Total Time 6 hours 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken
  • 1 whole lemon
  • Juice of another lemon
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1/4 Cup of honey
  • 1/4 cup of soy sauce
  • Cornflour (to thicken)

Instructions

  • Make a cut in a lemon and stuff it with 1-2 cloves of garlic
  • Place the lemon inside the chicken's 'clacker' ... that is it's cavity *wink*
  • Combine the juice of a 2nd lemon with quarter cup each of honey and soy sauce.
  • Pour over chicken and cook on low 6 hrs or until cooked through (varies between slow cookers)
  • I keep spooning liquid over during cooking to achieve this rich color
  • Thicken liquid with corn flour ( 1-2 tablespoons made into a paste and stirred into the slow cooker liquid) at the end for an amazing sauce.

What can I say, colour and flavour amazing. I did baste several times during cooking as recommended and got the beautiful colour as pictured. Very easy recipe as well so a winner here

We have had many versions (minus ingredients due to allergies) of Clacker Chicken before but tonight we had the original recipe using a soy sauce replacement and it was fantastic. Definitely doing it more often now as it is so easy and delicious 🙂

What more can I say, Clacker Chicken was delish, melted in your mouth and meet fell of the bone. Flavours were Yumm and is a definitely Favourite with my Family

  6. The first time I slow cooked a chicken it was using this recipe, and the chicken was delicious! I had a smaller slow cooker at the time and couldn’t fit a spoon down the side to baste with the liquid, so used a 10ml syringe from the chemist and that worked haha. I have done this with veggies down the bottom but family found the flavour of said veggies a bit intense – probably personal taste on that one :).

  7. My favourite recipe for chicken.
I’m making it today , not sure what to serve it with! Any suggestions?
    Was thinking Asian veggies!

Sounds good Linda! I love it with salad and wedges too 🙂

  8. Hi Paulene, just wondering if the cooking time would be the same for a 3kg chook? Thanks 🙂

I’d give that size and extra hour Kylie 🙂 Just test the meat in the centre of course to be sure before you decide it’s done x

Did this last night and added a teaspoon of ginger and garlic to the sauce as well…. so tender and delicious.

  10. Can you lay some baking paper on the bottom and up the sides to make removing the chicken easier or would that not work?

That looks very appetising. Where did you get sling from?
    Thanks Narelle.

Hi Narelle … I ordered mine on Ebay by searching ‘turkey sling’ or ‘silicone turkey sling’
Some kitchen shops and other online sellers would have them too 🙂

  12. A fantastic alternative to roast chicken. I put diced potato under the chicken and it’s delicious. We make this regularly and it’s always a winner!

    So tender and moist!
Used a smaller lemon and put half in then gramma’s scotch dressing, then other half of lemon. Secured with poultry pins. Lemon had garlic cloves stuck in each half too!

This is one of my extended families favourite recipes, ( feeding 4 adults and 2 children. ) I cook 2 chickens in 2 lg slow cookers, after they are cooked transfered chickens to oven to crisp up skin. Thicken cooking juices with corn flour. all served with roast vegetables and garlic bread…… yummo. any leftovers are demolished the next day.

We did this with thigh fillets, just left the “lemon up the clacker” out and as previously mentioned replaced the soy sauce with coconut aminos.
Just as good as when done with a whole chicken ??

This was so tasty & moist! The tang of the lemon through the chicken & the added tang in the gravy – oh yummmm. Strained the liquid into saucepan, added a cornflour slurry & a beautiful gravy to top it offAND plenty of it!!!

So darned easy and tasty. Served with steamed veg and poured sauce over everything on the plate. No leftovers for second helpings, so some disappointment there. Will def make again
