2 Ingredient Cake 5 0 5 37
  • Prep: 5 mins
  • Cook: 1 hr 30 mins
  • 5 mins

    1 hr 30 mins

    1 hr 35 mins

  • Yields: Variable

1 Packet or Box Cake mix (any flavour you prefer) - I use 320g mix or larger

1 x 425g Can of fruit in juice (any fruit you prefer)

11. Combine the cake mix (dry from the box - no added ingredients to it at all) and the can of fruit (juice included)

32. Pour this into a slow cooker that is greased or lined with baking paper

53. Cover with a tea towel under the lid then cook on HIGH for 1.5 - 2hrs depending on your slow cooker or when skewer comes out clean

7I did mine in my little 1.5L cooker hence the lovely high result but a larger cooker will yield a lower cake

8The cake pictured is a vanilla cake mix and a can of mango slices - you can see the chunks of mango through the finished cake.

9Other great combinations would be chocolate cake and cherries or Vanilla cake and fruit salad.

11It doesn't get much easier than this!

Thanks for the great recipe. Turned out a treat. I only had a tin of pie apples in the pantry and one of the cheap woolies cake mixes. I add some milk to the mixture as the pie apples don’t have any juice, plus a dash of cinnamon. Will be adding this to our caravan recipes.

I made this with vanilla cake mix and a can of crushed pineapple. So very yum.

July 12, 2021

Tried this recipe twice,
First was cafe style chocolate cake with A tin mixed berries

Second was vanilla cake with tinned mango slices.

Both turned out great but the chocolate overpowered the berries more than I thought it would.

The vanilla was well balanced.

Both overall great and so easy!

Was done in exactly 2 hours in a 5.7l cooker.

First attempt at the 2 ingredient cake recipe with tinned apples and Edmonds Butter Cake mix and it was delicious! 2 hrs on high in the 5.7 Ltr SC and it was moist πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ – FIL and MIL had a second helping with yoghurt πŸ₯°

Oh my! I’ve made this a few times now, with variations, and always it’s been a hit! I just use my little Woolworths 1.5 ltr $20 SC. SIMPLE AS,

You can make your own or if you have trouble making it how you like it you can buy tubs of ready made chocolate or butter icing in the cake aisle that is absolutely divine – then you simply spread it on πŸ™‚

May 6, 2021

What icing did you use for the photo? Recipe please, I need all the help I can get!

The 1.5L can sometimes have a hot spot. So during cooking of your cake rotate the inner cooking bowl around occasionally so that hot spot doesn’t stay in the one spot of the cake πŸ™‚

Please help me every time I cook. Cake in my small cooker . I line it and spray it , but it always burns on one side . I use the tea towel

Hi Debbie, was this in a cake tin or straight in? This time is based on a 1.5L slow cooker so a flatter cake in a ‘large’ cooker should cook faster.. however if it’s in a cake tine etc instead that will cause it to cook longer πŸ™‚

Hi first time at this its been in my large slowcooker for 4 hours and still not cooked i have it on high with tea towel cover any one else had the problem

Well another one of these done today – Vanilla & Blueberry. Nice & moist. Didn’t dawn on me that when I mixed Blueberries into mixture I would end up with a ‘Blue’ cake instead of Vanilla. Still tastes good.

January 2, 2021

I just did a box of yellow cake mix and cherry pie filling. Will that work?

I am also not in America or Canada πŸ˜‰
And the size of the can and cake mix is given in the recipe already Katrina?

January 1, 2021

What size can of fruit should you use? (For example with a standard Betty Crocker box cake mix)
I’m not in America or Canada. Approximately how much liquid is needed? I want to have this work. πŸ˜‰

I’m afraid this cake has become a favourite of ours – especially Choc & Cherry. I’m going to have to be careful or I might crack my cooker bowl we use it that much!! I guess it’s worth it in the long run.

I did put this on a couple of days ago but this is just to say Persevere – if it doesn’t work the best first time, try again. I would like to thank the members who put tips on here for us beginners. It is really helpful & encouraging when our recipe comes out how we would expect it to. Excellent work to the whole site.

