Serving: 2
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 1 hour 20 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 500g diced chicken thigh
  • 110g block of French Onion Cream Cheese (I used White Valley brand) - see notes below in method
  • 200ml cooking cream
  • 60g baby spinach leaves

Instructions

  • Brown/sear diced chicken well in searing slow cooker or pan
  • Add cream cheese and stir for 2-3mins as it melts to coat chicken with it
  • Add cooking cream and stir
  • Cover and use The Tea Towel Trick
  • Cook on HIGH for a further 1hr 15mins
  • Add spinach and stir through until wilted

Notes

  • If you cannot source the French Onion flavoured cream cheese you could use regular Philadelphia cream cheese and mix with 20g French Onion soup mix
  • The cooking cream is important as it resists splitting like normal cream. I like the Bulla brand myself
  • Inspired by the recipe "Chicken with Semi-Dried Tomato & Spinach – LOW CARB"

Alternate versions

  • This recipe can be easily changed simply by changing the flavour of the cream cheese. For example I now love a sweet chilli version that I make the same but just change the French onion creamed cheese to a sweet chilli flavoured cream cheese block instead ?
  • If you can't find sweet chilli cream then add 1/2 cup of sweet chilli sauce to your regular creamed cheese
  • You could also try the Chive and Onion cream cheese flavour or the Apricot Cream Cheese
  • I've also replaced the baby spinach with semi dried tomatoes for another yummy version

  1. I trialed this today with chicken pieces (chicken maryland and chicken thigh fillets)
I cooked them for about 1.5hrs first just by themselves then drained out the cooking liquids that produced, before returning them to the slow cooker and adding in the cream and cream cheese etc 🙂
Cooked with tea towel in place so the water didn’t drip into the creamy sauce.
    They were beautiful!

  2. What’s the tea towel trick? And I’m in South Africa so we don’t have the Bulla brand. Any other way you can explain this creams consistency etc

Delicious and so easy. Also surprisingly quick for a ‘slow cooked’ meal. I couldn’t find any French onion cream cheese so used the alternate method. It was quite rich so with rice and steamed veggies I think it could stretch to 3-4 serves. Will definitely do this one again.

  4. I made this for guests, was a huge success, they loved it, my family loved it, a regular on our menu now.

  5. this was totally amazing so easy toale an so tasty a definite new favourite in my house hubby even had seconds

  6. This was truly amazing I doubled the recipe and used breast instead of thigh I also couldn’t find French Onion cheese so I used French Onion soup mix 1 packet and cooked on low for 2 hours it’s sensational

  7. Oh my goodness this is truly amazing I doubled the recipe and used chicken breast instead of thigh I also couldn’t find French Onion cream cheese so I used 1 packet of French Onion soup and mixed it with the cooking cream I also cooked on low for 2 hours and served with rice will definitely be on my weekly rotation

  8. I made this today, so easy and convenient going into the supermarket for so few items. My 2 year old who usually throws his food and carries on is sitting quietly devouring his.
I added extra cooking cream, two garlic cloves crushed, and 150g of mushroom

  9. Theresa Gerrard

Cooked this tonight and loved it! Kept to the recipe for the first time but also added some sundried tomatoes. Wasn’t able to use the tea towel with the type of cooker I have and still worked fine. Definite keeper

  10. I just made it & it was very much a Comfort meal. Not sure what the fat content is for this but how could I make it healthier?

  11. My new favourite slow cooker recipe! And low carb to boot! Thank you

I added two small cloves of garlic, cooked and chopped bacon and added quartered mid size mushrooms (whole button mushrooms would be lovely in this) and it was heaven on top of cauliflower rice.

I’ll be making this again right away 🙂

  12. Made this tonight and was so good! I added bacon, and spring onion, and served with rice. I used a block of cream cheese and added the French onion soup. Although it was good it tasted very salty. Not sure why??

    1. The alteration to the soup powder would affect the salt from the original… but also the addition of bacon will significantly increase salt also. Try less soup powder next time if you want to keep the bacon in and that should help 🙂

  13. This is an amazing recipe such a hit in my house hold. I use the Philadelphia cream for cooking and the packet French onion soup and add bacon. So incredibly good thanks for Sharing this. Yum

  14. Kristen Marson

Loved this one. I’ve even made one with different variations. A bit of vegetable stock instead of the soup mix, with bacon & onion. It was really good. Fussy partner liked it too!

  15. I can’t begin to explain HOW AMAZING this dish is!! Freezes well too.
I added in mushrooms (like 8 large ones as I doubled the mixture) and also served with beans. YUM!

  16. Hi- might seem like a silly question.. but if I doubled the chicken- should I double the cream cheese and cream?

  17. Hi I’m making this tonight and I also added garlic and sun dried tomatoes, smells delicious. My question is “what do you use as a side dish with it?”? Thanks

  18. I love this. I’ve made it quite a few times now. I add diced bacon, mushrooms and a red onion and serve with fettuccine pasta. Amazing! And then use the leftovers to make pies (as per partners request every time!) a real winner in my house.

