  1. Delicious. Was done quicker than expected as my slow cooker runs hot so only took 6.5 hours on low. I added some peas and corn and made into small pies in the piemaker. My fiance and 14 month old loved it

  2. Isobel Macfarlane

Made this to feed 30 people and everyone said it was delicious used 3kg of beef .it also froze well took out night before needed then put back in sc for 1hrs 30mins on high and was so tender

  3. So yummy and so easy. I added mushrooms as well and I think kidney would also work if you like it. Better than any restaurant pie

  4. Yum yum yum!!! My family absolutely loved it!! Definitely a big hit in my house 🙂 will be making again.

  5. This is delicious and easy to make!!! Some times I change soup for cream of mushroom,
Also change things up with 1/2 mince half chuck steak.
I never brown my meat just chuck it all in.

  6. This pie was AMAZING!!! Huge hit, great flavour, easy to make, delicious. Definately a repeat for winter meals. Yummo

  7. 20/10!!!! Absolutely delicious. Needed to thicken with a little cornflour but other than that it was spectacular!!! Will most certainly be making again…..and again……and again…..and again.

  8. I’m not a fan of cream of anything tinned soup. I love a good ho,Meade pie, a slow cooked homemade pie even better. Could you suggest an alternative to this ingredient? Or would it just not be the same? Thanks.

  9. Karen Stuckings

Wow this was so good. I used gravy beef and added chopped shortcut bacon 1/2 way through browning the meat. Before putting top on pie I also added some grated cheese. Will be making again

  10. This pie was a big hit in our house I added diced bacon and also added grated cheese after cooking but before cooking in oven

  11. I’ve made this twice now and we all loved it! Even my fussy 4 year old son who eats noting. Will definitely be a regular in our house.

  12. Absolutely delicious and super easy! I was nervous about not blind baking the pastry base first but it turned out just fine. I substituted the onion for leek (hubby can’t eat onion) and wow what a great addition. This will be a regular on our weekly dinner menu ??

  13. Yummmm the best home made pie filling ever I used cream of mushroom soup added sliced mushrooms used half beef steak half mince (was all I had and really wanted to try the pie recipie) and extra pepper whole family enjoyed it and will definatley be a regular in our household

  14. Made this tonite but used Mushroom soup and added cheese to topping before putting pastry top on. Was delicious!

  15. Loved it. I added a tablespoon of sriracha sauce and 2 big handfuls of mozzarella. I think next time I’ll go shortcrust just for the base and blind bake

  16. Best beef pie filling I’ve made. Tender meat on thick and tasty sauce. Thanks I will be cooking this over and over again, my hubby and kids loved it.

  17. I made this last week. Put the slow cooker on, went to work. Home, ingredients into pastry, 30 minutes, dinner cooked. My 19 and 21 year old sons who do NOT like the same food both loved it. I have marked the page in my cook book with a 10/10. Try it, you won’t regret it.

  18. Jess Barentsen

Wow! So delicious and easy. Will be a regular in our house ?
Only thing I’d do differently is blind bake the base first, was a little doughy.

  19. A regular in our house and works really well as a dump bag (I coat meat in flour but don’t seal, and add soup on day of cooking, not to bag). I use mushroom soup and add mushrooms. Thanks for a fantastic recipe!

  20. Looking forward to making this. Is the can of soup a condensed can or a normal diluted one? Many thanks

  21. In response of the lady who asked – I use a condensed can of soup. It is most definitely not too thick, it’s perfect.

Best pie recipe, I add mushrooms and spinach. Sometimes peas, zucchini and carrots.

It’s popular with my partner and our toddler.

  22. Delicious, I didn’t do the pastry, I put mashed potato & sprinkled cheese on top & put it in the oven for 20 minutes. Yummo It will be added to recipe collection, 10/10

  23. I’m trying to make this recipe within the next few days. My only worry is that because I’m only cooking for myself, am I able to put the left over filling in the fridge and just heat up on the days that I want to do the pie again ??

