1-2-3 Roast Beef

Serving: 6
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 6 hours
Total Time 6 hours 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1kg or larger rolled rib roast beef
  • 1.5 tbsp of dry gravy powder of your choice (I used traditional)
  • 1/2 cup of hot water (optional)

Instructions

  • Place beef in slow cooker
  • Sprinkle gravy powder over roast
  • Pour hot water over roast
  • That’s it 🙂
  • Cook all day on low – 6-8hrs depending on the size of your roast.
  • *Inspired by Grace Macdonald who did this with a roast pork + roast pork gravy *
  • You could also lay vegetables around your roast or use our great “roast vegetables” method – just search that recipe by name to see it 🙂
  • Update: For many years now, I’ve no longer added the water to this recipe. Starting with the gravy dry is totally ok as it produces heaps of its own liquid during cooking 🙂

Tried this a couple of days ago. Easy 🙂 Substituted the water for 1 litre of beef stock, with extra gravy powder. The meat was yummo and the gravy was the best I’ve ever had!!

Mmmmm delicious. I added a black pepper salt thyme crust and wine mushroom and garlic which formed a wonderful gravy. I will be coking roast beef this way from now on.

  4. Used a 1.3kb topside roast, added some thyme, rock salt and cracked pepper and 500ml beef stock along with the water. Only required 6 hours on low and meat is just so tender. Mixed in Gravox supreme with the liquid and have made the most beautiful, rich gravy. Will never be doing a roast in an oven again, this recipe so easy and so tasty.

  5. Made this for dinner tonight. Delicious and so easy! Started with a 1.5 kg Bolar Blade roast, put a chopped onion, potatoes and carrots around the meat in slow cooker, seasoned well with ground salt and pepper, minced garlic clove and sprinkled 2 tablespoons traditional gravy powder over meat. Added the 1/2 cup hot water, a good splash of Worcestershire sauce, fresh bay leaves and sprigs of thyme. 8 hours on low and turned out perfectly! Thickened gravy a little before serving with a bit more gravy powder.

This was sooo easy it surprised me as it was my first time using S/C thought l was going to muck it up ,my daughter just loved it and was eating it before l even got it to the table ,will do it again for sure , the only thing was l might have put too much water as l though wasn’t enough so gravy came out abt too runny but my own fault, should have stuck to recipe , the aroma through the house was amazing !!

  7. Absolutely amazing recipe! We cooked two 1kg marinated peppered beef roasts with this method for 7 hours on low and everyone was truly impressed with the result…plates were licked clean thanks to the delectable gravy 🙂

  8. This was absolutely devine! Had it on all day while I was at work with my parents coming for dinner and arriving as I would walk in the door. Sliced up super tender and juicy, I added a extra tablespoon of gravy powder and let it thicken as I got the veg ready. Dad raved about it, left overs the next day became beef and gravy rolls which was also wonderful! Will never do a beef roast in the oven again

  9. We had a larger sized roast, so cooked on Low for 9 hours, and turned up to high for the last hour, sliced and let sit in the gravy. We also added quartered onions in the beginning and it came out Amazing! Melted in your mouth.

  10. Loved it. My family loved it. Wouldnt change anything with the recipe it was excellent. Will only be doing roasts like this now. ??

  11. I have had many failed attempts at roast beef… but I finally cracked it with this one! I used a bit more gravy so my meat was nearly covered (it was a flat chunk) and it turned out amazing. So good with Yorkshire Puds 🙂

  12. Magnificent, thank you Paulene. Ridiculously easy. So tasty
I had a small piece (less than 1 kg), pre marinated in Worcestershire and black pepper. I added a sprinkle of season all salt and a little extra water. 4.5 h on low and it was a winner in rolls. Some tried fresh, I tried an oven warmed roll, and it was so freaking good I had to try in a fresh roll too!! warmed rolls. Will definitely do this again as a roast meal too

  13. I did your 1,2,3 pulled beef (I used a blade roast) and OMG ? it was soooooo tender it just fell apart! Made gravy out of tge liquid with a splash of Worcestershire and thickened with gravy flour. Leftovers will go into little puff pastry triangles with some veggies for a super easy dinner tomorrow night!