  19. Hi ladies, I’m in the UK and I’m struggling to find out what cooking cream is, can anyone give me some ideas please?? Many thanks xx

  20. Hello
This looks and sounds delicious but just wondering if it could be cooked on low throughout the day and what is the tea towel trick please?
    Thank you.

  21. Hi, I’ve made this a few weeks ago with Philly cream cheese and a packet of French onion soup and now would like to try the Version of sweet chilli Philly so do I need to still add the French onion soup? Thanks

  22. If you used breast instead of thigh would you still need to cut it into pieces or could you put the breasts in whole? Thanks

  23. This was very, very nice. I couldn’t find the white valley brand,so used Philly and French onion soup mix. Went heavy on the cream, didn’t want to save the extra in the 300ml tub. Was a really good meal with fettuccine.

  24. Made this the other night, it was delicous. Added garlic and bacon aswell. Everyone loved it, hubby miss 6,5 and 2…… Increased the ammount of spinach aswell.

  25. Could you just add sweet chilli sauce if you don’t have sweet chilli philly?
And could I slow cook the chicken during the day then add the cream cheese sauce at the end?
    Thank you

  26. Delicious. I made this for dinner tonight and added a heaped tablespoon of chilli, garlic and ginger sauce. Whole family loved it.

  27. I used 1kg chicken, spring onion n chive cheese, 300 cooking cream nearly 120g packet of spinich leaves, about 4 rashes short loin bacon, fried and drained first, plus added few slithered almonds. Delicious. Wow what a great receipe, will experiment with other cheese flavours next time.

  28. This was lovely, I followed recipe but used lactose free cream cheese, lactose free cream and the half a packet of French onion soup mix. I served it with fresh egg pasta. My 10 month old wanted seconds both times I’ve given it to her. Thank you for this recipe.

  29. For those of you that couldn’t find the white valley cream cheese and used soup mix and cream cheese how much did you use? 250gm block of cream cheese and full packet of soup mix? Or less? Thanks in advanced!!!

My hubby made the sweet chilli version lastnight, it was soooo yummy!!! He added some carrot and garlic along with the spinach and served with pasta. Next time we will add in onion capsicum and maybe sundried tomato. Will definitely make again so yummy, easy and quick

  31. This really is the bomb of a meal with the sweet chilli version. Seriously amazing. We have this at least once a week twice if we can. I add spring onion 3/4 cup cooked from beginning with rest of ingredients but I also garnish with fresh spring onion and it adds that awesome crunch. So Devine.

  32. Loved this recipe! So simple but delicious!.

Could not find the french onion cream cheese so used regular cream cheese and french onion soup mix as suggested.

I also added 3 pieces of short cut bacon and 150 gram of mushroom which i cooked in a pan before adding to the slowcooker. I also doubled the amount of spinach and added lots of pepper, but that’s just personal preference.

  33. Veronica Bontorno

I made this over the weekend for the first time. Hubby and i loved it, however found it very rich. Mixing it with pasta/fettechini worked well, but need to thin it out a little. I doubled thr recipe and used aldi cream cheese with a packet of french onion soup mix. Will definitely make it again with some alterations 🙂

  34. Everyone do yourself a favour and make this! By far the best SC dish i think i have ever made!

I used 1kg of chicken drummies, 300ml-ish cream (just tipped the bottle and guessed) and french onion soup mix with the cream cheese, cooked on low 4hours and it was perfect!

Thank you for a new family favourite!

  35. Can someone tell me what I’m doing wrong. We all love this but putting it in the slow cooked the chicken really dries out. I’ve tried not browning it for long like 1 min if that and then only slow cooking for an hour. Even 45 minutes last time. I used thickened cream cause I don’t know what cooking cream is. Could that be it?

  36. i have done this dish so many times and keep on forgetting to put a review up.. I didn’t have the sweet chilli cream cheese which I love so I made it with the French onion soup mix and Philli cheese I double the recipe and added capsicum , peas , corn and carrots in last 40 mins was so delicious I served it with rice next time I’ll do pasta or mash potato not really low carb but it’s a lovely dish

  37. Just love this recipe. Tried it for the first time tonight and there is nothing left. I have a very fussy eater and she tucked into it and even had more. Thank you. I am going to try some of the suggestions everyone has shared.

  38. I wanted to make the sweet chilli version as I feel I use french onion flavour for a lot of dishes. I could only find plain cream cheese in Woolies, but found Bulla brand sweet chilli cottage cheese. I used that with a bit of plain cream cheese for the fat. I added onion, red capsicum and mushrooms, and served on spaghetti (in my pantry it was either that or brown basmanti rice). I really enjoyed it. The sweet chilli taste was subtle, but really good. I’ll definitely make again. I’ll go search for the sweet chilli cream cheese, otherwise I’ll use the cottage cheese again 🙂

I was going to do this for the first time the other night, but it would have meant leaving the meat etc in the slow cooker, on the bench, for most of the day while I was at work (I use a timer) and I was quite hesitant to do that with chicken. So, I’m sorry , I cheated. I used my microwave. And it was the best ever! My fussy fussy 5yr old granddaughter told me I was the BEST cook! My husband, son and other grandies demolished it. Licked the pot clean and were looking for more. I will definitely be doing it in the slow cooker but it is good to know it adapts so beautifully to the microwave.