  24. This looks amazing and i plan to make it this week – i do have a question, do you put the steak mixture into the pie hot straight out of the slow cooker or let it cool a bit first? thanks 🙂

  25. Too salty for me, next time I’ll cut back on the gravy and thicken with cornflour. The meet was lovely and tender and I added mushroom which was nice. Might try more veg next time,

  26. Delicious! I coated the meat in flour but didn’t brown and it still turned out great. Will add some mushrooms next time to try a different flavour.

  27. karissa paterson

am i the only one that finds the pastry isnt even close to being cooked after 20 minutes? hour later it was delicious

  28. As good as a bakery pie. I didn’t brown the meat, just threw all into the slow cooker and then into puff pastry that night, mine may have had 9 hrs but made no difference. Meat was just perfect. Made enough for 5 for dinner and lunch for 2 the next day (not in the pie, just leftover filling). Another great recipe to convert the family to slow cooking!

  29. Absolute winner in my house, my 3 year old loves it! I added a handful of button mushrooms the second time and yummy!!

  30. Hi Ladies, the pie was delicious unfortunately the bottom was not cooked through, still very doughy. What have I done wrong ?

  31. Absolutely loved it i did it in pressure cooker instead much quicker when u get home from work. I also added peas carrot and corn to mine. Probably the best pie ive had in years. Family loved it and a great way to get the kids enjoying their vegies. Next time going to try with potato on top. YUMMY ?

  32. Going to try this tonight. Puff or flaky pastry on base of a pie will usually remain soggy due to the extra butter in it so going to use short crust on base instead and puff on top.

  33. This was just amazing. I made the filling the day before and made pie the next night as i got home too late. My partner love it. Partner wants to have it with rice next ?

  34. Lovely filling! Used it to make lots of little pies in pie maker.
I tried shortcrust pastry on the bottom but it was too sweet

  35. Wendy Bartonek

This pie is the best. My hubby reckons they are better than the ones bought from the best bakeries. I make the pies using the pie tins bought from Kmart $3 for 4 and serve with mashed potato and veggies.

  36. This pie is the most amazeballs pie I have ever eaten, sometimes I also add bacon before I put in the oven I fry off diced bacon and I also sometimes add mashed potato to put on top of mixture then the pastry on top before I put in oven 🙂 just overall an awesome recipe ????

  37. A solid favourite in our house! We add a punnet of mushrooms, sliced, to it as well. I often do the filling one day, fridge it, then make pies with it the next day – awesome flavour! I have also cooked it with 1/2 a kilo of mince added to the steak – adds a beautiful depth to it – YUM!!

  38. Made this on the weekend. I used the filling as a casserole and added carrots, corn and peas.
It is absolutely delicious. Thoroughly recommend this recipe it is really, reallly good

  39. Delicious. Perfect pie for a cold winters night. Family scored it 8/10 saying it would’ve got 10/10 if it had been less salty so may reduce the gravy granules and use cornflour to thicken next time.

  40. This pie filling is better than any store bought pie I’ve had!
After reading some of the other reviews, I increased the oven cooking time to 30 mins to make sure the pastry was cooked through.
Will definitely be making this again 🙂

  41. Easy to prepare and yummy to eat. Will leave out the stock cube next time. Just a bit too salty.

  42. Beautiful recipe although little bit too salty but will cut back on Gravox maybe ? added kidney which my husband loves. Did need to cook pastry a little longer but overall lovely dish

  43. Stefanie Moore

We had this the other my hubby said it was better than any store bought pie and said we could make money from selling them ? I used short crust pastry on the bottom and added mushrooms the recipe made 10 individual pies and had enough left over to make one big pie lovely recipe thanks

  44. OMG!!! added kidney to this and cannot believe how rich and creamy … this is definitely my new way of cooking diced steak for casseroles etc

  45. This recipe is fabulous! My family love it. I sometimes put the mixture into taco boats, top with cheese and mashed potato to make a cottage pies. They are awesome!

  46. Amazing. Better than bought pies. Whole family loved it. Needs a 10 star rating. Definitely be making it again

  47. Amazing! I decided to top with mash and it was delicious, proper comfort food. I also mis-read the recipe and thought it said 1 and a half teaspoons of pepper but me and my husband loved the spice so I will make it again like this. Thanks for this recipe.

