Total Time 7 hours 15 minutes
Servings 8 plus

Ingredients

  • 1 roast pork piece 1.5-2kg
  • 2 onions sliced
  • 1 bottle of smoky bbq marinade
  • 1 x 30g sachet of taco seasoning

Instructions

  • Add sliced onion to base of slow cooker
  • Remove any string from roast pork and place pork fat side down, on top of onion
  • Combine marinade and taco mix and pour over pork
  • Cook on high for 7hrs or low for 10hrs
  • BEFORE shredding pork remove and discard fat and rind layer
  • Serve pulled pork on soft white bread rolls with salad leaves
  • Note:
  • Don't be concerned if you see lots of liquid build up during cooking. Pork absorbs this when shredded into it
  • You can substitute the marinade for your favourite smoky bbq sauce bottle if you prefer
  • Great dish to self serve at your next party

  1. The family loved this. Could probably do with two packets of the taco seasoning as in the end it was just a sweet bbq flavour. Very easy to do with left overs

  2. Brilliant recipe! So easy, delicious & versatile….our first batch lasted 3 days between the two of us haha! I’ve made it two more times and will make many times again. Add chilli powder if you want more spice

Definitely one of THE BEST pulled pork recipes I’ve tried, is always a hit with my family.

  4. Lovely flavour. Made it with 1kg pork roast. Lots of flavour and sauce. Will make this again for sure.

Made this with the biggest pork roast that would fit into my slow cooker, buns, coleslaw and fresh steamed corn on the cob for a family get together and everybody raved about it for weeks. Put it on high first thing in the morning and it was ready for a late lunch/early dinner get together A+++

  6. Cooking this today. I presume a lot of fat will end up in the liquid…. do you remove this before shredding?
Is it best to return to the slow cooker to shred or do in a bowl and add the liquid? Thanks

      Hi Matt

You can remove it THIS way 🙂

I like to shred the meat on a cutting board easily then return it to the pot where it will soak up the liquids/sauces in the slow cooker.
If the end is too saucy just serve with a slotted spoon to minimise sauce content 🙂

Yes you can if you prefer
I leave it on myself to cook then it slides off easy before shredding at the end 🙂

  7. Such a versatile recipe and easy too. We use it for nachos, burgers, over baked potatoes. Kids even like it with just salad. We like things a little spicier in our house, so we add a little cayenne pepper to ours.

  8. Made this recently and it was easy, delicious and versatile (we got 2 dinners out of it). Used exactly the same ingredients as in the picture – next time I might try 2 sachets of taco mix as I felt the taco flavour got a little lost in the smoky bbq.

  9. I have made this before and had with slaw and rolls and it is absolutely delicious. This time I added corn, white beans and spinach and served with rice. Just as yummy.
    Thank you. ???

I’d only add an hour extra at most from existing times if using low. If using high it should still be fine as is 🙂

    Melt in your mouth yumminess!
I followed recipe cooked on high for 7.5hr. I cut the pork rind off first before adding to cooker (I made crackling) in oven later..
We had pulled pork sliders with coleslaw. My family (even my fussy husband) raved about the flavour and the pork so tender. A million stars for this recipe!!

  11. I’m not a lover of Pork but my kids like it, so I tried this recipe with the intention of giving it a go…..not only did my house smell amazing while it was cooking, it tasted absolutely delicious!! I’ve now made this a few times. It makes plenty, we’ve had it for left overs and we’ve even given some to friends to take home too!
I tell everyone about this recipe haha

Made this one again – 2nd time around..
Used a 2.3kg piece of pork leg roast from Woolies
I removed the string as per the recipe. I did however cut the pork rind off before adding to SC.
Cooked on low for approx 10.5hr. Served with American coleslaw on a milky bread bun. Extremely delicious – LOVE this recipe ! A favourite of mine now & minimal ingredients – WInning !

I decided to do a test run on this so I could use it for an event. And how good was it? it was amazing! like 4 ingredients, doesn’t get much easier. Ours is being served with coleslaw and bread rolls. I took off the rind so I could dry it out in the fridge and make crackle.

Did this as directed except added 2 x taco mix packets. There’s quite a bit of liquid but just shredded it all together and it’ll soak into the meat.

That’s exactly right Tracey – as per step 8 🙂
Soaks up all that yummy yummy sauce
So glad you enjoyed it too 🙂

I typically avoid recipes like these, as sauces that include the fat juices really make me quite ill. However, a fat separator jug is your friend in a recipe like this! I used a 2.6 kg pork shoulder, 1.5 pkts of the taco seasoning and a full bottle of “Bulls Eye” bbq sauce, a good sprinkle of garlic powder, cooked 3 hrs high and 4 on low. When done, removed the meat carefully with a slide from both ends to take the meat away from the fat/rind layer and poured the juices through the fat separator jug when returning it back to the slow cooker, thickened slightly with a cornflour slurry before adding the meat back to the slow cooker to shred. It was really good, I am so glad I no longer have to avoid recipes like these. (I used a OXO fat separator jug, it removed 1.5 inches of fat in the jug !!)

I prepared this before I went to work and got my son to turn it on. Came home and the smell met me at the front door. OMG it was amazing, served it in bread rolls and with salad will definitely be making this again.

Such a wonderful taste for something so easy to make!
Throw it all in together, turn it on and when you get up next morning, it’s done.
Took it for Mother’s Day lunch and went down a treat as tacos.
Thank you so much Pauline 💓 💗

We put it on Brioche buns with coleslaw for pulled pork burgers. 😋

My pork was close to 3kgs so I used two packets of taco seasoning and forgot to add onions 🫣

Cooked on high for 7 1/2 hours and it fell apart before being able to lift it out of slow cooker to shred so did it in the slow cooker.
    Absolutely delicious 🤤