  40. This is fantastic I made it with sweet chilli cream cheese so easy, even my 8 year old son loved it will be making the again for sure

  41. Ok, so I wanted to use coconut cream and did not have some most of the other ingredients. However my version was lovely and I need to try the original as well. Swapped in about 1/2 cup sliced sun dried tomatoes, one sliced leek, three finely sliced garlic cloves, coconut cream, 1 tablespoon each of cream cheese and Greek yoghurt. Used 1/2 cup of white wine to clean out the frying pan after browning chicken. No spinach. Great recipe that can be modified easily with what you have to hand I think. I also like that it is so quick.

  42. Belinda Coughlan

I’ve made this twice now in the past month. First time I followed the recipe exactly. Second time changed to breast (as that’s the family favourite). We like a bit of extra sauce so I put the full tub of cream in and also the full packet of French Onion Soup. A family favourite now, especially that it can be so easily modified to suit tastes.

  43. I make something similar (on the stove) with chicken thighs, cream cheese, and a jar of roast capsicum salsa. That could also be cooking in this way, I imagine.

  44. Im wanting to do the sweet chilli version can i just add sweet chilli sauce ? If yes how much? I have the plain cream cheese but cant find the sweet chilli one help meeee please lol …

  45. Love, love loved this recipe.
I added sundried tomato, bacon and a little garlic it was so good.
I froze the leftovers and even that was just as good if not better.
Going to try the sweet chilli cheese tomorrow ??
Thank you slow cooker central for all ypur amazing recipes. ??

  46. So quick to prepare and sooooo delicious! I added some bacon and capsicum, frying it off when borwniong the chicken. I also added some shallots & button mushrooms with the spinach.
As a relatively inexperienced cook, this was so easy and so tasty, made me feel like quite the professional!
    A keeper recipe for sure!

I’d delayed cooking this as I thought anything so easy sounding must have some “trick” to it that I won’t be able to achieve. Even though I’d read the recipe multiple times, the same fear of something going wrong kept entering my head but last night I made it and it certainly won’t be the last time either! It was delicious, honestly nicer than I could ever dream it would be. There were no hidden unachievable “tricks” or methods just the right 4 ingredients to achieve a magical meal. This has now superseded all other recipes to become our number 1 favourite, thank you.

  48. The first time I made this recipe I used chicken breast and reduced the slow cooker time to one hour. It tasted so yummy, but I thought it needed a little more “oomph”, so I modified the recipe to suit my taste.

I used one block of Philly cream cheese and a 35g packet of salt-reduced French Onion soup mix.
When I was browning the chicken I added a small diced onion and two teaspoons of chopped garlic.
I added one cup of halved mushrooms to the slow cooker pot with the chicken.
I doubled the cooking cream to make extra sauce.

It was so delicious. Definitely a make again recipe.

  49. Hi all! Thank you for inspiring me to make this devine meal – French Cream Chicken.
    It was so delish!

Next time I will make a double batch and add white wine and toasted pine nuts for a bit of decadence. I also added sundried tomatoes and served it with pasta and parmesan cheese which was yummy. ????

  50. Made a double batch of this last night, doubled all ingredience and added sundried tomatoes, bacon and onion. served on a bed of rice. Absolutly Amazing. The man who lives at my house loved it. Will most definatly be making this again.

  51. One of my favourites. I used a while block of phillidelphia cheese and a packet of French onion soup mix. I also added 100g spinach, half a jar of sun dried tomatoes and mushrooms. So good!

  52. Loved everything about this dish. It looked and tasted like I put a lot of effort in but it was so easy…shhh…my little secret from the fam.

  53. Has this tonight awesome , served with roast vegetables and broccoli, I doubled the recipe and used home brand cream cheese and French onion soup mix , cooking cream comes in 300 ml so added 100ml off water .
I am currently cooking angel hair pasta to go with left overs for lunches .

  54. I used the almond and apricot cream cheese plus 20gr french onion soup powder. Worked well, I also cooked 2 bunches of asparagus in it as well. Served it with some boiled potato and carrots. Absolute winner.

I used 4 chicken thigh fillets cut into 4 – that along with the extra vegetables served my husband and I 2 dinners….

  55. A great alternate is a Mexican version with fajita mix (1 sachet) and a can of corn kernels, use plain cream cheese and swap the spinach for the corn. Serve with rice. Delicious!

  56. I done this and made it into a baked potato!
Oh my yum! I used breast not thigh.
Didnt put spinach in but added bacon, shallots and of course garlic! Was delicious ??

  57. Cooked this for my very first slow cooker meal.
Added mushrooms as well & it was absolutely lovely!
Definitely going to be trying this again with the sweet chilli version.

But if you’re not a confident cook this is a great starting point!

  58. We loved this! I was worried it was going to be really rich, so i added a very small amount of fresh chopped cherry tomatoes on top at serving. It wasnt super rich and the tomato was a lovely little burst of extra flavour

  59. A Beautiful and simple dish!
Highly recommended. I did the sweet chilli philly, mushrooms and baby spinach. I’m looking forward to trying different flavors
    ?? ???????? Stars!