  48. I have made this several times and LOVE it! This is one of my ‘dump bags’ so easy to do and ready whenever I need it.

  49. Larissa Wakeley

Oh my, i have made this so many times, I’ve used different meats, beef, chicken, lamb, different soups, mushroom, chicken, veg, but kept to the basic principles, its the most loved pie, and ALL my guests have gone back for seconds. mmmm, mmmmm

  50. I made this yesterday. Tasted amazing. Kids devoured it. I doubled the recipe as there are 7 of us. It had a bit too much liquid for a pie. I simply scooped out the meat and will have the rest with mash tonight.

  51. OH YEAH! ?
Cooked filling night before and made into a family pie for dinner tonight. I used rump steak as that’s what I had. I’m thinking the 20mins in the oven must be for individual pies, as mine took at least 60mins to brown up. Will do individual pies next time, maybe in pie maker. I warmed the meat filling before adding to pastry. Give it a try and I hope you love it as much as we did ?

  52. Karen Monaghan

Best steak pie recipe ever, there’s always one of us that don’t like something but we all love it. I also add chunks of sausage in with the meat and they all ask for leftovers for lunch, you won’t be disappointed ??????????

  53. Karen Monaghan

Best pie ever, all 5 of us love it and look for more, I add chunks of sausage in mine, delish ??????????

  54. Amazing and very tasty. . I ‘sneak in’ some veggies too. All my family young and old love this pie filling

  55. It’s honestly the best!! Don’t change anything! I’m not a fan of chicken condensed soup, but you wouldn’t even know! Trust me!! Honestly the best recipe ever!!

  56. Wow what an amazing pie ??, I followed the recipe but added a bit of water during cooking as I thought it was a bit dry and I added more cracked black pepper as we like pepper , hubby asked for a 3rd one which means they were good, got his stamp of approval ?,
Will definitely be making these again ??

  57. This recipe is a 10/10!! I am not the best cook in the world and this was easy as… Tastes amazing as well! One of, if not, the best pie recipe there is… Do yourself a favor and make it, you won’t be disappointed.

  58. Absolutely delish!
We skipped the browning stage (though still floured it) and I doubled the pepper
It was amazing in pies and also in pies with cheese on top too
The hardest part was not eating it straight from the cooking bowl it was that good and it smelled amazing all day 🙂
Thanks for a great recipe thoroughly enjoyed by my family x

  59. This is absolutely gorgeous. Everything goes so well together, was dubious about the soup part but you don’t even know it’s there.
I had to add water halfway through. Please make this!!

  60. Yum although I added cup of water with stock cube, didn’t matter, we added mixed veggies, grated cheese on top, and mashed spuds, just left it in the cooker. I did add cornflour and water mix to thicken a little.
    Yum ? 10/10

  61. Made this pie last night. It was very good and very easy. My husband and I decided the consistency was a bit glutinous at the half way mark so I added about 1 cup hot water (so as not to bring the temperature down too much). This initially made the gravy a little runny but it thickened up again to a be a perfect pie gravy. I did brown the meat first. I used a shortcrust base which I blind baked as I prefer it and a puff pastry top. Baked at 200C for about 25 mins in my individual baking tins. Recipe yielded about 5 meaty pies in my rather large individual tins. Would definitely make this again but would add more cracked pepper (double?) and maybe more onion.

  62. Made this pie filling with so many variations depending on who I’m feeding at the time or what’s in the cupboard I’ve made it with cream of mushroom soup I’ve made steak and kidney, mushroom ,bacon and cheese sometimes mince sometimes chunky steak best pies ever

  63. Family fave here! We add chilli flakes, bacon and mushrooms with some added pepper to ours. We often use tortilla wraps as the base in our pie tins and puff pastry on top or mashed potato on top with some cheese. Yumm!