  14. I had to come back and try this again. Magnificent, devine, so tasty, such a winner with the family in fresh buttered rolls…..and so easy it basically does all the work for you. 1.3 kg Blade bolar beef roast for 8 hours low in my new Breville Smart temp and it shredded so easily to go back into the devine gravy (needed a bit of extra gravy powder at end to thicken up). I know what I’m having for lunch l;eftovers today and cant wait.

  15. Absolutely love this recipe , was so delicious with beef brisket , the meat just fell apart and the gravy was delicious. Will deffinetly be making this a lot more as my family loved it.

  16. This recipe is outstanding. Tonight with pork, divine. I’ve also tried it with lamb with excellent results, and the family has requested I try it with chicken next time. So easy, so tasty, so versatile

  17. Mouthfuls of tender delishness ???
I used leg of pork this was enjoyed by ALL the fam including Master 10 thanks for the recipe !

  18. A variation on this is to sprinkle a packet of French onion soup mix over the beef as well as the gravy powder – delicious!

  19. Simplicity and taste guaranteed. We’ve now tried this with a mix of chicken breasts and skinless thighs, and the the votes are in – Chicken wins with 2 votes from four people, with the runners up being pork (1 vote) and my favorite…beef

  20. OMG this was soooo good! I added some sliced onion and garlic under the meat, and a splash of Worcestershire sauce. At the end I heated gravy on the stove top with some corn flour, seriously the best gravy I’ve ever had!

  21. did it again with beef , cooked to perfection even daughter liked the smell and she isnt thrilled with most kinds of meat , tomorrow i use the same recipe but with lamb

  22. Absolutely beautiful and the flavour was not over powering even got to freeze some for a later date. Best way to make a roast. ?

  23. Michelle Stasiakowski

I used a whole rump and sooo good. Put potatoes, onion and garlic cloves in with it. Got to give some out to family members and plenty of leftovers. Yum

  24. The best and tastiest dish I’ve made in my slow cooker! We had beef and gravy rolls. I used blade roast, seared then left for 8 hours! A new family favourite!

  25. This was really lovely. The meat just fell off the bone and the gravy was to die fore. Switched out the beef for a leg of lamb as that is what I had. Cant wait to try this again with beef. Thanks for the delicious and easy recipe.

  26. Chris Cherry ? everyone calls me Nanna which I love ??..l

This dish is amazingly tender with lots of gravy. I only had a packet of Maggi brown onion gravy so that’s it. Maiden voyage for my Choose a crock pot, did not disappoint. Hubby asked what’s for dinner told him Roast Beef ?. I don’t like Beef, then have a Vegemite sandwich, oh ok I’ll give it a go. Fatty that is awesome what’s in it. Beef,1/2 cup water and a packet of brown onion gravy. No way you have put something else in it. No I didn’t, ok can you cook it again soon ? XXOO. Thank you so much Paulene, you are awesome.?

  27. We made this the other week and it was delicious. Served it in rolls for an easy summer night dinner. We will definitely make it again.

  28. This is my roast beef go tor recipe as it’s so simple. I use the Coles slow cook family roast on low for 8 hours

  29. Absolutely delicious, reminded me of my dads pot roasts…. will definitely cook again. I added an extra 1/4 cup water as I had a very lean piece of beef and it was super tender..