  60. Great recipe tried this the other day so much flavour for so little time in the slow cooker. I added garlic and mushrooms – next time I’ll try adding bacon. Definitely will be a regular recipe for our family.

  61. my family absolutely love this recipe we have it at least twice a month. I have a very fussy daughter that usually is not willing to try anything but when she smelt this omg she wanoted it including the spinach haha. love it have recommended it to family and friends as well ?

  62. Oh my god. So good I had to type that cos the acronym wouldn’t do it justice. Had to use sweet chilli Philly and added 2 teaspoons of sun-dried tomatoes. What flavour!!!! I’m not sure if any of the leftovers will make it to the freezer

  63. Oh my lordy lord! This was so beautiful! I read the recipe wrong and didn’t have the cooking cream so I substituted it for cream of mushroom soup. I also added garlic and lots of mushrooms! Served on a bed of rice, this was so delicious! Keen to follow the recipe correctly next time (lol) & give the sweet chilli version a go!

  64. Did this for the first time tonight using the Chilli Philli Cheese. Reduced the recipe for 2 of us. Wished I’d tried it sooner, so tasty & didn’t feel ‘heavy’. Served wth tagliatelle & husband licked the plates!

  65. I am wanting to make this. Just wanted to know if I cook it can I leave it on warm for a few hour until we are all home?
    Or will the cream split?

  66. Darrelle Townsend

Made this tonight, although it was rich, thoroughly enjoyed it, served on a bed of Fettuccine. I doubled the amount of chicken thighs added 250 grams of sun dried tomatoe strips and added 200 grams of baby spinach, (more than double the recommended amount), I used 2 packets of Philli cheese and a 250 gram tin of Nestle Reduced Fat Cream, (I find this cream does not separate and is always handy to have a tin in the cupboard), one packet of French Onion Soup mix, I used water to thin the sauce. As soon as I tasted it, I wished that I had some mushrooms, I think it would add to the delicious flavour, I may even try some garlic too. Next time I may use a tin of mushroom soup, instead of the cream, it may just lower the richness.

  67. Sharni Krygger

    This was amazing!
I created the sweet chilli version by adding 1cup of sweet chilli sauce instead of the soup mix.
I was at work today so i cooked it on low for 4 hours without the tea towel and added flour to the sauce when i arrived home to thicken. I served it with linguine pasta. Amazing!

  68. I made this last night – yum! I added bacon, mushrooms and julienne’d carrots. I browned the bacon, mushrooms and seared the chicken before adding it to the slow cooker, but with the carrot I just added it to the mix. The carrot was perfect at finish time – a little bit crisp but still cooked. Definitely going to add this to the regular rotation of meals for the family!

  69. Oh My…… How delicious, my hubby has to watch his cholesterol, so I used creme fresh instead of cream, and because we love mushrooms I fried about half a punnet in coconut oil and added them in about half an hour from the end, and I used frozen spinach, added at the same time as the mushrooms. So quick for a SC meal, but delicious!

  70. Coral Hastings

    Absolutely YUMMY!!!
I used diced breast fillets, cream cheese and the whole 300ml bottle of cream. Only had ½ a packet of French onion soup (left over from something else…..?) but it was enough. Forgot to buy baby spinach leaves but hey.
Served with whole meal couscous and steamed veggies.
My 6 year old daughters had seconds, I had leftovers for lunch but poor hubby thought it was too creamy….. he is not a big fan of cream sauces. Oh well he will have to get used to this one as I will definitely be making again!!!

  71. Oh my gosh!!! Why have i not tried this earlier ? I made a sweet chilli version without the spinach but added frozen veges & served with rice!!! amazingly creamy & perfect sauce!!! I’ve made enough to freeze leftovers to have another night & I’ll be definitely trying the french onion version soon!!! Thank you to OP amazing meal!!!!!

  72. Loved it. Added bacon and doubled the cream cheese and French onion soup for extra sauce. Next time I’ll try the sweet chilli version. ??

  73. Tried this last night. Very tasty, I altered the recipe a bit to my liking and to use up some ingredients I had left over.
    This is my recipe:
    500g diced chicken
100g of cream cheese mixed with half a pack of French onion soup mix
Half tin of cream of mushroom soup
4 tbsp sun-dried tomatoes, chopped and added near the end of cooking time.

  74. My husband cooked this tonight for us and we absolutely loved it. Very simple to cook and tasted amazing. We normally don’t each spinach but thought we’d give it a try and I can say I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought the spinach was nice. We had it with rice but we will try with pasta next time as well. One of our new favourites.

  75. Yum. Added some red onion and sun dried tomatoes popped it with some fried rice very easy yummy meal enough for 2 adults and small child

  76. We tried this for last night’s dinner and loved it! The only change I made was using 100g herb and garlic cream cheese (South Cape) instead of French onion. But my head is full of other variations to try!