So easy I really loved this one I used Aldi carrot cake mix and golden circle crushed pineapple, great recipe

August 13, 2020

I made this cake yesterday, I used a packet carrot cake mix and a tin of pineapple pieces. I put mixture in a silicone cake tin and placed it in my 5 litre slow cooker with tea towel under lid cooked cake for 1 1/2 hours on high. Then iced with vanilla icing. It turned out beautifully so moist, delicious πŸ˜‹. I will definitely be making this one again thank you for sharing πŸ₯°

Use any icing you prefer usually or even a pre made frosting if you find that easier πŸ™‚

I recently made this earlier this evening
And used nutella for the middle and also instead of using frosting on top used tsp drops of butter cream frosting for the lava technique
Was a little hesitant at the beginning
But surprisingly it actually came out
Very successful

I used crushed pineapple and a yellow cake mix. They were about to expire. It came out amazing!

Yay, I made a cake. I’ve never been able to bake a cake successfully. I’m wondering if someone who is baker can work out what the dry ingredients are specifically to go with one can of fruit and juice. I figure it would save buying a box cake mix every time. Isn’t the box cake mix just flour and sugar….or perhaps this is why I’ve never been able to make a cake.

That’s right πŸ™‚ Just the box mix and fruit with juice

Toni Clarke

April 17, 2019

Thank you for sharing this brilliant tip!! I am a little puzzled though, so if the box mix requires eggs or other ingredients you do not add these? just the dry cake mix and a can of fruit + it’s juice?

This cake was awesome! First thing I tried in my 1.5L slow cooker. This will be a go to recipe for sure.
It was crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. I was able to put it on before dinner and it was ready for dessert.

You can do either πŸ™‚
Here’s INFO on how

Do you put the cake mixture mixed with the fruit straight into the slow cooker or do you all put it in a cake tin sitting on a trivit?

January 8, 2019

Would I be able to do this in a crockpot express? It has a slowcooker button and two heat settings.

December 22, 2018

I am going to be making a chocolate, and black cherry one on Monday for Christmas day on Tuesday.

November 13, 2018

Love this cake. Made it today
Will make it a regular thing, great to take to friends houses to.

September 11, 2018

Made this with my toddler as I knew he might need a treat after getting needles this morning. We used a vanilla cake and a tin of mango, put it on before the appointment and came back to a perfectly cooked cake. He’s now happily devouring a piece. 😊

September 2, 2018

Love this cake! Make it once or twice a week depending on how quick my family devour it! Great that you can mix up the different fruits etc for a new cake each time!

Wow what an amazing cake, I used the buttercake and sliced apples but had to add an egg because not enough juice in the tin and sprinkled cinnamon sugar on top when cooked and it was so delicious πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹

August 3, 2018

Made this last night with a butter cake mix and apricots and was very moist and tasty. Will be making again and next time try the choc cherry version

Sure it will πŸ™‚

June 16, 2018

This was so delicious constructed it a different way, was like a peach cobbler. Tinned peaches big tin on the bottom straight into slow cooker, cake mix straight out of packet sprinkled over peaches few dobs of butter on the top, cooked about 3, or 4 hours, sprinkled cinnamon and vanilla sugar on the top cinnamon helped with the colouring, I used. Butter cake but have used vanilla cake

Hi Rebecca
Sure you can
If they are oven proof then they’ll be slow cooker proof πŸ™‚

January 9, 2018

Instead of using baking paper could I just pop in a large paper cake liner so there’s no mess. Sorry if I sound dumb but first time sc baker lol

November 27, 2017

Amazing.. Just under 2 hrs cooking time.
Vanilla cake mix with a can of pineapple chunks… I’m impressed…

November 20, 2017

Sure you could carefully invert your bowl
I line mine with baking paper then lift it out by that πŸ™‚

November 19, 2017

I just made this with a spice cake mix and a 20 oz can of unsweetened pineapple because the oven is broken. It is delicious! The knife came out clean after one hour and ten minutes so I stopped cooking. Can you turn the crock pot upside down and get the cake out?

August 20, 2017

Mine is cooking now: yellow vanilla cake mix and tin of mandarins. The tin was small so I added a small container of no sugar applesauce (the kind for school lunches). I’m getting excited. I’ll test for donness at the 2 hour mark. Slurrrp.