  30. Cooked this recipe last night, I did sprinkle some mixed herbs and some garlic powder on it with the gravy powder just to add some flavour and it was tender and delicious. After an hour I added potatoes, pumpkin and carrots and they were delicious as well

  31. WOW! In all my many years of cooking Roasts (I’m 77) I have never cooked an easier Roast Beef, no browning,no sealing, no making gravy….(the gravy it makes is delicious) just sat a small rolled beef on cut up pumpkin pieces and voila 7 hours later yummmmm! Thankyou Paulene fir this wonderful recipe. Easiest Roast Dinner I have ever made! One for the caravan for sure.

  32. This is amazing. Tastes delicious and so quick and easy to cook. I tried it for the first time last night and it’s all gone .. eaten up by the kids., they devoured it. I will definitely be cooking this again. We had ours with mashed potatoes, the kids preference was bread roll… it’s … . Yum yum yum 10/10.

  33. I did this for my son’s 18th Birthday fed 50 people, 2 big slow cookers and 6kgs of beef! It was amazing not one spoonful left over. Everyone complimented it aswell. So good!

  34. Making this for the second time. Using blade roast as it was so good the first time. There was no need to change anything, the kids cleaned their plates in record time Thanks Pauline!

  35. 1-2-3 Roast Lamb ?
1.3kg boneless lamb shoulder in 3.5lt sc, (added 2 Tbsps mint jelly) added potatoes and pumpkin half way thru (8hr on low) crisped up lamb and veg for 10 minutes in the air fryer, absolute perfection! ??????????

  36. For anyone that has ever had doubts about a roast in the slow cooker try this one! You will never ever ever cook roast beef any other way! Put it in sprinkle gravy powder and water and walk away for 6+ hours. The most succulent, tasty roast meat you will ever cook. I am 77 and an experienced old fashioned cook. But I am converted, , so will you be!

  37. I made this tonight and OMG it’s amazing. I added an extra tbsp of Maggi gravy powder to the liquid once it was done cooking to thicken it up and add extra gravy magic. Definitely a keeper.

  38. We had this tonight but used pork, and. It was, delicious!! 7 year old daughter said it was amazing, went for thirds! Hubby said it was sensational. First time trying pulled ‘meat’ and it was a absolute winner ??

OMG!!! Made this roast beef today and will definitely make again….plates have been licked clean by 3 children (and me).
Tastes just as good as it smelt cooking away. Thank you Paulene Christie ?

  40. Well, even thou I got distracted helping my toddler open all his presents from everyone and the beef ended up on low for 10hours instead of 8….. It still came out tender and delicious and smelt amazing. There was none left over after everyone had some. Even the 2 fussy toddlers had some.

  41. Made the 123 Roast Beef… was kinda sceptical that a lump of beef and gravy powder would transform into something sooooo delicious. It was crazy good. I’m truly sorry I doubted ?

Added a tiny bit of water (just in case), but it wasn’t necessary and ended up having to thicken the cooking juices with a little more gravy powder. Maggi Rich is really something!

I finally got round to trying this dish. Both of us – and our friends loved it. Our friend who is the meat carver, was not really needed. He said it was so tender. They are going to try it in a few weeks. Served it with roast veg, but I will make a pile of mash potato next time to soak up the gravy – yum….

I made this tonight for the first time, and it was fabulous. I used 1.4 kg Brisket and cooked on low for 7.5 hours.
I added 1.5 tablespoons of traditional gravy powder, 2 bay leaves, 1/2 cup hot water and a dash of Worcestershire sauce to the meat. And then just left it in the slow cooker.
I rested the meat, by wrapping it in Apopped it in saucepan with lid ( to keep warm) for 15 minutes. I had to add a little cornflour in water to the gravy to thicken it up.
The Brisket was extremely tender, melt in your mouth and so very flavoursome. Served with roast veg and Horseradish- YUM !
It was hit with the whole family.
I will definitely be doing this again.

Had my first ever attempt at cooking a roast and this version looked like my skill level. What an amazing roast. We hoovered it hot and when we were slicing it up and then cold the next day. Didn’t add water and it was not dry at all. I feel like a cooking genius!