  77. Made this tonight with sweet chilli cream cheese and had on fettuccine. One of our new favourites it was soooo good!

  78. OMG.. this is devine….. even my fussiest eater liked it and asked when can we have it again !!! Next time I will add a bit extra french onion soup mix to give a little more flavour but it was absolutely delicious

  79. This is absolutely delicious! Clean plates all around when I make this, including the kids! I throw steamed fresh green beans in at the end and serve with broccoli, carrots and warm dinner rolls. Perfect!!

  80. Hi Paulene. Could you please provide the cooking time for doubling the recipe to use 1 kg of diced chicken thighs? I made this successfully the first time, then doubled it last night and after 1 hr 40 mins most of it was still raw. (Hungry family needed to eat so I had to abandon the SC and use the stove.) The cooker still felt very hot so I think it was heating correctly. I tried asking on the FB page last night but people had varied answers re cooking time and comments were turned off so I couldn’t ask follow up questions or get a satisfactory answer. Hope you can help as this is a great recipe, but needs to serve more than 2 people for our household.

  81. Hi Paulene. Thanks for your response. No, I didn’t sear/brown the chicken first. Others have said it’s ok to do it without that step. I didn’t sear it either time – the successful normal recipe or the unsuccessful doubled attempt. Cooking time for single recipe was fine without searing. Hope you can help.

    1. Although I always sear for this one (and that’s what cooking times listed are based on) some do not. However doubling the amount of chicken and not searing would certainly affect that time. If browned the extra volume of chicken isn’t a big change to the required cooking time but if you choose not to I expect the cooking time would be much closer to 2.5-3hrs at least just to cook through that amount of chicken from raw 🙂
I’ve not done so myself but this is what I would estimate 🙂

  82. Tried this today and changed it slightly by adding paprika and using philly herb dip as I couldn’t find the french onion soup mix one, as well as adding some french onion soup mix and philly cream for cooking.
The whole family loved it. This is definitely going to be added to my repertoire.

  83. I made this with 5 whole chicken thighs which I browned, plus a sliced onion browned. Then a tub of Philly herb and garlic spread, half a packet of French onion soup, 200 mls of pouring cream, some black pepper and at the last baby spinach leaves. 2 hours in slow cooker on high with tea towel. Served it over macaroni with garlic bread on the side. Hubbys response – absolutely beautiful! This ones a keeper!
Absolutely delicious and so easy. I made it after work and it was ready for tea. 2 hours!

  84. This is an amazing dish Paulene!!!Absolutely loved it ? I’ve made this a few times now n so far I think my fave version is made with the apricot n almond cream cheese OMG sooooooo delicious ?? sweet chilli ? is nice too ?? I love how there’s only a few ingredients n doesn’t take long to cook n it’s absolutely creamy scrumptiouslicious ? thank you again for this amazing recipe Paulene nom nom nom ??
    ?? ?? ??????????????????????

  85. Made this with a sweet chilli cheese, added a sliced onion and capsicum. Just before serving I added some peas and corn that I had zapped in the microwave 1st. Served with rice and some broccoli.
Absolutely delicious. It was a quick easy recipe and cooked in about an hour in my cooker. Hubby has asked for this one again so must be good. I love that using the basic recipe you can change it up by using different favours of cheese and other veggie additions. Will be experimenting more with this one.

  86. I made this today and it was absolutely delish.
I used 1kg of chicken thighs I also added 1 can of condensed cream of chicken soup, mushrooms. I did the spring onion and chive version. I also added pasta to it about 30 mins before serving to cook in the creamy juices… yummy!!!!

  87. very nice meal
I used 1kg of chicken thighs I also added 1 can of condensed cream of chicken soup, mushrooms. I did the spring onion and chive version. I also added pasta to it about 30 mins before serving to cook in the creamy juices… yummy!!!!

  88. I have a Breville fast slow cooker which I can’t use the tea towel trick – how long would you suggest I slow cook it for in this instance, and could I put the pasta in as well to cook? Thanks!

  89. Had this for the first time tonight and added some onions and bacon pieces to it. Absolutely beautiful! Rich and creamy!

  90. Caroline Manwaring

Another great recipe Pauline. So tasty and versatile with a number of options to change it up to suit different tastes. Second recipe tried, second review left and a recipe that I’ll try again with suggested different flavours. Thank you so much for sharing your delicious recipes, it’s very much appreciated.

  91. Hi. Wanting to make this for a party. If I use 2 kg of thighs, can I put them in raw & for how long or should I sear it then how long in the slow cooker? Thanks

  92. Rachelle Henderson

ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! I doubled the recipe and served with mash and veggies.
I will be doing it x4 next time so we will hopefully have some leftover for lunches the next day.
Massive hit with the 6 of us.

  93. I’ve made this before, using the sweet chilli, but tonight I made it with FRENCH ONION, season .. & again, OMG ? it turned out so good, so creamy & just yum!!! ? Thanks again for sharing!!

  94. Creamy & decadent meal served with rice.
Modified recipe slightly: used 250g Aldi cream cheese block 1kg thighs 1p dry French onion soup mix salt reduced 300ml Bulla cooking cream one whole bunch English spinach, cook on high 2hrs ? delish ?