  64. I made this last night. I used 1 pack of 500g casserole beef pieces and 1 pack of 500g mince as I was on a bit of a budget. Got home from the shops to realise I had no chicken soup left so I just used a can of mushroom soup.
I didn’t brown anything first just popped it into the slow cooker and sprinkled some flour on top. I had also put it on a little late in the day so I put it on for 3 hours on high and then 1.5 hours on low.
I used the Kmart big pie maker and it made 2 big pies.
The kids absolutely loved it! I think I would make double next time as I didn’t even get any they demolished it ha! I made it with the honey mustard potatoes which were also delicious. They asked for it again tonight ha!

  65. So yummy and such an easy recipe to do. This was my first time making a pie and it turned out great. I used a can of creamy chicken soup cause I read the receipe wrong! But it all worked.

  66. I use this recipe often. Always works out amazingly. We all love the flavour. I’ve made several different versions, added mushrooms, topped pies with cheese, added bacon.. so many variations.
I use a pie maker to make individual pies and double the recipe so we have plenty to freeze too.

  67. First Time Making and Probably one of the rare times I actually followed a recipe (well 95% followed the recipe). I was short on time so after tossing the diced rump in flour I put it straight in the slow cooker without browning off. Although I always cook of my onion and garlic when adding to any slow cooker recipe. It went on at 10am and was perfect by 7pm. We ate half the first night with veges as it was too hot to use in pie (I thought anyway). So the other will be a pie tonight and leftover mashed potato spread over the top of the meat before putting the pastry lid on. PS the flavour of this recipe is absolutely delicious and I will be making this over and over and over again. Perfect!

  68. OMG!!!!
Amazing, delicious, drool-worthy and fights over the last piece.
Will definitely make this one again. Will try a few different options as extras.

  69. Finally, a Meat Pie Recipe that delivers the old style Meat Pie flavour. It was delicious. I said was because none was left.
Thank you Shaya for a wonderful, simple Recipe. 5 Stars

  70. Love love love this recipe. This time I added 250 grams of diced bacon when searing the onion. When assembling the pies I added cheese on top of the pie mixture. Delicious .

  71. Tammy Shorten

This pie mix is amazing, better than beefy pies. It’s the best mix I have ever tasted and always use this one now. I doubled the mixture and made heaps of single pies to freeze to always have some on hand. You won’t be disappointed.

  72. Loved this recipe 10/10

    I changed slightly
I did 500g mince with 500g steak. I also only had chicken and corn soup so used that and it was still delicious. My fussy 4 yr old who doesn’t usually eat much meat ate his whole piece. Great recipe

  73. This is a really nice recipe. I made a smaller pie, so we had the leftovers on toast. Everyone loved it.

  74. It was the best beef pie I have ever made. My whole family loved it. I didn’t have crime of chicken soup, but chicken and mushroom.

  75. Gwen Williams

Loved this recipe – I felt like a chef even though it was very easy to do! I made individual pies which worked well and I had some meat and sauce left so made a couple more but put mashed potato/pumpkin on top before I put the pastry on top of that

  76. I am wanting to make this recipe but don’t have any tinned soup can anybody suggest what I may be able to use instead?

  77. OMG made Chunky Steak Pie tonight and it was a big hit. My hubby is not a huge pie eater but he thoroughly enjoyed it. I cooked it for an hour it was perfect.

  78. Absolutely love this recipe, I add bacon and make little pies in my pie maker with cheese hands down the best pic recipe EVER!
    Thank you

  79. This sounds delicious, i am making tonight. I was just wondering if I am using all mine instead of steak (don’t have any steak) will it be the same cooking time. And should I still coat with flour and brown in pan? Thank you ?

  80. sheena-lee Brook

We do this recipe each week especially with winter about and kid’s love it too which is a plus. I also add in some chopped up chorizo and sliced up button mushrooms into the mix. No need to cook em just throw into the slow cooker and let it do it’s magic ?

  81. Belinda Rodoreda

Best pie I have ever made!!

Absolutely delicious. I added diced up bacon and also sprinkled grated cheese ontop before placing in the oven. My pie needed 1 hour in the oven for the pastry to crisp up. Next time I’ll add some mushrooms. Will definitely be making this again.

