Serving: 6
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 6 hours
Total Time 6 hours 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • Roast beef (blade or topside) up to 2kg
  • 1 large onion
  • 1.5 tbsp bottle mustard (I used mild American style in a squeeze bottle)
  • 1 sachet of instant roast meat gravy powder (usually makes up to 1 cup of gravy when mixed)

Spice rub

  • 1/2 tsp pink Himalayan salt
  • 1/2 tsp cracked black pepper
  • 1.5 tsp smoked paprika
  • 3/4 tsp of garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp of cumin
  • NO LIQUID ADDED

Instructions

  • Place roast in slow cooker and pierce some holes all over the top surface of it with a sharp knife
  • Cut large onion into quarters and place around the roast in the base of the slow cooker
  • Combine rub ingredients and rub onto and into the surface of the roast beef
  • Squirt the mustard across the top of the roast
  • Cook on high for 4hrs then low for 2hrs (or Auto for 7hrs or low for 8hrs)
  • When cooked, using a slotted spoon remove the onion and discard
  • Remove roast beef from slow cooker and rest it while you make the gravy
  • To make gravy add the gravy powder sachet (dry, no water added) to the cooking juices and whisk to combine well then turn to HIGH
  • While carving your meat and plating up your meals have the slow cooker cook on HIGH to thicken your gravy nicely (you could do this on a stove top also if you prefer to do it faster but ours thickened nicely in slow cooker in around 10-15mins)

  1. This was absolutely delicious. Has been requested to add to the roster. We had four hungry adults and two even hungrier toddlers and there was still leftovers. The best part is making the gravy right there in the dish, no extra pots to clean! Thanks for sharing ?

  2. This was absolutely beautiful! I think my slow cooker is a little hotter than others so next time I won’t cook it as long. I substituted the garlic powder for garlic salt and omitted the pink salt. I think next time I’ll try a pepper gravy! This was the first time I’ve slow cooked a roast and I’ll happily do this from now on! Thank you for creating a delicious dish! ????

  3. This was absolutely incredible! I omitted the salt and used garlic salt instead. It was definitely a hit and I will slow cook all my roasts from now on! Thank you for creating such a delicious dish!! ????

  4. This is amazing, so flavoursome & the meat was so tender, absolutely beautiful. Thank you for this incredible recipe.

  5. Great recipe used garlic salt instead of powder and also added whole grain mustard seeds but used a little less of the bottled mustard. Made the leftover meat into pies I think the pies were more of a winner than the roast

  6. Absolutely Delicious. At the request of my partner when I make this tomorrow it will have smoky BBQ sauce instead of Mustard… I can’t wait to see how it goes!

  7. Made this with a 1.1kg topside roast with no fat on it. Cooked for 8 hours on low and it was quite dry. Have made it before with a bigger piece of meat and it was perfect so if making with a smaller roast, I’d reduce the cooking time. Gravy and spice flavours were delicious!

  8. Absolutely fantastic! I used twice as much american mustard as we love it so much. Juices made for a very interesting delicious gravy. Definitely making this again.

  9. Think my S/C cooks too hot ’cause my 1.8kg piece of topside came out so dry! However, once we’d poured the yummy gravy over it, that saved the dish. Am going to try this again with a piece of blade.

  10. Im not normally a big fan of roast beef but this was delicious! I had to tweak a couple of things as I didn’t have all the ingredients but it was very tasty!

  11. This is an outstanding Roast. Don’t let the ingredients put you off. Kids loved it, hubby loved it. Even the 12 mnth had a try.
    Absolutely easy and stunning!!!

  12. AMAZING! The best roast beef we’ve eaten and the gravy was delicious. Will definitely be making this again.

  13. This was a winner in my house. My boys are sold are on 1-2-3 Roast beef but they enjoyed this too, with oven roasted vegies. I gave too much cooking time (8 hr low) to the 1.7kg topside so it came out a little dry, but this wasn’t a problem with the magnificent gravy that this dish produces. I look forward to doing it again soon.

  14. Undeniably this has to be the BEST roast beef I’ve ever had in my entire life ?? Paulene Christie you are a true genious for creating this absolutely delectable roast beef recipe! 10/10 for the beef ? And the gravy… OMG it totally deserves its own individual score of 10/10, it is just sooooo good ? Only changes I made to the recipe were adding some onion powder and a crushed beef stock cube to the spice rub and I didn’t bother measuring the mustard, I just squeezed it on the beef and used a knife to spread it all over the roast before adding the spice rub. NOTE : I followed the method in SCC Kids page 160 that states to add mustard and then the spice rub as this helps keep the spices on the beef as it’s cooking ? Love, love, love this recipe so much so that we’ve enjoyed it twice in the past 2 weeks already… A complete dinner winner ?

  15. Absolutely delicious and so easy! I did 8 hours low on a blade roast and the meat fell apart when I carved it. Because it fell apart I thought it was easier to throw it back in the slow cooker and mix the meat through the gravy rather than put the gravy on later. Turned out to be a good choice and with roast potatoes and veggies it was a thumbs up from my boys

  16. Loved this! I did 8 hrs on low but as I had a 1.7kg piece I turned off early and it was perfect. My children loved it and that includes the 1 year old as was a perfect texture for him. I will add a little more mustard next time as I was lenient due to the children but I think it would be fine with more. Look forward to doing it again!

  17. Alison Armstrong

Not good, followed recipe exactly but end result was dry, stringy meat, flavour was nice, but meat disappointing. Not a keeper

  18. We had this tonight and it was amazing. I used a 1.3kg Top Side and cooked it low for 6 hours. I also used whole seed mustard instead of American. Everyone loved it

  19. Tried a this one again and reduced cooking time to 6 hours on low, 8 hours was too long last time and the meat dried out. Turned out great this time, thanks.

  20. I never have much luck with Roast Beef but this was bloody beautiful. Thanks again for all your amazing recipes. ?☺?

  21. This recipe was so easy and tasted amazing. Roast beef isn’t really my thing and i often avoided it. From now on it’ll be a regular meal. I had 1.2kg roast and cooked it just under 6hrs on low.