  95. I made this using 1/2cup honey seeded mustard and a bit extra honey for taste, instead of french onion soup. I added bacon pieces. Turned out delicious

  96. I couldn’t find the French Onion Philly, so I added 1/ 2 pk French onion soup to philly cheese and it worked a treat… I also used Australian’s Own multi-purpose cream in the tetra pak (found in the aisle where the UHT milk is) and it was so creamy , no separation…. Great easy tasty recipe…

  97. Oh Pauline, you never cease to amaze! Four ingredients in this case chicken, sweet chilly Philadelphia cream cheese, cooking cream , spinach! How easy is that! Served with rice and broccoli, added extra sweet chilly sauce as we like ir spicy and caboom! One of the tastiest meals we have tasted! Thankyou so much!

  98. We’re empty nesters, and Hubby’s not really a slow cooker fan/eater, but after making this, received heaps of accolades !! Diced a cple of chkn breasts w the thighs, added sweet chilli cream cheese, which made heaps of leftovers for lunch. Will def be making again, so easy

  99. Hi
I really want to make this but due to the situation we are all experiencing at the moment I am having trouble sourcing cooking cream. Would it be ok to use normal cream but put it in at the end. Thanks

  100. YUM! I was a bit unsure at the end of the cook time because my regular cream had split but I brought that back with a cornflour syrup. Had a taste and it was a bit bland – I used a chives cream cheese and it mustn’t have had much flavour. So I thought about what I had and added sweet chilli sauce to it until it tasted good. Added the spinach and had as is. My chicken completely shredded up. Think next time I’ll make more so I can have the leftovers in a toastie. Pretty good and can’t wait to try other alternatives ?

  101. A Rule Breaker
OMG, this is amazing!!. My husband broke his pet hate rule and spoke with his mouth full. It translated to …This is really really good.
    10/10. Thank You

  102. This is my new favourite dish! Its sooooo good. We are going to try the sweet chilli version next. I found it very rich so we served it with mash and a garden salad. I felt like I was eating a meal up the tavern! So good!

  103. Where can I find the French onion cheese please, at Woolworths and I can’t find it and did coles yesterday.

  104. I used Sweet Chilli cream cheese (Philadelphia Brand–Sweet Chilli Philly). Unfortunately, sweet chilli, cheese and cream was not to my taste. I couldn’t eat it as it tasted too weird–almost like a strange tomato soup with processed creamy cheese, and it had a really gluggy cheesy/creamy flavour. I used sweet chilli a substitution as I couldn’t find French Onion cream cheese. If I make this again, I may try to make my own Onion Soup Mix as the commercial brands have Flavour Enhancer. But I think it was cheesy/creamy overload.

  105. I made this for the first time and OMG it is absolutely delicious. My husband went back for seconds. Will definitely be making it again

  106. This meal was amazing! I served it with steamed asparagus, baby broccoli, cabbage and green beans and it was perfect! Made enough for about three people. Could easily serve with pasta if you need to feed more. AMAZING!

  107. Rhona Mcgeachie

Made this for the first time last night it was delicious, loved it.
Served it with spaghetti tossed in butter with mixed herbs.

  108. I made this tonight for dinner very yummy. I did use 300ml of cooking cream and 140g of the cheese to make extra sauce then served it on pasta

  109. This is so easy and so good !! I also added some frozen stir fry veg half an hour before the end and served with cauliflower rice … delicious

  110. This was delicious!! Even my fussy hubby enjoyed it. Served with creamy mash and green beans. I only used 1/2 a pack of french onion soup as the first time I made it with a whole packet, it was too salty for us. This is definitely one we will add to our menu!!!!

  111. I made this tonight for the first time and even the fussy 3-year-old ate five pieces of chicken (doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a massive win because normally unless it’s presented as a nugget she won’t touch chicken!) 10-month-old also gave it a red hot go. I couldn’t find French onion cream cheese so used the spring onion and chive one, added bacon and sun-dried tomatoes. Yum!

  112. This is one of our favourites. We use Philadelphia cream cheese garden herb and onion , cream, chicken, spinach, mushrooms, onions and sometimes bok choy too. We love it

  113. Made the sweet chilli one. Philadelphia Cream Cheese and 3/4 cup sweet chilli sauce. It was to die for. Give it as many stars as possible YUM YUM YUM

  114. Winner winner chicken dinner. So easy! I used sweet chilli sauce and added mushrooms, yummo. This has very quickly become a regular dish in our household.

  115. Finally made this tonight and it did not disappoint–delicious! I added 3/4 cup of sweet chilli sauce, semi dried tomatoes and bacon.

  116. My favourite recipe! I use cream cheese and sweet chilli sauce as I find it’s nicer that way, add some bacon and I also have added corn, mushrooms and sun dried tomatoes before to change it up at times. I serve it with pasta and freeze extras for work lunch. Always a hit, easy and cheap!

  117. Done the sweet chilli version of this tonight
Added some cherry tomatoes as a added extra
    Was absolutely delicious v
    10/10

  118. I tried this tonight and it was so yummy. I used almost the whole 300ml cooking cream , and used the sweet chilli cream cheese as per suggestion. I added a dash of extra sweet chilli sauce and could have added more. I also added 170g bacon pieces and also sun dried tomatoes, served over rice. Will make this again and freeze the left overs!