August 5, 2017

OMG yummy and so easy, animal cake with mango

what was the size of the cherries can and cake mix please?
Maybe the balance was out?
Sounds like too much liquid.
What size cooker and what sort of cake tin please
Maybe we can help you work it out πŸ™‚

I made last night the chocolate and cherries and it was a disaster i put water in the base of my cooker and tea towel and 2hrs later wasn’t cooked easy recipes have made harder recipes and no problem i can’t work out what went wrong had to throw it out it felt like it was too moist

I made this today with carrot cake mix and a tin of fruit salad pieces. I used a 5L slow cooker with tea towel under lid.
Cooked for 1hr 40mins on high. Vanilla icing when cooled . Thoroughly delicious, will definitely make again trying some different combinations.

I made this again the other day and it was beautiful. Vanilla cake with fruit salad mixed through. It was so moist and everyone that tried it loved it, infact I’ve emailed this recipe to a few people now who are all just as impressed as I am.

July 19, 2017

Thanks for the reply. Only just saw it as I was expecting a notification. I ended up doing it in the slower cooker using pie apple (2/3 can). There was no liquid so I made up some syrup with sugar and water. It was delicious, especially warm. Would loved to have had some ice cream with it.

I was very sceptical at first, but this recipe is fantastic. Can’t wait to try all sorts of different combinations.

Sonya Cavanough

July 10, 2017

This was as easy as the name suggests. I used a cheap brand cake mix with 420g canned fruit salad in syrup and put it on high for 1.5hrs, was fluffy & so yummy. Will definitely be making it again but maybe with the juice instead of fruit pieces for the kids fussiness lol

I would go 1.5 tins
In a loaf tin check it in half hr intervals after the 1hr mark I’d say πŸ™‚
Don’t worry too much about the heat issue… I’m a constant lid lifter/checker and it doesn’t affect my recipes πŸ™‚

July 8, 2017

My packet mix is 470 grams and the fruit I bought only came in 310g tins. Can I use all of both tins or should I use 1 1/2.

I want to use loaf tins in my slow cooker. Any idea how long to cook for? If I keep lifting the lid to see if it’s cooked I’ll lose all the heat.

New to slow cooking and not the best cook at the best of times!

June 12, 2017

I made this today using a Chocolate cake mix and Black Cherries. It was so incredibly easy to make, I cooked mine in a 5L SC but had the mix in a cake tin so as to still get the height of the cake. It was really lovely, apart from my mistake of the Cherries I bought and possibly I should’ve let it cook a tad longer. I will be making this again though with a different cake mix and fruit. Thanks for such a great recipe that is almost foolproof (apart from me…lol). Love it!

June 8, 2016

Currently making this with a vanilla Coles cake mix and Coles canned fruit salad and added dollops of Nutella and swirled ? So looking forward to it

May 14, 2016

Made this today with lemon cake mix and pineapple chunks in syrup. Soooo tasty and beautifully moist! Can’t wait to try different flavours!!!

Did you rotate your inner pot (if round) during cooking?
Sounds like yours may cook hot.
You could also cook it in a cake tin or silicone tin etc sitting on eg a trivet in your slow cooker to get it away from the hot sides etc

I tried this today with a tin of crushed pineapple. It came out really stodgy, as though it wasn’t cooked properly but it was starting to burn on the outside. I’m not doing very well with puddings. πŸ™

April 27, 2016

The cherry cake came out superbly! But a hint- I now double to glad-bake paper in strips, and then put an extra circular paper on the bottom, over the strips to stop burning.
Now, the tea-towel takes up the moisture off the top of the cake as it is cooking. Without which it would leave it wet on top.

April 27, 2016

can anyone tell me what does the tea towel do please.

Victoria Conlan

April 17, 2016

Attempting this just now with tin of peach slices(410g) and a packet of vanilla cake mix (400g), wish me luck πŸ™‚

There may be something wrong with your slow cooker?
5.5 being such a large cooker should have been done even faster than normal not sooo much longer?

March 25, 2016

Used this in a 5.5L slow cooker. Needed to be on high for 4 hours

January 22, 2016

Got my little surprize in the 1.5 L cooker.! Have choc cake mix, added an egg ( don’t need to though) and 1/2 bottle of pitted cherries.
Waiting in anticipation…….

That’s correct πŸ™‚

January 17, 2016

no egg no water nothing added ?

January 11, 2016

Made this delicious cake 2 nights in a row. Last night i used 440gm coles chocolate cake mix with 425gm can of pitted black cherries served with vanilla ice cream. Tonight i used same cake mix with 425gm of mixed berries served with thick dollop cream. Extremely moist cake. My 19yr old daughter normally wont eat cake but has now requested to have this for dessert every night πŸ™‚