  82. Angela Shepherd

Have made this pie on many occasions, everytime its a complete WINNER.. empty plates all round. The flavour is that of, if not better than a delicious chunky steak and cheese pie you’d buy at a “good bakery” 10/10 without fail 🙂

  83. Made this pie on the weekend. First time making pies. Lets just say it was a hit and I will definitely be making it again. Might try adding bacon next time. ?

  84. Delicious. My Slow cooker is new and not a really SLOW cooker so it only took 6 hours for me on low. I added cooked Potato & Peas at the end.
Had some for dinner & will make my pies tomorrow. Thanks Shaya.

  85. Great pie recipe. Made this to the recipe but deglazed the pan with 1/2 cup of red wine. And used the filling for pies in pie maker. Also cooked for about 6 hrs.

  86. Made this yummy recipe but instead of a pastry topping I did a mashed potato topping with grated cheese underneath. Did serve it with puff pastry squares as well to keep daughter happy too.

  87. I love this recipe, but instead of a pie I had carrot, potato peas and corn etc and serve as a hot pot! Both my fussy kids LOVE it

  88. This sounds amazing! Can anyone give some guidance on how to add kidney to make this a steak and kidney pie? In some comments it has been done. Any ideas on volumes and how to prepare?

  89. Delicious!! Best pie filling ever. Tastes like from a bakery. I added some grated cheese later in cooking, as per some suggestions. Will become a family staple!

  90. Made this recipe using mutton. It is so tasty, will be using this all the time…my husband loves gravy and will be having the left overs on toast with an egg on top – Happy Dance 🙂

  91. What sort of baking dish do you use.!!Can it be a tin for baking cake!! How do you enclose it like a pie!! Do you put the meat mix on hot because won’t that ruin the pastry!! Thanks

  92. Okay Y’all…I made the Chunky Steak Pie tonight for dinner AND I’ve been told if it’s not a regular on the 2 weekly schedule im being kicked out ??
Winner winner all around even for fussy MR 4.
If you haven’t made it GET ON IT! Delicious.

  93. I have made this god knows how many times and it still hasn’t lasted long enough to make into a pie. Our granddaughters love it ladled into a yorkshire pudding with homemade chips to dip.

  94. Best pie ever!! I used pepper gravy instead of gravox, lactose free sour cream instead of the soup and cooked the bottom pastry for 15mins before filling with meat then topped with pastry. Held its shape when cut and the meat was melt in your mouth!! Absolutely a firm family favourite at my house!

  95. Wow! Beautiful pie recipe, a lot nicer than a bought pie! We decided to turn ours into single press. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

  96. This is ALWAYS a winner in my home! ?? My girls , 25 & 27, always make sure that they will be home for dinner when they see this in our weekly menu! The flavours in this pie are fabulous with mash and roast veggies. The filling is also fabulous on toast ??

  97. This is the best pie filling I’ve ever made! I also like to add vegetables to it and serve it as a casserole!

  98. Made this for the first time the other night and got thumbs up across the board which rarely happens. Great recipe, will definitely make again, recipe needs no tweaks perfect the way it is

  99. Used this recipe the other day but I made 4 individual pies in my pie maker, it was absolutely delicious, will definitely make this again

  100. Awesome Pies <3 I got 9 full sized pies (1/2 cup filling in each pie) by just upping the meat to 1.5kg but left all other ingredients the same qty. In fact I brought a pie maker just to try this recipe lol and it didn't disappoint, only thing different I will do next time is use shortcrust pastry on the bottom just to see the difference. They were very tasty and somehow my husband managed to eat 2 of them but he is hibernating now haha

  101. This was super easy. Browned chuck steak with butter for extra flavour. Added 1 cup of liquid beef stock instead of the can of soup and dry beef stock cube. Absolutely perfect.

  102. This is a winner at our house with the whole family! Passed the recipe onto my mum who suggested replacing chuck steak with forequarter chops! Pulled out the bones, served up with mash and veges! Delicious ?