  119. Made for the first time tonight using the sweet chilli cheese. Was so easy to make and extremely tasty. Will definitely make again ?

  120. I made this yesterday after I saw Pauline post it …. as I had all the ingredients needed at home. I made it with breast fillets however and added some finely sliced onion.
Easy, Quick, Delish …. all wins in my book!

  121. Oh I love this recipe! I do French Onion, use plain cream cheese and add half a packet of French Onion soup mix. It’s so good! My hubby dislikes cream cheese but gobbles this up every time

  122. Absolutely delicious! Have had this multiple times and had excellent feedback everytime. I’ve tried it with sundried tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon, all were great. I just use regular cream cheese and French onion soup mix. Served with penne pasta.

  123. I love this recipe have done it many times, my problem now is, my slow cooker died and now have an instant pot,, can I do it the same using the slow cook button. Thanks

  124. Made the sweet chilli version for the first time tonight. It was mild enough for the kids to devour but as I like some extra bite I added extra chilli sauce to mine. Very yummy. Will definitely make this one again.

  125. This recipe is fantastic, so easy to make and full of flavour. I have also recently tried the spring onion variation while it was still good it didn’t have as strong flavour as the French onion. My kiddies both still devoured the spring onion one.

  126. Totally tasty!! I made this tonight even after getting home a bit late. Super easy and super tasty. I used a block of cream cheese and half a packet of French Onion soup powder. Would add more soup powder as we love the flavour. I also didn’t have cream but I believe it didn’t make a difference to the dish. I added broccoli and capsicum also. My children do not like creamy dishes but ate it without complaint. My partner and I however loved it. I served it with spiral pasta and steamed carrot, beans and cauliflower.

  127. Pammie's Kitchen

Second time I have made this using the Sweet Chilli Cream Cheese, first time with the cooking cream.
Then decided to try it with a tin of coconut cream instead of the cooking cream and was just as tasty……………will do this method again .
Thank you for this simple and tasty recipe Paulene.

  128. This one is divine ??
Tonight I cooked as per directions, then I decided to replace the spinach for mushrooms! ??
For a twist. I then decided to use the mixture to make individual pies!
Absolutely a winner and absolutely delicious!
Served with potato gems and emojis!
    FABULOUS! ?

  129. Made this last week. Amazing! Couldn’t find French onion cream cheese so I did cream cheese with half a packet of French onion soup mix. Added a heap of sundried tomatoes and it was seriously gourmet.

  130. Had this tonight. Absolutely amazingly delicious and also worked out to be just below 4g of carbs per 100g, so perfect for my diabetic foster child.

  131. Made this for the first time. Added sun dried tomatoes ? and cooked little pasta stars ?? to serve with it. The family loved it ? served with garlic bread.

  132. Chris Cherry ? everyone calls me Nanna which I love ??..l

Have made both recipes love both, have to say sweet chilli is our favourite, I did freeze both for another time and both were as beautiful as if just cooked, heated on low on stove top stirring every couple of minutes. Just love this dish.?

  133. I have to say what a great recipe this is. I did the sweet chilli version served with rice and it went down a treat. Pity I didn’t triple the recipe for the kids to take it for school lunches….will remember next time.

  134. I made this tonight after seeing a post on Facebook about the sweet chilli version. Used about 700gm chicken thighs and brought the Philadelphia sweet chilli cream cheese. Followed recipe but added about 1/2 cup of sweet chilli sauce and some dried garlic, black pepper. With 15 mins to go I then added broccoli and green beans plus the spinach. Served with Jasmine rice. Was absolutely amazing!!! This will definately be a regular. The flavour was superb!

  135. This is delicious!!!
I cooked mushrooms with garlic and copious amount of butter. I drained them and put them back in the pot, then took a ladel of the sauce from the slow cooker and put that in the pan with the mushrooms, I set it aside and I added it at the end with the spinach. Added garlic too. Delicious! Def one to make, the sweet chilli variation would be amazing with prawns too! I also added an extra half a cup of sweet chilli sauce.

  136. Absolutely beautiful husband doesn’t like creamy dishes but loves this I always cook from raw using thigh fillets and add extra sweet chilli sauce to taste best recipe ever

  137. There’s a reason why this recipe is so recommended and shared, and that’s because it IS f!@#ing amazing! That is all!
I couldn’t find french onion cream cheese or soup mix so I kept my cream cheese plain but seasoned well with pepper and some salt. I swapped the spinach for sundried tomato because that sounded awesome in the alternate version. I also added fried onion and mushroom to mine for a WINNER of a dish!

  138. Definitely going to cook this one again.
Used approx 900g of tenderloins, 40g packet of French Onion soup mix (Woolworths homebrand) , 250g tub of Woolworths lite spreadable cream cheese and 300ml of the Bulla cooking cream. My cooker is big (at least 6L) and cooks quickly with the small amount of ingredients. It was cooked on low for 1hr 15mins.

I can understand why this is one of the groups favourite recipes.

