Equipment

  • 7L searing slow cooker (If your slow cooker isn't a searing kind, also have a frypan handy)

Ingredients

  • 6 German bratwurst sausages (the pre cooked kind)
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 1 cup Sauerkraut (I use jar type in supermarket jar pickle aisle)
  • 6 hotdog buns
  • Mustard and BBQ/Tomato sauce to serve
  • Optional: Grated tasty cheese

Instructions

  • Add the diced onion to searing slow cooker (or frypan) and cook on high sear/brown setting for10mins until softened.  Remove and set aside.
  • Sear the raw bratwurst sausages in searing slow cooker (or frypan) on high sear/brown setting for10mins until slightly browned.  Remove and set aside.
  • Cut each hotdog roll down the centre to fill.  We don’t butter the rolls but you could if you prefer to.
  • Add one cooked bratwurst to each dog and top with a generous spoonful each of the cooked onion and the sauerkraut to each dog.
  • While cheese isn’t usually added to these kind of hotdogs, half of our family prefer with cheese so we do some with and some without.
  • Place filled hotdogs into slow cooker and cook on HIGH for 1hr using tea towel trick
  • Serve with a drizzle of your preferred sauce and your favourite mustard along each dog.
  • Note: Hotdogs buns will be crunchy not soggy when cooked this way with the tea towel trick 😊
