments that Nannys Braised Steak is GF.
    Is plain flour gluten free?

  196. Made this for dinner tonight…was absolutely delicious. Didn’t make any changes and didn’t need too…everyone loved it. I will be making this one again ?

  197. Perfection on a plate! Seriously yum! I’m mad at myself for waiting so long to try it. The only change I made was to use 2 tablespoons of brown sugar instead of 3. Instant family fave and we will use the leftovers in the pie maker!

  198. Tried this one for the first time tonight, very yummy – served with cheesy mashed potato and veggies. Would be great in a pie. Substituted the mustard with whole grain mustard and tomato paste with tomato pasta sauce.

  199. This is yummy. Did not change anything.
Used whole steak instead of dicing.
Will be in my repertoire from now on.?

  200. Made this for the first time tonight. I added some mushrooms and it was amazing. My goodness! Delish. My husband actually got a slice of bread to mop up the gravy on his plate.

  201. Yum, yum, yum!!! This was devoured by everyone in our house. I’ll have to make double next time. Served with mash, peas and corn. The perfect meal. Would be a tasty pie filling too!!

  202. Made this for the first time last night. Used 2 thick slices of rump steak & the exact recipe for the sauce. I didn’t use bags to coat the meat though, I just put the mustard sugar mix in a bowl & dunked them in then into the flour I put on a plate then into the slow cooker. Came out beautifully tender, sauce was delish & the onions were cooked really nicely too. My husband whos fussy with steak loved it & when I asked if he would have it again he said yes. That’s a win in my book!

  203. Absolute favourite with all the kids and adults, but this week with steak been super pricey, I used about a kg of rolled pork shoulder and stuck to the recipe, cooked for 6hrs on low and it was AMAZING!!!

  204. I made this with 4 sirloin steaks. Only used 1tbs of brown sugar. Will leave out next time. It was delicious ?

  205. Made this last night . The sauce was totally delicious. We had hot crusty rolls to sop up the juices . My son loved it too. Definately will make again

  206. Loved how simple yet absolutely delicious this recipe is, it won everyone over! I made it overnight on Saturday and let it cool to make into a deep dish pie on Sunday.

  207. Absolutely amazing, steak just melts in your mouth , I followed the recipe but also added mushrooms, will definitely be making this again

  208. Omg I used Chuck Steak but made the rest as per the recipe.

This one is going on my list of regulars. It’s beautiful

  209. Vivienne Rochford

I made this for my fussy (but lovely) husband a couple of months ago and we both loved it. It is simply the most delicious slow cooker braised steak recipe and it will be cooked frequently in our house (especially in cooler weather). Thanks for sharing your Mum’s recipe Pauline.

  210. I’ve made this now 5 or so times and it’s always a winner. So delicious and such a comfort meal that we look forward to each week. Thanks.!

  212. 5 stars
I made this last night and it was demolished before photos could be taken . Totally melted in our mouths and hubby took leftovers to work for lunch today . Definitely 100% tender and so tasteful . I served it with mashed potato , carrots and broccoli .

  213. 5 stars
Nanny’s Braised Steak was very tender, cooked on low for 5 1/2 hours, so easy to prepare, will be making this SC meal again ?

  214. Maria Mihailidis

    5 stars
Loved it. Tasty and tender. Next time I make it again, I will put a bit of water, as it was cooked in my 5.8ltr vintage Monier slow cooker and put on earlier as it cooks slower. Bless your mum for the recipe and a huge thank you Paulene for sharing a treasured gem. God bless ??

  215. Absolutely amazing. Its always a big hit when I have made it. Have shared the recipe with many of my friends.

  216. This was so delicious. Meat was so tender. Will be a regular meal in our house. Served with mash and veges.

  217. 5 stars
I’m not sure if I left a review or not but this dish is so tasty!!

I made it very low sugar, gluten free and soy free.

    Modifications:
    1 medium onion sliced
    15g low sugar mustard
    137g passata (instead of ketchup)
4 tsps fish sauce Squid brand (instead of soy)
1 scant T of Natvia (instead of sugar)
    Salt & pepper to taste
Beef stew meat — I used 750g oyster blade slices

Instead of coating the meat with flour etc, I completely omit the flour and I just put in the onion, the meat & mix everything else together and pour on top while in the slow cooker.

    Absolutely delicious!

Then this recipe suits a low carb, gluten free & soy free lifestyle.

  218. Big hit with the family
Didn’t have chuck steak or American mustard so substituted for rump steak and French mustard was absolutely delicious will definitely be making again

  219. 5 stars
very tasty. used 1tbs each of wholegrain, mild & hot English mustard. stirred through a packet of gnocchi & peas & corn with 30mins to go. will definitely make again.

Delicious and a shout out to my childhood comfort meal. It’s on the menu next time my 90y old mum comes to visit. She’ll love it ?

  222. OMG! Cooked this for the first time last night! We added mushrooms and it was absolutely delicious. There is only 2 of us so plenty of leftovers. Will be cooking it again.

  223. This was divine! I didn’t have American mustard so I used 2 T of Dijon mustard instead. I also didn’t do the bags. I spooned the paste in and around the meat and sprinkled the seasoned flour over the meat. Definitely a winner! Thank you

  224. 5 stars
so easy to make and a winner for my son and me. substituted onion for onion flakes, used tomato sauce and passata because I ran out of sauce. also added about half cup of water. smelt so good while it was cooking

I might cut my meat the night before next time ? Thanks Paulene for generously making your recipes available for us 😉