  139. Sarah Vriesen

This was amazing it was a hit with the whole family, I had to double the receipe to feed my family of 4. I only doubled the chicken and used the whole cheese block. They have already requested it again next week, but this time they want me to use diced beef

  140. Wow, this is as good as everybody says it is and more. I made a double batch of the French onion chicken but added alittle garlic aswell as mushrooms and was such a hit I am now cooking the sweet chilli flavour today for the freezer. Highly recommend for a tasty yet very quick and easy meal to make.

  141. Susanne Jones

OMG, made this for the first time, wish i had done it earlier, it was soooooooo delicious & low carb, will be a regular from now on 🙂

  142. Brilliant! It even fits into the baby 1.5 litre slow cooker. I used 1/2 block of lactose free Philadelphia cream cheese and 1/2 packet of home brand french onion soup mix, plus lactose free cooking cream (added the 300ml container). Served it on a bed of brown rice. Next time I will add some sliced onion.

  143. I have made this a couple of times and we love it. So much flavour and so quick and easy to make. We are doing the keto thing and served it on cauliflower rice which didn’t disappoint and is a perfect meal for us. It’s feeding 3 adults, so I’m thinking next time I’ll double the ingredients so we get a little bit more because it’s one of them meals you have to keep eating and then there’ll be some for lunch the following day lol

  144. Made the Sweet Chilli version, used 1kg bone in thigh cutlets, and mushrooms, (cooked 3 hours low in 3.5lt SC) then added spinach the last 10 minutes, served with mash, broccolini and warm crusty rolls to mop up the scrumptious sauce!
Absolutely delicious and glowing reviews from dinner partner ?

  145. Made this tonight a definite winner in my house though I will lessen the amount of sweet chilli sauce as it was a bit to overspiced for me I also added the french onion soup lovely flavours.

  146. I highly recommend this recipe. I followed the altered version of combining sweet chilli sauce and plain cream cheese and it was wonderful. Hubby even went back for seconds. I will definitely make this recipe again.

  147. What’s the effect of not being able to use the tea towel trick as don’t want to leave it unattended while at kids sport?

  148. I make the sweet chilli version but add bacon and spring onion. Then I refrigerate over night. Next day I roll out pizza dough. Brush good amount ranch dressing on dough top with chicken mix and grated cheese. Close dough over and brush outside dough with a wash and add a little sea salt and bake do good damn amazing lol

  149. I see why this recipe has outstanding reviews it was delicious ? miss 7 claims it’s the best dish she has ever had haha. I used half of French onion soup mix with the cream cheese and cooking cream. Also added mushroom and onion.. we all loved it!

Ok we’re a tricky family with all different dietary requirements, arrrgh. This recipe adapts well and suited everyone. The low carbers loved it as did the diabetic. For the dairy intolerant we swapped out regular cream cheese for zero lactose Philadelphia cream cheese and used cashew nut cream. We used the sachet of onion soup as there’s no flavoured lactose free Philly in nz. For me who is everythingallergic, I made mine the same as everyone else but with Massells chicken stock and some Italian herbs. This made it more low fodmap. My tummy’s a bit sore so next time I’ll omit the cashew cream in case that was my problem. Verdict by everyone, outstanding, orgasmic and scrumptious.

I used whole chicken pieces & doubled the cooking time. Perfect. Served with pasta it was scrumptious. Easy & so tasty, will definitely cook again.

  153. Made this today, added cherry tomatoes cut into 1/4, sliced mushrooms and about a tablespoon of sweet chilli sauce. It was amazing! Served it with mashed potatoes! Bug hit!

  154. 5 stars
I made this exactly as is except grabbed Lactose-free cream cheese. It was delicious with rice. It tasted even better the next day.

  155. 5 stars
This is so easy to make, and seriously delicious! (and I don’t even really like cream cheese!).
I used the Woolworths Select Spring Onion & Chive Cream Cheese, and cooked in my 1.5 Ltr slowcooker. Give it a go. You’ll be pleased you did!

  156. 5 stars
    So easy & quick!
Huge hit in our house, everyone loved it.
I loved the fact it had minimal prep but tastes incredible.
    I served it with pasta

This is a firm favourite meal. I invited my next door neighbour for dinner, in her words, “full of flavour . She would love to learn to cook in a slow cooker. I may have converted her to slowcooking ???

  158. 5 stars
Another lady posted her version serving it with bow tie pasta, I did exactly the same recipe but I added sun dried tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic, olives & apricots ( I needed to use them up ) I used the Aldi cup of soup sachets. This dish is just wow, rich but delicious ?
I found the apricots a lovely addition but they were too sweet so it was a lovely experiment but a once only & the olives were perfect.

  159. 5 stars
This is one of my all time favourites- so savoury. I’m lactose intolerant so I swap out the cooking cream for Greek yogurt and it works a treat.

    Hi Paulene

I’ve had this recipe saved forever and am finally going to try it but I’m confused by the cooking time. It only mentions the last 15 minutes on high, so is the other hour on low? I’m guessing so… but I fear undercooked and overcooked chicken so. I thought I’d ask the queen!!
