Potato Gem Potato Bake
Everyone loves a slow cooked potato bake but some days you just don’t have the time to prepare with regular potatoes. This was created as a FAST, super easy alternative that takes no time at all! This one is a big hit with the little people in our home ?
Serving: 5
Ingredients
- 1kg bag of frozen potato gems
- 300ml cooking cream
- 1 x 40g sachet dry French onion soup mix
- ½ tsp cracked black pepper
- 1-2tsp of minced garlic
- 100g diced bacon
- 1-2 cup grated tasty cheese (depending on how cheesy you like yours)
Instructions
- Add frozen gems to your slow cooker and top with the diced bacon (raw if fine)
- Combine cream, soup mix, pepper, and garlic and pour over
- Cook on HIGH for 2.5hrs, adding grated cheese on top in final 20mins.
Notes
- We use what’s called potato gems from the supermarket freezer section in Australia which are small little hash brown like pieces, also called Tater Tots in US.
- Just check towards the end that there is not burning around edges but that gems are still all nice and hot, if your cooker cooks hotter than some they may be ready 15mins early.
- I used a round 5L slow cooker which made a deeper bake. If you use a larger one that allows the bake to be a thinner total height this may also speed up your cooking times also.

This was really good to have as a side dish, the only thing I didn’t do was measure the cheese because the people in my house love cheese
It also works with frozen potato wedges delicious
This is delicious, a true comfort food. I followed the recipe exactly and has turned out as expected each time. Would highly recommend this recipe ?
Scrum-diddly-umptious!!!!
What an easy alternative to the regular potato bake.
I had all items on hand, except the potato gems, which I grabbed on the way home from work.
Dinner was ready & on the table in 2.5 hours as the recipe states.
No slaving over the stove, throw it in &walk away.
We served it with chicken tenders from the air fryer. Super easy Sunday dinner.
That’s awesome – thanks Marti for taking the time to leave your feedback! 🙂
this is such a great recipe and easy to make this was a winner in my house . we will cook this again taste great
So great to hear Rebecca! Thank you 🙂
I cooked this recipe up as Wednesday’s dinner (eaten in the wee small hours of today) and I’ve rechristened with a Canadian name, Scalloped Tater Tots. Try it; you’ll like it–I know I do! The only time-consuming step is dicing the bacon.
Just buy diced bacon – winning!
Great review 🙂
Everyone enjoyed this one. Served on top of savoury mince. Will be adding to rotation to be served in a variety of ways! Thanks for another versatile dish!
Thank you for taking the time to leave such a fantastic review Amanda – never thought to serve it like that! – love it 🙂
I liked this one
I have done this on a baking paper base so much easier to remove and easier to clean up too
This was so easy to make, it will be added to my go to recipe’s. Used potato wedges instead of gems.
That’s great feedback, thanks Amanda 🙂