  103. Awesome recipe, made for the first time last weekend, got the thumbs up from everyone even my partner’s work maté’s as he had taken some to work for lunch, I made double quantity and then made into individual pies so that there was enough for the freezer, although not many actually made it to the freezer, with half of them I spooned some mashed potato on top of the meat before putting the pastry lids on, a definite hit all round, will certainly be making these again.

  104. This was okay. You could definitely taste that some part of it was made with processed ingredients–the can of soup. I think I’d prefer not to use a tin of processed soup, but make my own soup and use that. I wonder if any substitutions for gravox and the tin soup have worked?

  105. Hi quick question when browning steak can I use the sear mode on the slow cooker to do this instead of a pan?

  106. Delicious, am always hesitant to use canned soups but this has won me over.
10 out of 10 in this house hold.

  107. Fantastic, 10 out of 10. This was my first time making a meat pie and I will definitely be making this again. . The only thing I changed was that I used short crust pastry on the bottom .

  108. Yummy pie filling. It was my first attempt at doing a meat pie, this recipe made enough for 20 Kmart pie maker pies, so there are half in the freezer and and half handed out to family. Everyone is happy!… only change I made was to add a little red wine… because, why not?
There are lovely big chunks of meat in every bite with plenty of yummy gravy. I’m very happy, and now I have the confidence to start trying new varieties.

  109. Fantastic. Halved the gravy powder as first time cooking found it to be to salty
Made 8 individual pies this time used short crust for the bottom ( blind baked ) puff on top Three kids three adults all smashed them
    Definitely doing again
    Freeze really well

  110. This is probably not the first time I have reviewed this pie
Because it really is that good
I always make a double batch an freeze half for when I can not be bothered
I do reduce the gravy powder by half as found salty. But that also depends on the quality of gravy mix being used I find
    5/5

  111. 4 stars
Added a tablespoon of pepper sause as this was a bit too sweet for. Went down a treat, will make it again. Thank you.

  112. 5 stars
Hubby has been raving about dinner, so flavoursome and tasty. I used a combination of steak and mince meat and it was perfection. Highly recommend this recipe, the pie was superb.

  113. Angela Turner

    5 stars
I pre cook 500g of beef mince sometimes instead of the steak . Chuck all the ingredients in the slow cooker and leave for 8 hours in low. Flavour is amazing

  114. Jayne Dinwoodie

    5 stars
Wow what an amazing dinner, so simple to put together but so darn delicious , never made it before but sure will be doing it again absolutely delicious

  115. 5 stars
We had this tonight. It was a winner for my fussy husband, he came back for seconds and wants what left for lunch tomorrow. I added sneaky veg ? grated carrot and sweet potato , peas and corn. It was delicious ?

  116. 5 stars
OMG!! This was amazing! I added mushrooms to mine and only had pepper gravy powder so used that. We didn’t make it into a pie but served it over chips with mushy peas on the side! Everyone here cleaned their plates and fought over who got the leftovers for lunch the next day! This will definitely be a regular here! ?

  117. Elizabeth Menolotto

Top shelf kind of recipe. We often make this mixture but for budget purposes we subsitute the steak for mince – pork and veal is our favourite. Then use our Sunbeam pie maker. Perfect pies every time!

  118. Makes great chunky pies, full of flavor as well as a rich and thick gravy. Only thing I did different was I cut back by a tablespoon of Gravox. A recipe that doesn’t disappoint.

  119. 5 stars
The easiest and best tasting homemade pie.
    I added bacon and mushrooms.
10/10 from hubby and he is a hard man to please ????

  120. 5 stars
I’ll never buy a bakery pie again after making this recipe.
I’ve made it so many times but I’ve started adding a kg of mince and diced bacon, delicious. In a house of 7 fussy eaters it’s loved by all.

  121. 5 stars
We love this in our house. It is pretty versatile too! We have made it up as pies, served it over pasta, on hot chips and even just had it on toast. It is delicious every time! ??

  122. 5 stars
another amazing recipe. I love this one and have added mushrooms this time, then making it into little pies. so much flavour!!!!
